The loser mentality at this club

We were in 107 and it was like being in G and H block at home, singing for most of the game, but the sound just doesn't travel at Wembley, I bet people 10 - 15 rows in front of us couldn't even hear us.

And yes, Sunderland were quiet after we went 1 - 0 up. They came to life after the VAR decision.

I was in block 523 and the atmosphere and singing was good around me too until they scored.

At the actual game sunderland fans offered nothing until they equalised.
Agree totally

All mouth in Trafalgar Square , on the tube , before kick off - game starts , Kiefer nearly scores , Utd go 1-0 up - silence for whole of first half . If Utds 2nd goal stands they would have been crying .

We gave them the game through poor game management. We played 10 yards deeper than we should have when we should have been putting our foot on their throats and squeezing them . Instead we invited them to play themselves back into a game they had virtually no chance of winning .

Poor management- no wonder our fans went quiet - we’ve seen it all before and knew what was coming

There is a losers mentality at the club when it comes to big one off games.

We never win! Never

My 8 year old said he had butterflies I told him that’s understandable but to prepare for the worse. Sheffield United don’t win games like this and that Sunderland would score again.

The positive is at least we make these big games on a fairly regular basis whilst others finish 30+ points in our shadow or never have decent cup runs.

However, it’s going to take an extremely positive, larger than life character to ‘wash’ the club clean of the mentality that’s now set in.

Our youth system is our main strength and we've used it to bankroll us before. Sure, we often have to sell at a much earlier stage but that's the least of our worries.

Our main issue is foreign scouting and the refusal of our manager to use it.

I think we tick youth development and with Cooper/Burrows we've signed two of the best players from clubs below us.

Look at Anel, Bergr and Vini. Three players from abroad who have worked out. The trick is that players from foreign leagues need time to adapt. Slimani and Larouci are both Championship regulars. Traore scored 13 goals for the Swiss champions. We expected them to hit the ground running when they need time to adjust.
During the summer I said I wanted to keep Traore to see what he could do in the Championship as they Premier League was clearly a step too far for him. I don't think foreign players need time as other clubs sign them and they have instant impacts. I think more are impeded by our "style" of football where they have to adapt to fit into it, instead of us adapting the "style" to fit them into it. That's poor management in a nutshell.

Pick a system that suits your players, don't force players to change they play to fit your system. This is why Amorim has been atrocious at Man Utd but Ruud got a tune out of them for a short period before he arrived.

We’ve tried the new identity thing several times.

Think back to Robson and Slavisa Jukanovic.
The new identity thing is always a big mistake and never works.
Well the Sheffield United Way clearly isn't the way forward. Yes we have tried pathetically to break into the "Modern Way" of Football in the past and failed. Other clubs in the Premier League have moved with the times hence the fact they are in a far better state than our "big city club with a small town mentality".

I suppose 19 out of 20 Premier League clubs are wrong having Directors of Football/Sporting Directors. 16 out of 20 PL clubs are wrong having foreign "coaches". 20 PL clubs in mid April this year had 70.7% minutes used by foreign players compared to 35.4% by us, partly due to our historical buy/loan British "up and at em" recruitment strategy.

Day one of his 3 years at Forest?
We didn't sign him from Forest and he only played once for them. He was 17 when he signed for them and was in their academy until he was 19-20 so that's not really a valid argument. We signed him from a Swedish team and he hit the ground running.

Give over. He spend 3 years in their Academy system being trained how to play football in this country. Of course he knows how to play in this country.

Look at the young foreign players most Premier League clubs sign. It's very rare for them to be playing regularly within that first season. Some go on loan, some just need to be trained up ready.

Agree. I was in 108 and it barely carried that far

If the same players or manager had lost 10 play off games in a row, I'd be worried.

That 10 different teams with different managers lost 10/10 play off games, it's not the same. We've won plenty of semis, which you're including in with the finals - do they not count as big games won?
There's one constant I'm afraid but you aren't allowed to mention it.

It's become psychological with a large element of that variable. That's a much tougher fix unfortunately. I was on the row with my mate and my younger brother and his three mates. Only my mate could watch the rest of the first half after the disallowed goal, and the rest of the game after the equaliser: "that's us losing now". How do you even begin fixing something like that? Would it have been different if the second counted? Maybe. Or would we have collectively shit ourselves?

That said football games are won all the time by a team that is second best. Teams get the breaks. Refereeing decisions, good fortune. It never seems to happen to us.

Players have no idea about noise when they're playing no matter how much they say they were inspired by it.

And our players have played in total nervous silence almost every game this season because their performances have had fans jittery in every game.

We've been unconvincing in practically every game, hanging on and biting fingernails in practically every game because we have only been winning by an odd goal and gifted total possession to shit teams that proved they weren't good enough to equalise.

Hardly any sort of environment that is going to provide a good atmosphere, blame the fans as much as you want if you want to live in complete denial and make excuses for the spineless bottleless cunts
I can assure you Players are completely aware of the crowd noise etc and inspired, or the opposite by it.

On the crowds/atmosphere thing, if we are truly that influential on how we perform us fans should be paid to attend games.

This isn't a dig at anyone at the club but consider that:

- We haven't won a trophy in 100 years

- We've lost in 10 play-off attempts

- We are the largest club in Europe to have never qualified to play in any European competition.

- We are continuously adversely affected by ridiculous situations (COVID, Tevez, Evans, Segers etc.)

- We continuously bottle the big games.

There's something very wrong with our club in this regard, is there anything that can be done to change it?
Agree. We normally go up 2nd when miles in front and we never win huge games to avoid relegations or one off play off games to get promoted.

If you want see the difference watch the COVID games. Chalk and cheese. I stopped watching football altogether it was that bad. Every team.
