Why do

Why do away teams allow us to kick towards the kop second half ,when they win the toss ?
Because it allows them to kick towards their fans second half?

Used to be different back in’t day though. Used to walk around the ground at half time to go to the other end.

The solution, surely, is to have a revolving pitch, like a turntable. It ought to be possible with today’s technology.

Because away teams also get to attack their fans in the second half. Everyone's a winner.

I recall that, during the 1st top flight season under Bassett (the greatest ever escape which never gets mentioned as it was before the Premier League and therefore didn't really happen), we didn't score at the BL end until the final match of the season, when Agana bagged 2 there against Norwich (when the kop had no roof).
I don't know if that season was an anomaly but I'd be willing to bet that if analysed there would be a noticeable difference between goals scored at either end of the stadium. I don't know if this is a good case for having our fans behind both goals, or an improved kop atmosphere, but might be a good place to start for serious dialogue between fans and club to improve atmosphere.

Is that stat right? In our first win v Forest, I'm sure (but memory is not as good as it used to be) we scored at least one at the Lane End.

Because I'm still in the afterglow of Billy's winner, I won't point out that I already said this in post 6, and I gave you a like for the reminder of walking round to the Lane end if United were kicking that way in the second-half, courtesy of the 3-sided ground. The miserable old gits there (younger than I am now, probably), did not welcome the arrival of kids with rattles.
I think you could do this at some other grounds, but I can't remember which.

No, all 3 goals were at the kop end in that match (all 5 goals in the match were in the 2nd half)
Just found the video, and you are quite right. Celebrating Billy's goal has probably cost me some more brain cells. Please don't tell Mrs HBT - all married men will understand why.

Indeed you did Sir! I didn't read all the posts before I replied, but it was an obvious answer of course. Thank you for the "like". Yes I remember walking from the kop to Bramall lane end and back at half time, or the other way round. I remember sometimes taking time out to explore the pavilion. In fact I remember watching part of a game (I think it was an FA Cup match v Northampton - a night match which we won about 6-0) from the pavilion.

Now, there's another team that had a 3 sided ground for years - Northampton Town. I wonder if they also used to walk from end to end at half-time? Although the number of sides of the ground shouldn't really have anything to do with it.

I don't think we ever went from the Kop to the Lane End if we were kicking that way first half, but regularly did at half-time if we were kicking the 'wrong way'. And my earliest big cup matches were spent standing near the Pavilion, to avoid the crush. Rubbish place to watch from, mind.

My first match, in the 1970's. was the Sheffield derby at Bramall lane, which the Blades won 3-2 with a goal from substitute John Tudor. I went to that match on my own. I'd asked the kids in my class at school which was the best part of the ground to go and watch it from. I was informed that John Street was best because it was easier to see more from there. I remember being somewhere near the tunnel and hardly being able to see a thing - I wasn't very tall back then. The old blokes in the flat caps pushed me forward to the front so I could see and I ended up standing near to where the disabled folk were in their wheelchairs.

When I started going with mates we used to go on the kop and get in early to go on the "high step". That was a great vantage point for kids. Could see everything from there. But you had to be in the ground 1.5 hours before kick off to claim a place.

The most unusual place I've ever been to watch a game is when I sat cross-legged at the side of the pitch at Darlington during that end of season promotion game, along with thousands of others, what a day out that was!
