• Move Wilder to head of football operations/DOF and make him responsible for appointing a successor

Quite a few people keep saying this and personally I couldn’t disagree more if I tried with this one.

When he goes it needs to be a big thank you for the memories and a clean break.

Amongst the responsibilities of a director of football are these (wording nicked from Google):

Strategy & Philosophy
• Defining a unified footballing identity from the academy to the first team.
• Providing long-term institutional stability regardless of managerial changes.

Player Recruitment
• Leading scouting networks, talent identification, and data analytics.
• Negotiating transfers, player contracts, and squad management in line with budgets.



Year on year we are losing our identity. We don’t seem to have a footballing philosophy or any long term plan.

We are struggling to implement tactical basics.

The less said about our recent recruitment the better.

The only way a director of football works is if someone comes in who has a really clear, good and effective vision for how the first team sets up. Then uses their analysis and scouting network to buy the players needed to fulfil the required roles on the pitch.

Main reasons why it shouldn’t be wilder:

We have no identity, philosophy or defined way of playing football

We seem to sign players from the list of culture carriers regardless of how they’ll fit into the team. Hamza I’m looking at you. Wilder has shown nothing to suggest this behaviour will change.

Moving wilder upstairs magnifies a lot of the current issues just because of historic success and bladieness.

Imagine a first team coach coming in and then wilder says here you go cock, I’ve just signed you this lot. They’ve all played for me before they’re good lads

As for him appointing his successor. That’s going to be someone out of his mould Isn’t it, an old school club manager and not a modern head coach.

I said previously that we need to stick with Wilder for now until we get people in the club capable of finding a better replacement. The owners and Bettis wouldn't know where to start. However after the last 3 games I am beginning to have doubts. Clearly he has been dealt a bad hand by our transfer activity but some of that is on him in terms of who we have brought in. Another defensive midfielder to play RB and BBD when we are crying out for some creativity and athleticism is hardly making the best use of the limited funds we have. He needs to set up the team to maximise what we have got and change tactics accordingly but unsure whether he is capable or willing to do this (needs a system with 3 central midfielders which probably means sacrificing a striker). If the performances continue (the results have been better than the performances but eventually your luck runs out and it catches up with you) then I am not sure how long we leave it before making a change. If we make Blackburn look like prime Real Madrid on Tuesday like we did with Cardiff and Bolton it will need to be sooner rather than later.

Wilder is sadly a sticking plaster the club needs until the structure, processes, setup whatever are changed.

There isn't anyone who will come in and essentially run the club like he does.

I’m not a believer of polls,anyone can make that crap up. We are 2.5k down on bums on seats this season,kids are bored,die hard supporters around us are bored,people are wanting money back at the ticket office,next season will be a lot more painful unless changes happen.

This is a very good observation, bad football and constant negativity eventually drains the life out of a club. People stop watching, stop spending money, kids don’t build the same connection and the whole atmosphere around the place dies. The club loses money and status.

You can call it “steadying the ship”, but if you’re steadily losing supporters, enthusiasm and belief in the process, what's the point!

I stopped watching for periods last season because it was depressing. Clearly I’m not the only one feeling increasingly disconnected. That should be a massive warning sign.

I think that's where we are now.

Norwich and Middlesbrough managed to replace managers very successfully last season, did they not? Two clubs who, like us, don’t have parachute payments but do have decent budgets for this league.

What is needed is for someone to commence the job of dismantling this well paid but godawful squad that currently looks like a combination of Frankenstein’s Monster and a Heath Robinson contraption that he knocked together when he was pissed.

TBH I’m in exactly the same place as you and others but I’m trying to find a compromise that will stop the Wilder shaggers turning on whoever comes in like they did with Slav, Hecky and Selles.

On the ‘no decent manager would come to us’ point - disagree.

When you strip it back we’re on paper a mid table champ squad and probably upper mid table budget. That alone should mean we appeal to all up and coming managers at L1 and below, plus ambitious coaches and assistants in the PL and other top leagues, and the platform will be more attractive than many top European leagues, outside of the biggest clubs.

We’ve recently seen lots of rising European coaches come to our rival middling champ clubs for the chance at getting to the PL. imo that’s why the standard of coaching has increased markedly since wilder’s first spell.

Added to that, here you’d have the luxury of 1-2 seasons of pretty low expectations to build something (compared to Selles and Slav where it was promotion in year 1 at all costs). A lot of our players are loans or expiring deals so there’s a chance of a big rebuild in the summer.

If we wait a few months till we’re deep in a relegation battle - then maybe it’s a harder sell.

If we’re talking names, I’d be speaking to Damien Duff, assistant at Brentford, took a smaller Irish league club into Europe, worked at the fifa youth World Cup and for Ireland at international level. The Irish market has been a productive hunting ground for us for players in the past, so his knowledge there is a plus. He probably wants to manage Ireland at the 2028 euros, let him do that part time.

We need someone to manage the team, sort out tactics, coaching etc. we don’t need a manager to “run the club” it’s not Tiger comic with Roy Race and Melchester Rovers. Let Bettis check the paper clip levels and the manager concentrate purely on the football, because that doesn’t seem to be the priority at the moment. More time is being spent thinking up excuses and fending off criticism.
