Worst goals tally ever - can we do it?

Been staring down the barrel for our own worst points and goals records for ages. They're both a shoe in now.

We'll avoid all the PL worst records.

Most defeats is 29 games held jointly by Derby, Sunderland and Ipswich. We've already lost 24 with 8 games to go. On current form, we'll beat that!

Wow, NEW TACTICS WHERE WE ACTUALLY ATTACK! For years I was under the misconception that attacking was part of the game of football, but now I find it is a NEW tactic & one we should incorporate into our game. It is becoming obvious why we are in the position we are in.

Attack what a good idea!
Well it is a new tactic for us. Have you watched us this season?

We really are historically shite.

I'm glad we had that little run to get past Derby because I think we'll beat every other record we can. Can't see us winning another game to be honest.

Maybe if we get the manager in before the end of the season, we might get a late season bounce but it's probably unlikely.

It's all rather disheartening.
I'm not going to suggest that McBurnie has played well this season, but I would be interested to see a graphic of where on the pitch he's touching the ball compared to last season. I rarely see him getting the ball in the box or anywhere near it for that matter. It's usually 40 to 50 yards out with his back to goal winning a header that is never picked up by any of his team mates.

There are 8 games left, and whilst we have avoided Derby like levels of incompetence in terms of points there is still work to be done on another front, namely to avoid being the lowest scoring side of all time in English league football.

We currently have 17 goals, of course. 10 at home and 7 away. The record lows we could yet beat, or equal, are as follows:

Fewest goals in a season: 18 by Loughborough Town, division 2, 1899-1900 (34 game season)
Fewest goals in a PL season: 20 by Derby County, 2007-8
Fewest home goals in a season: 10 by Man City, 2006-7 and by Huddersfield, 2018-19
Fewest away goals in a PL season: 7 by Norwich in 2019-20
Fewest goals in a season by a Sheffield United side: 32 in 2006-7

We have already beaten the all time fewest goals away record - Loughborough only managed 6.

We have had 2 other seasons when we scored less that a goal a game aside from 2006-7. These were 1990-91 (36 in 38 games) and 1975-6 (33 in 42 games).

It is clear that barring a miracle this team will set a club record for goalscoring incompetence. As for the other records, my guess is that we will score at least once more, but there is a chance we could break Derby's record.

Finally, a look at our goalscorers this season and last:

McGoldrick 6 (last season 2)
Sharp 3 (3)
Bogle 2 (n/a)
Burke 1 (n/a)
Berge 1(1)
Osborn 1(0)
McBurnie 1 (6)
Bryan 1 (n/a)
own goals 1 (3)

Mousset 0(6)
Fleck 0(5)
Lundstram 0(5)
Baldock 0(2)
Stevens 0(2)
Egan 0(2)
Norwood 0(1)
Robinson n/a (1)

With a few exceptions, this is pathetic. The idea that we will score enough goals to finish in the top 6 next season seems deluded in the extreme at the moment.

well Norwich went down with 21 points scoring very few goals 26 but could be champions in 2 weeks

well your basing us being poor on a poor prem season this time out

like norwich have found out attacking championship defences is a different ball game
they only scored 0.6 per game in the prem
but find scoring in the championship a tad easier

I think we have a much worse squad than Norwich did when they went down.

on what basis
weve lost most of our games by the odd goal
their gd was far worse minus 49
they have benifitted from having little injuries again this season
I cant see how the team players that that got us to 2nd 24 months ago when fit will struggle

weve been up against the best defences in europe
next season we play against much more swiss cheese defenders

The difference is their manager had the balls to stick with it instead of resigning, we are in a complete mess, mid table at best next season.

We're all on about our poor scoring but just remember you could be a Man City fan, having to put up with them scoring 5 once a fortnight (how boring):eek:. I'm sure all of us on here have never known it so bad for goals am I right in thinking our midfield has contributed none this season.

Ah so without Wilder. Oconnell becomes absolute crap . Basham dreadful Egan becomes a tosspot .....
Interesting

There is a very good chance they won't perform as well. You may not be old enough to remember but when we appointed Robson after warnock there was a major drop off in the performance levels of our players.

remember Keith Kettleborough having hair

not a very good reference as its hard to follow slurred instructions cosh he wazz pished

Indeed. Come on the next prem giants!

The best English goalscorer this century is 35
There is no guarantee Brewster or McBurnie will improve. McBurnie has definitely regressed.
Norwood's legs look like they have gone
If Bogle scores more than 5 I will be amazed.

I agree, a lot hinges on a new manager and new players.
Hey mr positive you need a night in penny black with yours truly I’d make you smile

We haven’t we’ve had worst injury season ever, if Berge Egan O’Connell Basham baldock Steven’s had been available more we would have been much better. Our team is no worst than Norwich’s it’s if we can hold on to em.

Back to scoreless form then...

Rhian takes the record: 22 appearances as a forward, no goals. Didzy came off this list last season. Can Rhian do it? Doubt it.

I still stand by the idea that anyone who thinks this team will get enough goals to go up next season is deluded. These players are broken.

3 goals in 7 games needed to prevent this bunch being remembered as all time worst scorers.

I’m just glad we overtook the Derby points record, whilst very embarrassing indeed the stats in this thread aren’t talked about anywhere near enough, thankfully!

So where are we:
Least pts: Derby 11 - avoided (we have 14)
Least home points: Sunderland 7 - avoided (we have 10)
Least away point: Derby 3 - avoided (we have 4)
Least home wins: Sunderland 1 - avoided (we have 3)
Least away wins: Several clubs 0 - avoided (we have 1)
Most defeats in season: 3 clubs 29 - we have 25.....7 games to avoid 4 or more defeats (gulp)
Most home defeats in season: Sunderland 14 - we have 12 with 3 to play
Most away defeats in season: Burnley 17 - we have 13 with 4 to play
Fewest goals scored: Derby 20 - we have 17 with 7 to play
Most goals conceded: Derby 89 - we have 55 with 7 to play (would need to ship another 34)
Fewest goals scored at home: Man City 10 - we have 9.....
Fewest goals scored away: Norwich 7 - we've equalled it
Most goals conceded at home: Derby and Wolves 43 - we have 25
Most goals conceded away: Wigan 55 - we have 30.

So still records could tumble for us.....

Depending on Brighton's result tonight and Newcastle on Saturday - United could be relegated this weekend, which would equal the earliest PL relegation record with six games still to play @SufcLive

Love this. I have posted a thread on most losses of all time by total and %. We have a real chance of the latter and as you say should get the most in Premier League history but also should get the most in top flight history too!

(Bold = Should beat record

Italic = May struggle to beat record)

The 9 main records left, yes it might seem I'm being optimistic with the 6 but fucking surely?
