Norwood was poor yesterday, by his own standards, and that was a big factor in the defeat because usually all good things flow from him. We depend on him a lot as the catalyst for most of our moves, he's the cement that binds our play together. Yesterday he looked like he needed badly re-pointing!
I still think we bought Berge as a natural alternative to Norwood - at least that's the role he appeared to play for Genk. But up to now Berge hasn't adapted to Premier League football and doesn't look capable of being our midfield playmaker. So, we might need to find an alternative in summer? I'm not writing Norwood or Berge off btw - I think Norwood is a great player and it's too early to tell with Berge. But when you depend on one player so much to create your play, like we do on Norwood, it's important to have a good alternative for days like yesterday when he was just way off the boil.
I always think a defeat is capable of erasing from memory some of the positives from the game. At half-time yesterday my son asked me what I thought of how we'd played. I said that we'd looked composed for the most part, had played better than we did at Villa the other night, didn't look under much threat from Newcastle, but also hadn't looked much of a threat ourselves, apart from the free kicks and corners. I thought Basham, Stevens and Baldock had all played well. I thought Fleck was really quiet and Norwood was unusually sloppy with his passing. But all in all, I felt that we were doing o.k. and was confident of a result.
Going down to 10 men was a blow, but even after that, I thought we were doing well to have most of the possession and were still taking the game to Newcastle despite being a man down. I commented on that during the second half.
Then comes the mistake from Stevens and after that the roof fell in!
It wasn't all Norwood's fault, but that was a big factor no doubt. The other thing that occurs to me is that we just don't seem fully match fit. We aren't playing with the usual high press and high tempo that has brought us so much success. Maybe the players are finding it hard to get the adrenaline going in empty stadia? But that's no excuse really. It's down to them now, if they really want to have a chance of playing in Europe next season they need to find some inspiration from somewhere and soon.
If we turn in another performance like that at Old Trafford next week they'll need to get the cricket scoreboard out - never mind Hawk-Eye!
