Will Grigg

unsurprising for me because last 2 days of the window, everyone knew sunderland were desperate for striker after they made it quite clear by being interested in every striker that moved. & wigan took full advantage because sunderland were hardly going to walk away they had 5 bids rejected & were still going. but 4m for grigg in L1. we thought brayford for 1.5m was bad. that is the definition of running in supermarket on xmas eve & pay £30 for packet of stuffing

1.5m is the figure being bandied around last night

From March 2018, but still highly relevant.

Regardless of whether they go down this season, Sunderland will get £25m (this) season and £20m for the following (2019-20) campaign – riches beyond the wildest dreams of their potential opponents in English football’s generally impoverished third tier.

How parachute payments are completely distorting life below the Premier League

A protectionist cartel, designed only to keep the 'established elite' at the top.

They're not running away with it though. Few games in hand but still wouldn't be top if they won them all. Wonder how a playoff finish would go down in Sunderland, not well I'd imagine.

Thankfully, 'splashing the cash' in football isn't (yet) a guarantee of success. But it don't half help.

That's another reason why CW is doing such an outstanding job. Crap managers such as Carvalhal, Bruce, whoever is in charge at Forest/Sunderland this week, glamour boys like Lampard who are parachuted into a good job etc. Having plenty of money masks their deficiencies. Chris is 'up against it' in almost every match but has - over almost three seasons - done an outstanding job.

It's designed to try and help those outsiders who break into the Premier League succeed, is it not? It's far from perfect, but it's necessitated by the fact that there's so much money at the top of the game. If it didn't exist, the gap in quality in the Premier League would be even bigger. And the 'established elite' would get an even easier ride at the very top.

We'd get to use the Freed From Desire chant, so that's a plus.

That song was first coined for Luke Freeman, funnily enough, but obviously we never had occasion to use it.

I said this other day among the Grabban talk, equally viable as a 4th choice etc
He struggled to get game time at Rotherham.

Scored 2 in 19 in League One.

Not sure how he makes the bench for us.

Surely you're having Brewster, N'Diaye, Sharp, McBurnie and Jebbo ahead of him. They all have better records in recent times at equal or higher level. Though he has played limited minutes, what we've seen so far of Osula, I'd think he could also add more to the mix.

Or did you mean something else? Apologies in advance if I misunderstood.

But the current order due to injuries…
Brewster (doubtful 90 mins)
N’Diaya
Jebbo
Osula
Sharp
McBambie

I’m guess here but can see Sharp and McBambie are going to be out rest of year if not season. Can see potential for a rolling or 12 month deal for the right striker (Gayle or Grabban neither of which I would want) being signed.

I find it incredible that for this season McBurnie appears to have retained the number 9 shirt!

It's because the shape of the 9 has become embedded in the treatment table. Any other number may make it uncomfortable on his back, leading to a strain, leading to another prolonged period of absence.

Made me think of Will Haye in the b/w film Convict 99

Don’t think we’ve seen anywhere suggested that Sharp or McBurnie misses the entire season.

I worry about our fans. The Top Two out of three threads on here at this moment are Will Grigg and Joe Lolley.

They are no way near the level we should be looking at.

They also both totally go against the mantra Hecky was brought in on.

If he’s got a coin toss between a Will Grigg or Grabban and an Osula or Jebbison then he’s going the latter. Grabban just missed plenty through injury too, as did Grigg. We don’t need this route.

They are being given a run together but odds are they won’t start as a pair.

We’ll hopefully look at players who look like missing the PL final 25. Not passed it players who finished the season injured in the Championship or guys who could even get a game at Forest. We absolutely bossed their midfield in the second leg and he couldn’t even get in it.

Hence I said “I’m guessing here”. Just a worry about McB general flimsiness (booze or eating disorders I’ve suggested before could be and issue). He does not look like he’s got an ounce of fat in his body and Sharp is age slows recovery, trust me on this one.

No need to worry about fans, the injury worry just spawned the debate about potential throw away short term options. Grabban, Grigg and Gayle all being in that category.

Or do you think we should be discussing Sterling or Jesus?
