Wilder - Top Man again

Would be easier to discuss the game and our relatively poor re-start without the sound of knives sharpening in the background.

People queuing up to crown this as “the worst performance under Wilder”

I genuinely don’t get this need to go through the motions of hyperbole after a defeat. Venting manufactured frustration for the sake of it. When we are winning people are demanding our players are all in their respective international squads and discussing a regular champions league spot. We lose a couple and the same people are saying the squad needs culling, we’ve been “found out” and need to change the system players who’ve played 5 games or less are written off as shit.

Not quite as bad as Hull away 2018 but its not far off.

I think we are all aware Wilder will do something about it though unlike previous managers.

No point making excuses.

If we're not prepared to play hard and win our individual battles there's only one direction we're going.

Might take us a while to get going again - we've seen that in the past with slightly slow starts to the season under Wilder. Seems this break has not been ideal for us whereas it may have benefitted some teams that were struggling before to get the extra time to get their shit together. I'd expect a reaction from the players after this on wednesday though.

Even if we don't win another game this season the guy has done a phenomenal job since he came in and ranks as the best manager we've had in my lifetime above Bassett , Warnock Kendall and a mountain of dross

He will have us ready for next season and the challenge of establishing us as a premier league team

For me all this talk of Europe has been ridiculous considering our resources but we've had 3 months to ruminate on it and perhaps we've all got a bit big for out boots ,particularly the players

I obviously don't know him personally but he seems the type who'd want to be judges on his recent performances. Being critical of today's team, especially sticking with that front 2, doesn't invalidate what has been before. He's the best manager we've ever had. And he picked a team today that was very, very unlikely to create goal scoring chances. Both those statements can be true

Its refreshing to have a manager like wilder, he always leaves me thinking “he’ll sort it” and not been proven wrong yet. Let’s be realistic Adkins, Weir and Clough never even got close to positivity and honesty, where in our first season in the premier league and he’s put us in the conversation for Europe. Crazy to think some are using one game to throw cheap digs at a man who as totally transformed our club on a shoe string. UTB!

Wilder could do with sending Norwood to the opticians to see if he is colourblind though. The amount of times he passed directly to a black and white shirt was ridiculous.
Norwood was poor yesterday, by his own standards, and that was a big factor in the defeat because usually all good things flow from him. We depend on him a lot as the catalyst for most of our moves, he's the cement that binds our play together. Yesterday he looked like he needed badly re-pointing!

I still think we bought Berge as a natural alternative to Norwood - at least that's the role he appeared to play for Genk. But up to now Berge hasn't adapted to Premier League football and doesn't look capable of being our midfield playmaker. So, we might need to find an alternative in summer? I'm not writing Norwood or Berge off btw - I think Norwood is a great player and it's too early to tell with Berge. But when you depend on one player so much to create your play, like we do on Norwood, it's important to have a good alternative for days like yesterday when he was just way off the boil.

I always think a defeat is capable of erasing from memory some of the positives from the game. At half-time yesterday my son asked me what I thought of how we'd played. I said that we'd looked composed for the most part, had played better than we did at Villa the other night, didn't look under much threat from Newcastle, but also hadn't looked much of a threat ourselves, apart from the free kicks and corners. I thought Basham, Stevens and Baldock had all played well. I thought Fleck was really quiet and Norwood was unusually sloppy with his passing. But all in all, I felt that we were doing o.k. and was confident of a result.

Going down to 10 men was a blow, but even after that, I thought we were doing well to have most of the possession and were still taking the game to Newcastle despite being a man down. I commented on that during the second half.

Then comes the mistake from Stevens and after that the roof fell in!

It wasn't all Norwood's fault, but that was a big factor no doubt. The other thing that occurs to me is that we just don't seem fully match fit. We aren't playing with the usual high press and high tempo that has brought us so much success. Maybe the players are finding it hard to get the adrenaline going in empty stadia? But that's no excuse really. It's down to them now, if they really want to have a chance of playing in Europe next season they need to find some inspiration from somewhere and soon.

If we turn in another performance like that at Old Trafford next week they'll need to get the cricket scoreboard out - never mind Hawk-Eye! :(

There's not a lot he can do if a global pandemic disrupts the well oiled machine he has created

Can’t believe nobody’s blamed McCabe for this yet.

Yes I totally love his honesty and it’s refreshing to hear

However no one can argue that Billy & McB upfront doesn’t work, so from a team selection perspective that’s 2 bad days at the office in 5 days, good job he isn’t a heart surgeon or airline pilot innit

Spot on really and the miss from Billy was so un Billy like. Most would of put there next mortgage payment on him to bury that free header. Perhaps he got a bit excited and was already thinking of his celebration routine.
As for Stevens, well he had all the time in the world to control that ball with a bit of composure but for some reason only known to himself he chose to take a wild swing at it and completely missed. The rest is now history. Egan should of known better in the first half and ended up getting a stupid yellow card. I said at the time it would come back to bite him with the pace of the front two that Newcastle had.

I heard some of his post match & was impressed. You've got a good man there.
And look at the table. Even after 2 poor results, 7th place. That's bloody good, you know.
You've been made more than welcome on here & have even got some of us hating the spammer's a bit less.
But if you're going to come on here talking sense after one bad defeat for us....
You know the rules by now 🙂

Just heard a few of Chris's after match press comments. BBC/on here

Isn't it just so refreshing to admit we ballsed it up, it weren't good, the ref was a pre-Madonna booking two players for f all and going disjointed at the end and playing not as a team.

I don't ever remember hearing either Arsene, Jose or Surralex ever behaving with quite so much honesty.

We just have the best manager ever. C'mon Chris you can do it sunshine.

UTB

The ref reduced to being so old he pre-dates a 61 year old pop star in this post :)

Yeah that’s my point essentially. As supporters we don’t need to demand standards. We need to support the manager and the team.

It’s not Adkins banging on about unseen work, endeavour etc. Or even Warnock talking about what a great day out he’s had.

I think Wilder got the team wrong and there were some awful individual displays but no need to throw the baby out with the bath water. We’ve had one indifferent game and one bad game but this is the Premier League and every side we play has quality....even the ones like Newcastle and Villa that we apparently have the right to steamroller.

I don't think any sensible Blades think we have a "right" to steamroller anyone ....... we aren't programmed to be pig-like in our thinking

However, I do think that some of the players need to look at themselves in the mirror, after the last two games, and re-adjust their performances.

Yes, we were robbed by the officials at Villa, but we certainly didn't look ourselves and that was the opportunity for a "wake-up".

At Newcastle we looked shabby and the midfield in particular was very poor. Norwood looked frightened to pass the ball and misplaced more passes than in the entire season. I think he also failed to follow Jolinton in for their third goal. Billy's miss and Enda's howler were other examples of how we look way off the standards we've set ourselves this season. Berger hasn't adapted to the speed and urgency of the Premiership yet and Egan has definitely not looked his usual solid self.

Tufty has a big job on his hands for Wednesday night, that's for sure

I think its because the bar has been set unexpectedly high. Most of us expected a relegation battle.

It's the equivalent of the following. I go on holiday in a few weeks with no expectations, but meet a nice portuguese lass and spend 9 days being ridden like Desert Orchid.

But Newcastle was like finding out that she used to be a scaffolder called Bernard.
