Winners get one as do the play-off winners but why not the team finishing second, who have done better than the play-off winners?. Never reight! I suppose we'll have to go on and win it then.

Don't see why those coming second should get anything. They haven't won anything.
I get your point but the OP wants to know why first and third get a trophy but not second. As has now been explained we get a smaller version of the winning trophy, and I certainly remember Morgan holding up a silver salver when we came second last time.Don't see why those coming second should get anything. It does always seem that finishing second is a Cinderella position. Our big sister gets all the attention by finishing first and the pushy smaller one gets attention when they finish sixth and manage to squeeze into a promotion position.

I have to say it would mean a massive amount to see the Blades lift this trophy - as a kid that was the one that mattered, seemingly Liverpool lifting it every year with a couple of Arsenal's thrown in.
Was that the trophy awarded when we won the League in 1897/8 (whenever it was)?
Far better than something SkyBet knocked up a couple of years ago!
I think the original trophy is in the football museum, I remember it having a much bigger base than the current. It is though an exact copy of the original trophy.
Had a quick check, it was first awarded in 1890, and as I thought the base has been changed and is at the National Football museum.
Just for confirmation. There we are on the left of this close-up
different traditionBest start scrapping silver medals then, not to mention bronze.

They can just give us a years supply of Peroni.
Why.
Tournaments in which prizes down to 3rd have their rules for that.
Let's give everyone a trophy.
Don't want anyone to not feel like one of life's winners do we?
That route doesn't devalue a completion or give the totally wrong idea everyone's a winner and life isn't full of those who don't win does it?
2nd place wins promotion, giving them a smaller trophy/plate/carriage clock/ whatever is just recognition of that.
Personally I couldn't care less like but I have no problem with a team being awarded with some sort of physical/symbolic item for what is a bloody fantastic achievement.
They should. What does a silver medal mean? It means you’re the best loser. Out of all the losers, you came first.Best start scrapping silver medals then, not to mention bronze.
