  • Move Wilder to head of football operations/DOF and make him responsible for appointing a successor

Quite a few people keep saying this and personally I couldn’t disagree more if I tried with this one.

When he goes it needs to be a big thank you for the memories and a clean break.

Amongst the responsibilities of a director of football are these (wording nicked from Google):

Strategy & Philosophy
• Defining a unified footballing identity from the academy to the first team.
• Providing long-term institutional stability regardless of managerial changes.

Player Recruitment
• Leading scouting networks, talent identification, and data analytics.
• Negotiating transfers, player contracts, and squad management in line with budgets.

Year on year we are losing our identity. We don’t seem to have a footballing philosophy or any long term plan.

We are struggling to implement tactical basics.

The less said about our recent recruitment the better.

The only way a director of football works is if someone comes in who has a really clear, good and effective vision for how the first team sets up. Then uses their analysis and scouting network to buy the players needed to fulfil the required roles on the pitch.

Main reasons why it shouldn’t be wilder:

We have no identity, philosophy or defined way of playing football

We seem to sign players from the list of culture carriers regardless of how they’ll fit into the team. Hamza I’m looking at you. Wilder has shown nothing to suggest this behaviour will change.

Moving wilder upstairs magnifies a lot of the current issues just because of historic success and bladieness.

Imagine a first team coach coming in and then wilder says here you go cock, I’ve just signed you this lot. They’ve all played for me before they’re good lads

As for him appointing his successor. That’s going to be someone out of his mould Isn’t it, an old school club manager and not a modern head coach.

I said previously that we need to stick with Wilder for now until we get people in the club capable of finding a better replacement. The owners and Bettis wouldn't know where to start. However after the last 3 games I am beginning to have doubts. Clearly he has been dealt a bad hand by our transfer activity but some of that is on him in terms of who we have brought in. Another defensive midfielder to play RB and BBD when we are crying out for some creativity and athleticism is hardly making the best use of the limited funds we have. He needs to set up the team to maximise what we have got and change tactics accordingly but unsure whether he is capable or willing to do this (needs a system with 3 central midfielders which probably means sacrificing a striker). If the performances continue (the results have been better than the performances but eventually your luck runs out and it catches up with you) then I am not sure how long we leave it before making a change. If we make Blackburn look like prime Real Madrid on Tuesday like we did with Cardiff and Bolton it will need to be sooner rather than later.

Wilder is sadly a sticking plaster the club needs until the structure, processes, setup whatever are changed.

There isn't anyone who will come in and essentially run the club like he does.

I’m not a believer of polls, anyone can make that crap up. We are 2.5k down on bums on seats this season, kids are bored, die hard supporters around us are bored, people are wanting money back at the ticket office, next season will be a lot more painful unless changes happen.
This is a very good observation, bad football and constant negativity eventually drains the life out of a club. People stop watching, stop spending money, kids don’t build the same connection and the whole atmosphere around the place dies. The club loses money and status.

You can call it “steadying the ship”, but if you’re steadily losing supporters, enthusiasm and belief in the process, what's the point!

I stopped watching for periods last season because it was depressing. Clearly I’m not the only one feeling increasingly disconnected. That should be a massive warning sign.

Norwich and Middlesbrough managed to replace managers very successfully last season, did they not? Two clubs who, like us, don’t have parachute payments but do have decent budgets for this league.

What is needed is for someone to commence the job of dismantling this well paid but godawful squad that currently looks like a combination of Frankenstein’s Monster and a Heath Robinson contraption that he knocked together when he was pissed.
Brilliant N J, Love it 👏

TBH I’m in exactly the same place as you and others but I’m trying to find a compromise that will stop the Wilder shaggers turning on whoever comes in like they did with Slav, Hecky and Selles.

On the ‘no decent manager would come to us’ point - disagree.

When you strip it back we’re on paper a mid table champ squad and probably upper mid table budget. That alone should mean we appeal to all up and coming managers at L1 and below, plus ambitious coaches and assistants in the PL and other top leagues, and the platform will be more attractive than many top European leagues, outside of the biggest clubs.

We’ve recently seen lots of rising European coaches come to our rival middling champ clubs for the chance at getting to the PL. imo that’s why the standard of coaching has increased markedly since wilder’s first spell.

Added to that, here you’d have the luxury of 1-2 seasons of pretty low expectations to build something (compared to Selles and Slav where it was promotion in year 1 at all costs). A lot of our players are loans or expiring deals so there’s a chance of a big rebuild in the summer.

If we wait a few months till we’re deep in a relegation battle - then maybe it’s a harder sell.

If we’re talking names, I’d be speaking to Damien Duff, assistant at Brentford, took a smaller Irish league club into Europe, worked at the fifa youth World Cup and for Ireland at international level. The Irish market has been a productive hunting ground for us for players in the past, so his knowledge there is a plus. He probably wants to manage Ireland at the 2028 euros, let him do that part time.

There isn't anyone who will come in and essentially run the club like he does.

We need someone to manage the team, sort out tactics, coaching etc. we don’t need a manager to “run the club” it’s not Tiger comic with Roy Race and Melchester Rovers. Let Bettis check the paper clip levels and the manager concentrate purely on the football, because that doesn’t seem to be the priority at the moment. More time is being spent thinking up excuses and fending off criticism.

go on the hunt for junior staff at Jamestown Analytics, BlueCo and CityGroup for employees looking for a more senior position and to make a name for themselves.

We could have done this on the relative cheap this close season, but Swansea beat us to the punch in licensing the Starlizard data

Sorry, but this and the whole “give me other names” take is simply ludicrous. How would we as a fan base have any steer on a list of names or their availability, to an extent to be in a position of offering the job?

If you have a shit member of staff at work, you fire them, then hire a replacement. You don’t go, well I assume there’s no one else able to do this job so let’s just stick as is and see if the decline somehow rights itself.

I had the same argument with a blade on the train en route to Derby away last season and it’s a poor excuse. This is what teams do, whether it works out or not is a different debate, but why would they continue with an option that is repeatedly proving to not be working.

CW is becoming so divisive, and making fans blind to the issues through his so called “pashun” and “getting the club”, but again like last season we’ve just been embarrassed by an average team at home, much like last season, and save the heroics of a loan player and keeper, would’ve been the same against Bolton, newly promoted, at home.

Yes, he’s had players sold, and some would argue the backing is minimal, but so what? Managers have these kind of situations all the time, that’s the point of being the manager. Need more staff? Sorry, we’ve no budget right now. Need certain tools? Sorry, our supplier is delayed.

Make do for now and work with what you’ve got.

Instead we’ve got a man at the heart of everything, getting nothing out of his players and dividing the fan base. The performances are shit, the attendances are dropping and we have a board backing him to deliver stability only ffs. All these pro-wilder points about his man management and budget squad building are a thing of the past, bouncing day for instance was 10 years ago now…

More results like yesterday and we’ll be in the shit quicker than you can say “he’s one of our own”.
great read

The most damning indictment i can give on the current situation is that I'm utterly bored with the team and management.

I've been going to matches since 81/82 and seen far worse teams. I've had a season ticket for over 40 years bar one.

Whilst health and wealth allows, that will continue and I'll still go to 6 to 12 away games a season.

However, i can't remember lacking this much enthusiasm about games even when times were worse.

It's about the day out and meeting up with friends more than the match itself.

There's probably a few factors in my feelings including my views on the predictability and the hole we've dug for ourselves.

For me though, we've just become a team that's hard to like or enjoy irrespective of what our realistic ceiling is.

Even under Adkins we had individuals I liked and respected.

It's a good point re supporting individual players. I wasn't very articulate in a previous post but even in the bad old days (talking 80s here) there were players you wanted to do well.

Last few seasons I don't care or identify, maybe a general malaise with football but god, majority of our players are ex Leeds, journeymen or shit. I like our development players but we seem intent on shifting them out.

Utd are my last reason to retain an interest in football but it's becoming tenuous.

I think you hit on a good point at the end for me too.

As much as football will always be my favourite sport and a passion, Ive found myself watching less on tv and getting bored quickly.

Its reached saturation point. The BBC even showed a pre-season friendly the other week.

I turned on Everton and Man Utd earlier, watched 5 minutes, got bored and came to sit in the garden.

Still a bit of a mystery that one? 🤔
Isn't it just?

It's gone all quiet but Knilly deserves not to be forgotten. He was at least 50% of our successes and we should be told what happened.

He clearly hasn't retired so what did happen, who made the decisions about it and why?

Begs the question - What else do we not know?

This board need to earn our trust. Right now, it's lacking and not just for that decision process either.

Nothing will change your mind?

What if the performances continue every week, like those we have seen this season so far?

We have seen no significant coaching, tactical awareness, in game changes, formation adjustments since last season, when Wilder said it would be different. The signings have been absolutely dreadful and wasted the few funds we had.

There are serious issues with the make up of the squad but a believe a competent manager could surely get more out of them? We would be better organised, more cohesive and not ran through every week. 60+ chances conceded in 3 games. That carries in, we are going down.

I think many are realising Wilder sadly is coming to the end. I thought he'd see this season out but now I am not sure. He is now talking about getting to the international break? What is going to change then? He has had all pre season.

As for 'unless anyone suggests anyone better.' Well there are thousands of top coaches round the world. Some we will have never heard of. Not all will be like Selles. Many Champ clubs (QPR, Swansea, Boro etc) find these coaches. We have to donthe same. Sadly many have a real fear of moving away from a Wilder/Hecky/Warnock local profile and due to Slav/Selles, feel forruners cant work here. Well, we may have been successful under those types but the game has moved on. Its about technique, pace, athleticism, power and good coaching. There is still a place for good characters and steady pros but as we have seen this week, if players are unfit/cant run, we will get steamrolled.

We need to look at a different approach. My only concern is our owners have shown no idea (no dof, no football people to help 'I'm only an accountant' Bettis (who seems to be untouchable- nice fella but presided over mistake after mistake in terms of recruitment, managerial changes, scouting structure) to make changes that will arrest things on and off the field.

Nothing will change the mind of Ndiayewillalwaysloveyou he's one of the happy clapper Wilder cult

I mean this is probably true, but only down to the fact he has signed an extension (which, I said at the time, even pro-Wilder fans must have thought to be madness). Replacing him would result in far more expenditure than needed. That said, it needs to be NOW that the board tells him that his sole remit is to get the best out of what he has, and in the remaining windows he has, the best out of what he is given in terms of reinforcements (which involves putting in a transfer plan which would likely be the polar opposite of what Wilder might actually want). If he doesn't like it, he knows how to resign.
Sorry, poorly worded by me (had a beer)

I do agree with the above posts and I get it. I was more of the thinking right now I don't think changing the manager is the biggest concern.

Weve played shit most of the season but as long as we pick up points then I'll take that for now.

Nail on head mate👍

When he said the players were tired that was me finally done. Come on then you Wilder worshippers. Explain that. Come on explain it. After 5 freaking games, professional players are tired. He's turning our club into a freaking care home. It's a disgrace. He needs to go today. There are managers out there who would do a far better job. Cooper and Dyche are just two examples. This club is dead on its feet. People on the Kop around me are completely disinterested. Some spend the whole match just chatting not even watching. THIS HAS TO FREAKING STOP! Chris if you're reading this, do the right thing and take your fitness staff with you. You have a legacy. Don't ruin it.
He did say the players looked "leggy" at Cardiff..so maybe 3 games..its pathetic.

100%

I turned on Everton and Man Utd earlier, watched 5 minutes, got bored and came to sit in the garden.
Similarly I watched til half time and then went to do a few odd jobs in the garden.
I find it increasingly difficult to relate to current day football.
Teams are bought and not built over a period of time.
In the 60s and 70s odd players were bought to improve a team and the nucleus of he teams were homegrown or home developed.
It's difficult to keep track of who plays for whom. A lot of the managers are impossible to understand. Many names unpronounceable and I don't even bother trying to remember names.
As has been said by others, I keep going partly through habit and partly for the social aspects - get to know people who sit around you in the stand at home games, bump into people you've got to know at away games, even though you don't even know their names.
I just live in hopes that things become a little more positive eventually

It really is a sad state of affairs when peoples main reason for going to the game is to meet up with old friends for a few beers before or after the game. If that is the level of entertainment on offer just spend the afternoon or evening in the boozer and save yourselves the heartache and the annual cost of a season ticket.

It's not a nice situation now

Wilder's been fucked over but he's also massively culpable, and he's left himself with nowhere to go with this joke of a squad

Now the clock is ticking again and it all feels so inevitable

I hope he lasts the season, but maybe not

If/when he does go we need to think seriously how to properly replace him, in all aspects. We need a presence at the club who will not let the sort of farce unfold that we had with Sellés last summer, where we were an aimless, rudderless clown show. We should aim to retain/recruit key staff who understand and care about the club - it would be a bonus if we could find one like that to be a DoF or similar. We need safeguards against the owners' ignorance and stupidity

Do you think the new signings are playing for free then?

Norwich and Middlesbrough unlike us, have a stable board. Ours have been a car crash. Sold our best 3 attacking players last season for £20m, and not given him a penny to replace them.

Nobody in their right mind would want to come here with the ownership as it is.
Like Cardiff and Swansea

I had doubts over Wilder during the 92 points season as, to me, it seemed we won games due to having better players than other teams rather than a great tactical approach. I did always say he was a good manager though with attributes that always meant his teams would be competitive.

I'm really not sure I believe that any more. We all know the main issues are in the board room and he's not been backed as he would have liked but I'm genuinely baffled by the squad building. He has had money to spend and we will be paying the likes of Choudhury, Rothwell, Riederweld, BBD and Kitching a decent wage. Of the 11 yesterday, Wilder brought in every player other than Tanganga who's he made captain. Despite the loss of the 3 key players, he can't say this isn't his squad. Only the O'Hare sale has blindsided him so I'm really not sure how we've ended up with such a unbalanced squad.

The fact we still look poorer as the game progresses, doesn't suggest anything has changed in terms of fitness either. This was supposed the big thing about this pre-season but we like exactly like last season. I have sympathy for the lack of options at his disposable but when you see clubs like Bolton and Cardiff outplay us with lower budgets and less valuable squads, it's not a good look for the manager.

Getting rid of him is pointless because the club isn't set up to let any manager succeed at the moment and I'd like to believe that he's still a good Championship manager who is a safe pair of hands but it's been a really concerning start. Hopefully something clicks soon because I actually think we're underachieving in terms of performance despite the sales. It was always going to be a tough season and the lack of attackers meant I wasn't expecting sparkling football but I'm really surprised at how much we're being dominated

Good points and well made

Other clubs do it as you say .

I’m not anti CW but the excuse of tired players yesterday really pissed me off .

I’m tired - I’m 65 , been working my nuts off since I was 16 ( as have many fellow Blades ) - if I’d have walked into see my boss saying I’m tired , or said same to my customers when I set up my own business , or said same to my wife and kids when things got tough - guess what would have happened .

Tell you , that’s nearing the bottom of the barrel for me .

Rant over

Back to bed because I’m -

FFS Chris - get a grip

Yeah, that quote genuinely surprised me.

First week of September, fifth league game, some players barely had minutes so far.

Bizarre and worrying in equal measure.

Spot on.

Some people seem to think were limited to Wilder’s black book of contacts to find a new manager from, the ‘go on then, give us some other names’ conversation usually bounces between Steve Cooper and Sean Dyche as if nobody else could ever be considered.

it was an oft touted idea that Wilder was ‘decent when we’re brassic but don’t give him money to spend’ - turns out that the limited funds we’ve had this season have been wasted on wages of underperforming, unfit mediocrity

Am I the only one who finds this approach of some to say, 'name a better alternative than Wilder' a bit odd?

To turn it on it's head, maybe those could explain why there is nobody better currently across the entire football world.

There are an absolute plethora of managers and coaches out there that none of us have even heard of, let alone know how good they are or could be.

I completely understand we could do worse and the lack of trust in the owners to appoint someone better. However, this attitude that's there's literally no'one better currently is nonsense.
