Michael O'Neill described Switzerland's penalty against Northern Ireland as the worst penalty decision ever, and it got me thinking, what was the worst penalty decision ever in one of our games, either for or against us? GO...

May 2nd 1981. THAT match.

But not the penalty awarded to Walsall.

The one awarded to us was the worst decision ever by a referee. Not because it was never a penalty (although in truth it probably wasn't), but because by awarding it the referee gave us that cruel glimpse of salvation only for it to be thrown away by our unerring ability to snatch agonising disaster from the jaws of certain safety.

That penalty award made our defeat and subsequent relegation much more difficult to take.

Stevie G, is the one which comes instantly to mind.

Although you could interpret Simmonsen to have made the worst penalty decision - in trying to put the ball into outer space.

Didn’t the panel on Match of the Day after watching the video replays say it was a penalty because there was an “intention to foul”.

Don’t know the exact rules but I’ve heard it said before that there doesn’t need to be actual contact if it’s agreed that there was an intent to foul and the player has lost the advantage trying to avoid the incoming foul.

As I said I don’t know the exact rules or whether they’ve changed but 90% of the media thought it was a penalty so can’t be that controversial.

Simon Tracey and Paddy Kenny have both got away with absolute nailed on spot kicks not given.

Tracey absolutely clattered Giggs in the 1st Premier League match with the ball about 3 metres away, sent him spinning into the air like a roadkilled deer, not given.

Kenny in that mad match v Hull that almost guaranteed promotion (Unsworth last minute winner) grabbed a Hull striker round the ankles and pulled him to the ground on the box as well. To be honest rather than any decisions that have gone against us, they were the 2 most blatant penalties not given that I recall.

Yes that was the excuse given to try and save the referee from looking stupid. Can you find an example, either before or since, of a penalty being awarded for intent?

October '78.
Away at Stoke.
Corner to the home team. Garth Crookes throws himself to the ground, untouched, as the ball comes over. Penalty.
Go on to lose 2-1, having had a perfectly good goal by Anderson chalked off that would have given us a well deserved point.
End season getting relegated.
Referee Ken Walmsley of Blackpool. Detested the twats (Crookes and ref) ever since.

I'd like to say the Kevin McNally decision to knock us out of the cup at Aldershot but it was so foggy and we were at the other end I didn't actually see it!

You sometimes find that penalties or given or not given in contest to the games, basically the refs show their “human” side.

So if a team is having chance after chance and totally dominating the game you can bet the ref will give them a 50/50 penalty whereas down the opposite end the ref won’t give a pen even when it’s quite clear.

Take last Saturday, Hull were lucky to be leading 1-0 at half time. We had some under so much pressure if the ref has given the pen for the O’Connell accidental handball it would have been a total injustice to be listing 0-2.

Everyone seems to agree taking away the penalty Switzerland were the better team and deserved to win.

The worst decision involving a penalty for me, was when we allowed Steve Simonson to step up at Wembley, and take one of the worst penalties ive ever witnessed!!!

I'd blame the several outfield players for that one, personally :)

The Scougall and Gerrard ones are the most fresh in my memory. I also remember Gillespie getting pole-axed away at Reading in the promotion season too.

Also many refs seem to implement a totting up system and don’t referee in isolation to the incident.

For example:
If we have a penalty shout where there’s a 30 to 40% chance of being a penalty, it’s correctly refused.

Then a few minutes later we have another possible penalty shout which is correctly refused. The crowd go mad but neither should have been penalties. If we immediately attack again, nearly score then have another penalty shout.

Most refs crumble and would give a weak penalty decision because in the context of events during the match that teams deserves a goal.

Do recall something like that. I was sat bang in line with it and for me it was a dive rather than invasive action.

Kozzy’s fabulous save against Citeh...

Stevie G’s penalty against us at Anfield... at a corner, he dived into Kozzy’s arms. Ref was dying to give a penalty

Did he give that for the Gerrard dive or Crouch's kick to the head?

Have you ever seen a penalty for "intention to foul" given since - anywhere?

One where I wasn't actually there so didn't mean as much as some.
Didn't Kozluk head the ball back to the keeper at Upton Park but the ref ruled he'd handballed it? Remember the replays from behind the goal, absolute shocker.
Don’t remember that. Do remember Kozzy having a last minute goal disallowed at Upton Park for absolutely fuck all though. Outrageous decision

I vaguely remember one in our last relegation season when the forward headed the ball away from goal and it bounced onto the top of Ryan Flynn’s shoulder who was also facing the wrong way. I knew we were going down after that.

Amazing how many football fans don't know the basic laws of the game.

A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:

  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
  • strikes or attempts to strike (including head-butt)
  • tackles or challenges
  • trips or attempts to trip

John fashanu's hand ball in '91. He hand balled it twice. First one given the second one not given.

I'm sure to this day he was trying to fix the match. He got away with match fixing a couple of years later although that match wasn't mentioned.

Fashanu is a full weight all round. Disowning your brother just because of his sexual preference and then not apologising even after he killed himself?

Wanker.
