Who'd want the job?

No money, instant success required, sacked in a few months if not promoted by november.......

I wouldn't want it.

Even with our cut budget:

High wage bill for league we're in / talented crop of youngsters already blooded / higher prestige position than all other clubs in bottom two leagues / lots of upwards potential

Yeah, no one would want the job.

Of course, we won't get the RDMs of this world, but we should have the pick of the better lower league managers and those out of work for some time.

There's no doubt that the higher expectations and expectation that he must get results is there, but that should exist in every instance of a big club in a lower league. That said, I'd like to see the new manager be given some time to implement change, but that doesn't happen.... from the stands to the boardroom.

Nevertheless, to decry the position as one that no one wants is exaggeration in the least.

How far we've come eh? We could even be so audacious to go for A. Irvine !!!!

Football managers, by the very nature of the beast, have massive egos. How many will look at the job and think "There's no way I can turn that club around"? Fuck all, that's how many!

Look at the potential, and if you can't see it with the first team at the moment, look at the attendance we'll be getting for the Youth Cup Final.

Put those two things together and you'll have a list as long as your arm to choose from.

Yes, we've dropped from the Premiership to League 1 in a handful of seasons; does that mean we won't attract a good level of applications this time round?

Controversial, but how about giving Steve McClaren another crack at English football? He said recently he'd be willing to manage in the Championship, i may be having delusions of grandeur, but i still think we're a more attractive proposition then half the teams in that league.

Also, isn't he mates with McCabe, or am i making that up?

In all honesty, I think this job is just the kind of thing Roberto Di Matteo would be looking at to rebuild his career. Did a great job at MK and was doing well at WBA until a bad run saw him get the sack. With the potential we have he would look at this job as a way of building something and taking a club back into the Premiership. Can't imagine he'd be cheap mind, so it won't happen.

People would laugh at us, but I'd give him a go. That said, I think he's out of our league financially.

He'd either be wildly successful, or akin to Bryan Robson.

Edit: this is re. Shteve McLaren. I'd definitely take RDM, but he'd want money we don't have IMO.

I have heard a few rumours about the 'Dutch' maestro McClaren. Can't see it happening and I would have him down as leaving when a better job comes up. I don't Ithink I would want him to come back and leave us in worse shit.

McClaren was interviewed on Sky at the weekend and didnt rule out returning to a non PL role said he quite liked the idea of building something. It would be a bit of a drop though, Champions League and Bundesliga to Football League division 3.

It's genuinely not beyond the bounds of imagination.

Especially as the two Mc's are mates by all accounts.

Still think he'll need cash for both wages and to build a squad though and it's something we don't have.

Despite what we think we are still an attractive proposition to many managers out there. A large club with a fan base (and potential fan base) not inkeeping with their current league status is what many managers want - a chance to make a name for themselves. Saying that us fans need to lower our expectations, Mourinho or Hiddink are not coming.

I think the best we can hope for is a Simon Grayson type figure that's done well at a smaller club on a limited budget and is ready to step up to the next level. One guy that fits that bill is Keith Hill from Rochdale. He's worked extensively with Rochdale's youth side before improving the side's position each year he's been with the club finishing 9th in League 1 in the season just gone. This is all on a shoestring on crowds of 3,000

None of the other candidates inspire me that much to be honest, other than Kevin Keegan, purely for the rollecoaster factor.

UTB!

Top five in order of preference from that list:
1) SoD (being reticent to work with the Youth squad is an issue, but that may be due to the quality of Donny's youth)M
2) Di Matteo
3) McLaren
4) Hill
5) Strachan (unpopular I know)

Top Five in order of who I wouldn't want anywhere near the club (of which there's a shit load on that list)
1) Bothroyd
2) Hart
3) Magilton
4) Dowie
5) Wilkins
(I refuse to include Blackwell as it just won't happen)

Top five for shits and giggles
1) Keegan
2) Rosler (wat?)
3) Keane
4) Windass
5) O'Leary

Realistic targets we came up with last night in no particular order who would fit the bill:

1.) Hill
2.) Tisdale
3.) Wilder

McCabe has dug his own hole...........................
he's either skint or thick..............or perhaps both, thats assuming he is a Blade.

Thanks for that entirely relevant on-topic post BB.

You know what.....I never thought of Roy Keane until it was mentioned on here. He's not a bad shout actually. Could be a possible applicant as one would assume he is keen (excuse the pun) to get back into management. Not sure if he's a good choice but unless he's actually in the running it's probably not worth pondering.

Are we talking about the Roy Keane who spent a fortune at Sunderland and got them promoted before falling out with the majority of his players, who then went to Ipswich and spent another fortune turning them into a mid-table Championship side?

Sounds like the very fella. I'm not debating whether he's a good choice or not. All I'm saying is he could be a realistic candidate. I dont see a better suitor out there for him at the moment.

He isn't a better choice than the three I listed previously.

That's doing him a favour, they were 2 points ahead of us in 19th when they sacked him in January. Middlesborough were on the same points as us then, shame MA couldn't have had the same effect as Mowbray and Jewell even though it did take Mowbray another month or so to get them going.

Not sure I entirely agree, though I would prefer Keith Hill given a choice between him and Keane. As I said before, I'm not saying Keane is a good candidate because he would be nowhere near my first choice. I dont think that big names should be ruled out though, simply because of our past experiences. Being a household name doesnt necessarily mean you cant do the job well. Has anyone stopped to think that the big names we appointed might not have been good managers???? Their fame is irrelevant.
