Who will go down as a legend?

George Underwood in 1951. Didnt play in any 1st team appearances for Wendy.

Howard Wilkinson was our youth player but didnt play in our 1st team before joining Wendy in 1962 and played 22 1st team games for them.

Roy Hill left us for them in 1976 but didnt play in any 1st team games for either club

Earle Barrett played for us on loan from Everton in the late 1990s. His next club was Wednesday, but I'm not sure if he returned to Everton and played any more games for them before moving. But in any case, srictly speaking he couldn't be classed as one of 'our' players.

The only players that I can find who played first team league or cup matches for us and transferred directly to Wednesday are Billy Kellie and Bernard Oxley. But you have to go back to 1934 with regard to Oxley and 1893 for Mellor.

Why isn't Currie ever slated for his move to Leeds? Not having a pop it's a general question

I'm not sure that he had any choice in the matter.

Financially, we were up against it. Nothing changes there! But the situation was very tight. We had built a new stand in order to generate more revenue to be able to compete in the first division. Things looked rosey after the 1974-5 season. We finished 6th and still had the majority of that squad at the start of the next season. There was no reason to expect the disaster that unfolded.

Having been relegated we were looking at reduced revenue, but with interest payments on the south stand to meet. Players would inevitably have to be sold.

In those days the club had far more control over the player. I don't know what offers we got for Currie, but I suspect the club sold him to Leeds because that was the best offer.

If we rewind 8 or 9 years to when Mick Jones went to Leeds. I believe that transfer was done without the player having any say in the matter. I think Jones is on record as saying he was happy at Bramall Lane and didn't have any desire to move (or something similar to that).

Given how agents and players often seem to have the whip hand now, it is easy to forget that wasn't the case 40+ years ago.
