It’s a 3 team mini league. I.e. the three teams that have just been promoted are in a mini league to finish 3rd bottom
 

For anyone who enjoys their non league football, Stocksbridge Park Steels have had a fantastic season, finishing 3rd, and play Belper Town at Bracken Moor tomorrow in the play off semi final, hoping to reach the Northern Premier League, just one step below Conference North. So if anyone fancies a pint whilst watching a game in a tidy stadium, the weather forecast looks fantastic.

Ideally they would have the "European super league" to remove the 6 big money hitters but if that didn't happen its how you divide it. You probably add 2 teams and shift the EFL leagues up to fill the gaps but not sure unless big investment from the additional sides it would make too much difference straight away. The gap is clearly getting bigger and bigger going into the last round of fixtures Ipswich are 15 points adrift of safety, that gap could well be larger come the end of the season. I think in part the additional UEFA club competitions haven't helped the Championship as even the UEFA Conference League could get opened out to at least 7th place. There are constantly at least 4 Champions league teams and another 2 in the Europa League. In a 20 team league when nearly half are getting extra revenue from UEFA matches and then also positional money from the Premier League the gap financially is getting wider and wider.
The major problem is with the owners and how much they are willing to gamble and how much spare change they have. You could spend £100million in August and another £100million in January go down and go bust/fall foul of FFP or you could somehow fluke it and stay up. Most teams have been playing the half way non commitment of bringing in a couple of additions and hoping it's enough but knowing if they go down it's not the end of the world as the parachute payments and income from the Premier League will be enough to see a promotion push pretty quickly.

For me I'd make it

5th plays 6 at 5th ground
4th plays winner at 4th ground
3rd plays winner at 3rd ground

All ties 1 match, ET and if still level the home team goes through.

Give some actual benefit to finishing higher. And if the 6th place team goes up they've done it by winning 3 away games.

That’s the fairest but then you lose the showpiece final, not that I’d care about that, but the powers that be would.

Also, every 10 point difference in the league counts for a goal. Let’s face it the team in 6th should face an almost insurmountable challenge if the one in third has the same gap as they do to 24th. Why the fuck should they start on apparent parity?

It will get revamped when the premier league decide that the 3 coming up going straight back down every season is harming the brand and get the league reduced to 18 teams, with 1 up and 1 down. Meaning they get the less games they have wanted for the last how many years. This will be there next crusade after they get the league cup scrapped.

4th vs 5th/6th for the right to go to Wembley.

it is a bit of a kicker that a rampant season can come down to 2/3 games, compounded this year by us being out of form and the team coming into 6th is in good form but a good way behind (Miwaw).

Can 100% see the above happening especially if like this season there was the possibility of 12 teams playing in an UEFA competition next season, the only downside of getting rid of the league cup is the Europa league spot that goes with it, not sure who decides on how those are allocated but I guess that could end up as the next best in the league below the currently Europa Leaguers but above the conference League?

This is my thought as well.

Mentioned it in another thread a few months back.

Give it a couple more years of the 3 promoted going straight back down and the conversations will start.

If L###s spend as much as the rumours say and they still come straight back down, this might start the discussions earlier.
 
I'll raise one of the most convoluted play off systems I can think of - the Swedish Allsvenksan Ice Hockey to decide promotion and relegation

League splits
Top 6 go straight to the play offs
7 vs 10, 8 vs 9 play off over two legs to see which of the other two make up the full eight team play off.

They all play each other three times.

Whoever finishes top 4 then plays a best of 7 series - 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3 to get to the final

The winners of that play a best of 7 to see who wins the Allsvenskan.

The next stage is a play off against one of the bottom two of the SHL - those teams have had a best of 7 between themselves to see who is safe and who has to play off against the Allsvenskan winner.

Allsvenskan winner and SHL loser play off in a best of 7 to see if anyone goes up or down.

As it is this season, MODO who were promoted a few years back will play Djurgarden in the promotion/relegation play off series

If that makes any sense whatsoever...!
 

I'm in favour of the top three getting auto-promotion. From fourth to seventh place, go to the playoffs.
 
Traditionally wasn't it 2 up 2 down between all the leagues? I can't believe money didn't have a lot to do with the changes and nothing to do with being fair.
Probably needed to find a few extra fixtures to keep Wembley viable as well - without looking it up I can't remember when playoffs commenced and when the new stadium was built

2 up and 2 down in top two divisions until 1973-74 season, 4 up and 4 down between 3rd and 4th division since 4th division started. Play offs started in the mid 1980s

I've just read that the stadium opened in 2007 so that's probably knocked n my theory on the head ;) Still stand by money being a large part of it though.

I like this format. Or, give 3rd place the option to pick their opponent from the other three teams and whether they would like to play at home or away in the first leg.
7th place shouldn't be in the play-offs in my opinion (6th is pushing it).
