Why I think we can catch Leeds

I went to Old Trafford yesterday with a Fulham mate (away end). We got onto the topic of the championship with a few, they (Fulham fans) keep a track of Burnley because of Scott Parker and have seen some games but what I did find amazing was how good they thought Leeds were and the difference between if the current top 3 came up vs chances in the Premier League. They wrote us off completely (which on current squad is difficult to disagree with) but it was Leeds will stay up. My point on that was unless they have at least £100million to invest in the squad they, us or the play off winners (if that's how it turns out) are all in the same boat of struggling. If you look at the 3 that went up last season all of Leicester. Ipswich and Leeds finished the championship season on 90+ points with Southampton only 3 behind before they won the playoffs and all 3 of them are occupying the bottom 3 Premier League spots. Since Fulham's promotion from the Championship, they have spent £100's of millions in both infrastructure with a brand new £100million stand plus signing players such as Berge for £25million plus many others, their 3rd summer back was a spend of nearly £90million, yes they sold Pereira for circa £50million to Bayern which helped but they did buy him for £25mill 2 seasons before and for a club where their average attendance is under 25,000 matchday revenue streams are limited and they rely on "tourist fans" and corporate "fans" in that new stand where a single regular ticket is £80-120 !

To compete in the Premier League you have to either gamble like Forest did or have another thing you can offset FFP against such as infrastructure. Ultimately though it means we need to be investing around £100million every season into the playing squad and more if there are other projects to try and make the club sustainable. Although the Premier League is the "promise land" it does get frustrating in a sense of yes we could get up this season but realistically the knives will be out as soon as we are losing a few.

If you look at Leeds strongest eleven, I’m struggling to see how anyone could confidently say they’d stay up.

Burnley and Leeds are no different to us. To have any chance of staying up, we’d all need to sign at least 5 or 6 players to go straight into the starting eleven.

Totally agreed and that's the main problem although some of those 5/6 could be loans we have to replace the loans we already have anyway and we are looking a premium £. If £10 mill gives you Tom Cannon those 5/6 players are easily in the £80-90mill mark, quality wise that we need.

Point for point, we are better than them.
If you add in the 2 point deduction (which is relevant here) and remove the 6 points they got from our games so that we compare both team's points gained from all the other opposition, we would have collected 5 points more than them. They won't be gettint any more points from us, so future PPG is now very relevant.
Yesterday's 'slip' at home to WBA, and our continued ability to get results (best away form in the league) brought this right into focus.
How sweet would it be for us to snatch the title from their already entitled hands...and for Burnley to pip them to second!!
Wishful thinking!
Leeds beat us at Home and Away. You cannot change or dismiss that fact now.
Right or wrong, the 2 point deduction will still be there at the end of the season. No one can wish it away.

Your opening statement is debatable. Both sides still have 11 games to play. Both sides could still drop points. Nothing is certain, but inventing different circumstances changes nothing.

I hope we win the league, but I also hope we don’t end up in the play offs. Anything else is a bit like Trump making his mind up, and sticking to it.

leeds beat ipswich twice , nay thrashed them , but missed out

anythings possible , we cant write off sunderland 11 games 33 points is a quarter of a season yet to compete over

we dont play outside sheffield ( 4 games ) till next month,,,3 of leeds next 4 are away,, we could find it of use

I'm considering using my overdraft to stick a bit of money on us and Burnley. Leeds' run-in looks easy, but it looked easy last time they bottled it too. We know there are no easy games in the Championship.
That sounds dangerous! Even if your logic is sound!

leeds are the pinup boys of the media especially sky they cant wait to get leeds back in the premier league and they certainly dont hide the fact its also quite obvious hinchcliffe and goodman are biased against us saw highlights of leeds v west brom and baggies had enough chances to bury them if we had got that 2nd goal last monday when we were on top we would have won that game its nowhere near over yet and wouldnt it be hilarious if leeds ended up in the play offs

While Leeds are a better team than us on their day (beaten us twice, facts dont lie) anything can happen in the Champ. The gap inst massive either - defo catchable.

According to data on Google 88 points is the average for an auto spot and the 5 highest totals not to achieve automatic are 3 x 90 and 2 x89 points ...one of which we gotScreenshot_20250310-072130_Chrome.webp
So history says 95 would be cetain of automatic
