Wilder and youth

Can't believe anybody is even questioning Wilder's actions with players like Whiteman and Reed. We have gone from League 1 to Prem in 3 years ........ no time to waste on developing players who 'might' make it. We, as a club, have made it! Now to stay there and consolidate. Sentiment goes out of the window.

I go with Wilder on youth, the level the players are going out to, and are being sold to says it all really, but I'd love him to chuck one in at the deep end this season.

I'd love say, Tyler Smith to be a revelation and bag a few.

First of all - let me clarify this isn’t a criticism of wilder. The results more than bare out that it’s worked out. That’s should go with out saying...

However, looking at the stats last season we didn’t give a single minute to a player under 23 that we own. That has to be a worry

Obviously the reason for some of the sales I.e Adams, DCL, Ramsdale, Brooks were forced on us either by the player or our league 1 position

However, Was it a mistake to let the likes of whiteman, Reed etc go so early on in their careers. Wouldn’t a loan have made more sense so that we wouldn’t be left with Lundstram as our only cover across midfield? These would certainly be in and around the squad now - and actually whiteman in particular has been doing well in league one.

Just feel we could use these numbers as there doesn’t really seem to be anyone else of note coming through to bolster the squad.

Don’t know what other people’s thoughts are?
See post 5.

When you win promotion, it is never something to worry about.

Wilder has sold the better lads to fund 2 promotions and the other lads have been left behind.

This is a very shortsighted short term view though isn’t it. Everything is ok because we won promotion.

A successful productive academy with opportunity in the first team would have very obvious long term benefits to the club.

I think you have ignored 1/2 my post.

Wilder has made the right decisions. As a premier league club we will attract good players to our academy. If they are good enough (think Brooks), they will get a game.

But to continue to attract players like Brooks you need a great academy with a proven pathway to the first team.

To be fair look around unless players are top top draw then they have to learn their trade just like the rest of us....take the England U17 team that won the World Cup other than the obvious Phil Foden, Gibbs-White and Hudson Odei how much have you heard of the rest? Take Regan Slater highly regarded by the coaching staff but still only 19 how many centre mids play week in week out at Championship/Premier league or even League 1. Not that many the ones playing regular either play fullback/wingback or up front where pace is the main requirement, I remember Steven Gerrard playing right back for Liverpool because he wasn’t deemed good enough for centre mid at that time....patience is the order if their good enough they’ll play and if not they’ll move on simple as

its strange one but the unfortunate thing is that very few clubs do so lets not go mad on wilder. its why spanish germans & dutch always in contention. the irony that considering England's history that national team would be screwed without Argentinean & Germans. i showed the vast experience difference between de ligt & foden both highly rated 19yr olds

also our best players were older but looking at the stats it was quite harsh. he played Henderson Woodburn Dowell all under 23. bought O'Connell at 22, baldock at 24. has played Regan slater stuck brooks into sheffield derby in his 3rd senior game

I'm sure Pinchy will be along soon to respond.

"Reed" is one of his trigger words.

im glad i wont see it, for 1st time put someone on ignore list after he tried to troll me, to best thing ive ever done on this forum. highly recommended. even better i wont see his reply if he tries to troll me again

Of course we give the academy lads a chance. Two will be key players next season, ok they may have a combined age of 70 come season start but they all count...

The younger lads will play if they’re good enough if they’re not they won’t.. if they show promise they will be sent out and if we let any leave permanently we will protect our future interests.

If there is any issue with producing young player the finger should be pointed at the relevant people and not Wilder. Not that I’m suggesting there is a problem.

We have produced a handful of “once in a generation” prospects.

Wilder played Henderson whenever possible. He gave a chance to Woodburn. He gave game time to Brooks. He played Dowell. Back in League One there was Chapman.

Doesn't seem like Wilder has any problem at all playing u23's when he thinks they're good enough.

There are a few posts on this thread leaning towards the view - if the young players are good enough, Wilder will pick them.
Can I just make the point - the objective of the Academy is to develop them so that they are good enough.

We've got the prem money for 2 years so I would love to see substantial investment in the long term future viability of a top class academy ..and some money injected into a foreign scouting network ..again for our long term benefit ...?Wilder has never really be an advocate of giving youth a main part in any team he's had..it's not his modus operandi....and now its massive games week in week out ..youth ain't getting a look in ...( for the next season and half anyway ) ...let him wheel and deal and keep us up for 2 seasons whilst some money is invested into the long term strategies needed of a top level club ..

I'm afraid I don't pay much attention to football outside my SUFC & England National Team bubble. I often see comments about the need for a foreign scouting network to bring young foreign lads into the Academy & develop them for the first team. I know many teams buy in foreign stars - fully formed for their first team. But, can someone give me examples of foreign players who have been brought into an English Academy when young & then developed into first team stars....

Cesc Fabregas was one.

Cesc Fabregas was one.
Fabregas was 16 when he left the Barcelona youth system. Best Foreign Scouting Network in the world isn't going to persuade a youngster in the Barcelona system to chuck the lot in for Shirecliffe. But, you did answer my question. Thanks. Any others? I'm just concerned that people think a foreign scouting network (even for 16 year olds) is gold dust. And I'm questioning whether it has worked elsewhere

The academy development is obviously for coal or U.K based talent ..in the main and the better the academy the better the young talent wants to come ..

As for a foreign scouting network ..it's obviously to look at potential signings form around the world who are ready or very nearly ready to play not to spot sixteen year kids from Barcelona

bonnet de douche oh, I see. So, the much requested foreign scouting network is for first team squad ready players, not development youngsters. Fair enough. As it happens, I have seen two SUFC Development XIs play this last weekend. French & German & Ireland born players in those & a young International who has featured for Belize (winking emoji....)
But, now is the time to drag out another of my personas. Before I joined the Carrier Bag Firm full time, in one of my jobs I was responsible for maintaining the algorithm under which foreign footballers were granted work permits. Occasionally, I was dragged out as an "expert" on the algorithm to bully Premier League clubs who were threatening legal action. Maybe SUFC could invest in a larger foreign scouting network after Brexit. Once we have a better idea of new work permit regs (particularly for EU Nationals not already settled in the UK). Investing before Brexit seem risky. Post Brexit, a Cesc Fabregas a-like youngster will need a work permit.

We're at Peak Off-season when posters are having to dig deep to think of reasons to criticise Wilder and others are even engaging in the discussion!!

It'll be Billy's Legs have gone and McCabe is holding the club back next...

Fuck me calm down you .dolls head ....

I said in the main ..(if your such a clever cunt you would have read It correctly ) for Uk based academy prospects ..obviously that still allows for youth prospects from other countries..

And , Mr Witty Trousers , why the fuck would we not look at potentially signing players first team ready from abroad as a Premier League club when the potential value for money is there ....or are you quite happy hoping to pick up scraps and bargains forever or pay the likes of £40 million for Mings and Targett ...

Sorry. Whatever it is that has upset you has been misinterpreted. I had misunderstood that people wanted a scouting network for (say) 13 year old foreign youngsters. You corrected me to explain you meant more fully formed near first team players & I understood that and said Fair Enough.
I'm not sure what else I've said that has upset you. I didn't mean that. Sorry

Salient point ..I never mentioned an academy for young foreign talent anyway...if anybody did they are in la la land ...not me and you skipper 👍👍

Oh dear....you haven't been on here long have you?

After we drew with Millwall at the Lane, some of the bedwetters on here wanted him to go. I kid you not.

If we lose say 4 games early this season, I can confidently predict that a brigade of our wanker fans will be on here saying "he's taken us as far as he can / he's out of his depth in the Premier League".

It's the Blades way.

Under FIFA regulations, no club can sign a minor from a different country unless their parents have emigrated. Minors are U18s unless it's within Europe in which case it's U16s. Breaching that regulation is what got Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea their transfer bans.

Yep that's the rules ....but

Is anybody actually saying we should try to bring in a boat load of Spanish whiz kids .? ..I think not !
