Wilder Updates, Ahead of Millwall

So you're happy to slag Wilder off for allowing him to play against us but not praise him for generating circa £700k on a player no one rated highly?

Previously, I have, in a way. Even started a thread. But it's a separate point.

Or is a 'criticism' not allowed to be posted unless balanced out by (irrelevant) praise?

He's a Championship player - he will have some qualities at that level, but given he couldn't get in our side when he was here, is he someone we really need to fear? If one of the agreements of the deal was that he plays against us and we get £1.4m for him, which may/may not go towards paying for Norwood then I can't really see where we've gone wrong here. Should we never sell anyone to any Championship team?

We should never allow our loanees to play against us.

We might have come out of the summer well with Norwood. Leonard might not be the greatest player and biggest danger to us. But neither are the point. We've allowed Millwall to be stronger for this game, when on deadline day they were desperate for Leonard and we weren't (or shouldn't have been) desperate to sell.

Hopefully as he’s absolutely just still a loanee and we shouldn’t be treating this as a permanent deal yet, Leonard will have given Wilder a call this week with helpful insights as to how we can beat Millwall tomorrow.

If Brighton were in this league, and Norwood couldn't play against them, there wouldn't be a peep from any of us.

Reassuring that our fans so unanimously believe Leonard can't possibly do us any harm tomorrow.

Even if he scores, he'd have to run the length of the pitch, meg Egan, flick it up into the air, and scorpion kick it past Henderson for me to give a shit that he was allowed to play.

If he gets on the end of a cross or something, so what, there's as much chance someone else would be there.

United need to concentrate on turning up, not ex-player hoodoo.

unlike last season we need to turn up
who they play is irrelevant if we put on a display like last season
thought it was our worst considering the team we played

If we are at it cant see them coming close the way theyve performed this season

Some easy money to be made on the coupon tomorrow and some easy 'loanee bites hand that used to feed him' copy for the sports journos to churn out.

You're right - we weren't desperate to sell, but we got Norwood and Johnson, so Wilder wasn't really bothered about keeping Leonard as an almost permanent sub, so he sold at a decent price and got a surplus wage off the salary bill.
If you think Leonard is better than Saville, then Millwall might be stronger - but it doesn't seem as if many Blades fans think that.
Otherwise it would be interesting to hear the EFL's response to trying to get a loan-permanent player bbanned from playing against the side that have actually discarded him ;)
(And I am naturally going to bet on him to score against us :()

SO.........................

Leonard plays a through ball for, yes, Lee fucking Gregory, who scores.

Laughable.

But Wilder still turns out to have called it right in the end.
Hilarious.

They scored twice. One from a pass from a player who the club could have prevented playing.

That's not a right call, that's the players bailing the club out.

Happily it's academic now.

Agree 100%, there was never any doubt at all. Everything Wilder and the club do is spot on and everything is absolutely wonderful.
Course not, he's human just like the rest of us, but he does know what he's doing with the managerial lark.
Do you honestly think he doesn't always do his best for this Club?

And we scored 3 times, not to "bail the club out" but to win a game of football which is what they try to do every week with whatever team the manager selects.
Describing a team playing a good game of football as 'bailing the club out' is rubbish.
Scoring a fluky equaliser against the run of play maybe classed as 'bailing the club out, but not today.

Seems like you and Ricky are a bit pissed off with today's win as it didn't go the way you wanted with Leonard playing?

I am delighted with the win and performance.

It is possible to support United and want them to win every game whilst at the same time not be happy with every decision made by the board or management or every performance the players give. I have never understood why this is so hard to grasp.

No surprise Ben Brereton wasn’t allowed to play for Blackburn against Forest yesterday. We must be the only club to allow this type of thing. Still got Lee Evans to come back next month then...

On this particular point your concerns were based on the decision to let him play was only made last week. As that doesn't seem to be the case reading the rules, I thought you had accepted the decision?

Is he buy now pay next year or an actual loan?

You have to remember Ricky genuinely believed at one point that his knowledge of the game and United in particular, would assist new United managers - the professionals - with their assessment of the players. He's wound his neck in a bit since then but it's easy to see he'd rather be right - or thinking he's right, see "spineless" - during the game than be concerned we're losing.

Despite the result, are you still trying to pretend you were right?

Hindsight's always right...

For me to be wrong I'd need confirmation that Millwall would've refused to pay near £1.4m if he wasn't allowed to play in this ONE game.

He got a good assist and we grabbed a win in the 90th minute. So it worked out fine, but the way some on here are going on and on and fucking on about it you'd think Leonard had a stinker and contributed massively to our win. That wasn't the case.

The Ben Brereton case is one I'm sure will sail well beneath the radar of the Ideal Blades.

Jay McEveley. Captain. Enough said. I'll chuck in "unseen work" as well.

I was annoyed we were losing, and the circumstances exacerbated that. Simple. You probably think I was disappointed with the late winner as well don't you?

We're seeing all the Ideal Blades pipe up after the result. Predictably. Yet I suppose I'm not allowed to do the same when something happens that vindicates anything I said... nah, of course not - because I was on the 'negative' side of the fence!

Some on here are going on and on and fucking on as though he was their best player and everything went through him though. All I can remember of him is a good pass and getting fouled a few times.

Show me one post where anybody said anything of the sort.

The whole point was that he's technically still on loan, and they'd be weaker without him in the side.

Fuck me, we're going to be arguing about this into next year aren't we?

If you keep responding every time someone disagrees with the tone of your posts - probably :)

To use an often heard phrase, the club is bigger than any one individual.

Leonard has potential, he may in time develop into a good player. At which level remains to be seen, but no doubt he'll have a good career. The question we have to ask is - which side won yesterday? Did Leonard prevent any of those chances? Where was this 'missed opportunity of a player' when Millwall needed him?

At this moment in time, Wilder has decided to risk losing one player in return for strengthening the team. Isn't that part of the managerial equation? To decide who stays and who leaves? Based on yesterday's result it seems the manager made a belting decision.

That would make more sense if it was about Lee Evans, but it's about Leonard. Two very different cases. Evans' departure prompted the arrival of Norwood. Leonard's departure was just an extra bit of business for a player who wanted to leave. We didn't need to sell him to bring in Johnson and Washington.

The fact that he's mentioned by name constantly says it all, we played an offside trap for some reason and fudged it and left a massive hole for a pass which a Millwall player put the ball into, and another Millwall player scored it. Which Millwall players doesn't matter, Leonard isn't a maestro, it was a good pass, but long balls through are Millwall's bread and butter aren't they? Sure whoever else would have played was equally able.

Personally I'd put it down to mind games from Wilder, a club mentality of letting people get on with their careers once they've left never to return, and the fact that whatever damage he could do to us would be off the field as much as on it, tactically etc, unless we made him sign an NDA.

And yeah you're going to be arguing for a while if you want the club to send you a copy of Leonard's contract so you can check the terms haha

What makes sense is that not a single Blade can read the manager's thoughts, and his reasons for moving someone on, plus any unwritten reasons that make a move a good one for the club, are the manager's and his alone. If the player was unhappy about his future, whether he'd be playing regularly any time soon etc etc, then only the manager and Leonard can answer that question. As for need, again, if the manager felt it was a good move then let his decision be judged on results such as yesterday.

Brereton isn't our player. Not Wilders decision. Are you really using hi to attempt to justify your rants? Straw clutching.

Please don't, it waSnt just those two things. It was in general. That you could assist them across the board. In a club role. Tragic.

You support United your way, by knocking the club everytime something doesn't suit you, including during a game , and I'll support them mine. ie having a moan about what has happened as opposed to what could have happened. Sometimes, it's not difficult to imagine you're unhappy with something like yesterday's comeback, following your dramatics earlier in the week. It's Ryan Leonard FFS.
