Who went on pitch?

I just posted this on Facebook:
Well done to the Blades for getting to Wembley. But I don't understand why we had a pitch invasion, we've won nothing and all we did was qualify for the PO final by beating a side 1-0 over two legs after finishing 17 pts clear of them! Quite embarrassing. That said I don't really know that a pitch invasion for a team finishing 2nd in the 3rd tier is particularly massive either. Professional job done in getting to Wembley but I am underwhelmed by it all

I do think the late goal heightened the excitement and therefore the likelihood of it happening. A lot of the ground was ready for ET and we nicked it so beautifully :)

Also, any pigs taking the piss about the pitch invasion last night, would do well to be reminded about the one which involved a relegation and the assault of opposition players a couple of seasons ago.

It's our last home game of the season, that's a definate. Dosen't this usually happen anyway?
It was stupid to put players at risk though. Personally I stayed on the kop as I'm too unfit and lazy to be bothered with going on the pitch. :-)

Actually I can understand the pitch invasion. If we had done them comfortably with the same squad we've had since Christmas then no, but we've just managed to get to the final after a great show of unity from a threadbare squad pulling together, and a timely winner from a striker struggling for goals. Should we be happy about beating a team 1-0 that finished 17 points behind us? No. Should we be relieved about a much improved display from a team that looked low on belief and form? I can certainly understand the release of tension.

That said, I dislike pitch invasions. So undignified.

Quite so - it's also rather difficult from the top tier of the Westfield Corner.....

I reminded them of this after they went up the other week... funnily enough they called me bitter, but i was merely pointing out that I was glad that the opposition players managed to get off without being asssaulted.

Jesus Christ, lets celebrate the little bit of joy we have you miserable chuffs.

I remember having a pitch invasion after beating Coventry in the cup for a day out at Manchester United's stadium.

We'd just got to an FA Cup semi final. That's acceptable

Why are we all tutting about the pitch invaders? Looked like a spontaneous outpouring of relief to me, after a diabolical few weeks. Let the kids have their fun. Sinclair bleating about player injury, what a tart!

UTB. And if any of you Mary Whitehouse types are thinking about sitting near me at Wembers, tha can fook off ;)

As we are already thin on the ground player wise. Lets say collins and Maguire were injured after the final whistle last night and are unable to play the final. We all know how we missed them before. Not worth the risk

We should be happy because it was a very professional performance given our ability to score at the moment. We would have been screwed if Stevenage had scored, can't see two goals in last nights team.

Agree with the second comment

The pitch invasion was as embarrassing as a civic reception for finishing 2nd in the 3rd tier.

It was idiotic and I'm glad to say plenty of people around me in the kop were less than happy with those morons dancing about on the pitch.

What would the idiots do if we actually won anything?
The fact that so many ,adults, ran onto the field made it acceptable for the kids to do it!
As I said in another thread
Identify the bump ties and either ban them from Wembley or at least put them at the back of the queue for tickets Let them pay £88-00 for a ticket they will not run on again

Pitch Invasions are spontaneous events.
I can't imagine anyone last night was analysing where the result sits in a list of Blades acheivements or whether it merited an invasion or not it was a joyeous spur of the moment thing.
I only had the pleasure of watching it on the box (er... ok a fuzzy internet feed) but none of it looked particularly embarrassing. It was nice to see our 1 fit striker getting a bit of attention. It's well known how much confidence can help a striker.
Why not celebrate? To get to Wembley is an achievement most fans did not expect at the start of the season. I'll stand corrected if anyone can find the poll on here. I couldn't be arsed; too tired after celebrating last night!

Sounds like you were near me!

It was embarrasing really. We're in a 3rd Division Play Off Final FFS. And to think we all thought a civic reception for finishing 2nd was bad.

This threat of injury thing, behave yourselves - was there a risk of a few sore shoulders from all those pats. When did we turn into such miserable bastards?!

Sure most on here did worse when they were younger. It's like an episode of Miss Marple on here sometimes. ;)

I went on (walked). People had been on there for a few minutes before I got there. Just had my picture took in front of the Kop and went back off. Was a waste of time in retrospect - in particular as I later found I was blinking the photo anyway.

I remember there being invasions all the time at the end of the season in the late 90s/early 00s (and I'd assume before). No one seemed to be too bothered by them then. Why the change? If people are acting like knobheads punching opposition players etc. then fair enough, but from what I saw it was peaceful.

The second one was a waste of time though. Although from the back of the Kop, it just looked like a load of teenagers.

The thing that got me was the announcer shouting "clear the pitch" whilst at the same time we continued to play loud music encouraging people to celebrate and generally jump around. If you want people to clear the pitch, stop playing "I gotta feeling" so people can actually hear you'

Also (and slightly off topic) well done to United for again cancelling out a spontaneous chant by the fans by playing loud music of the song they were already singing and killing the chant dead. Thumbs up!

I can't believe some people naivety in thinking pitch invasions are safe. All it takes is for one enthusiastic fan to jump on the back of a player or their friend (being so excited) and go completely over the top on to their head, breaking their neck or spine. Or for a fan to trip up in all the excitement and getting trampled / crushed by people who are running behind him who don't see him. You may say that players do this all the time when they score i.e jump on the backs on others, but there is only 23 (two teams plus ref) of them on the pitch and so it would be easy for the medics to spot any problems. Some fan does this in a pitch invasion, the medical staff at the ground would have no way so spotting this. The fan would lose vital seconds in receiving treatment and his situation could get worse by being moved when the best case would for him/her to stay still. Also, how would the medics get thru all those fans?

So you see. pitch invasions are not safe.

I'm actually not sure if that post is serious or not? Maybe I missed the long historical list of pitch invasion injuries? I definitely think people are over-reacting to pretty much a bit of enthusiasm and which happened most last games of the season in the 80s and 90s.

As for big crowds and medical problems - how do you think crowds cope at festivals when there are a lot more than the few hundred from last night jumping up and down in a field. You make it sound like a crowd of more than 50 excitable people is a death trap!

I invaded the pitch in 1971 (but then again we actually had something to celebrate ...and I was only 12). My old man went ballistic.

It's a serious post. The point is that everyone has been lucky so far but all you need is just one person who is a bit too enthusiastic, had a bit too much to drink to go over and injury their neck.

At festivals, medics still have the same problem in getting thru to the injured person. There has been number of occasions where someone has jumped of the stage expecting the fans to catch them only to find the crowd opening up. Plus there have been examples of people being throw up the air in excitement only for them to be dropped.

How do we all get through life when we have to encounter such dangers as crossing the road or having a shower or invading pitches (which I couldn't be bothered to do, I went home and missed all the traffic thankyaverymuch)? Oh, I don't know. We'd best all wear extra cotton wool to Wembley in case we actually score. We might get jostled about a bit.

He's referring to players getting injured from over exuberant fans

I didn't go on the pitch* - sat in the South Stand. I thought it's what always happens in these situations a load of kids - I then saw a bloke on the pitch who looked well into his 50's having his photo taken with what I assume were his grandkids.

* Would have gone on - just couldn't get my zimmer frame down the steps

Not only that, he was talking about people being trampled and all sorts.

Besides, the players aren't made of glass, they're honed athletes who are able to take a bit of vigorous hugging and some jumping up and down. They jump all over each other during goal celebrations.

Health and Safety is necessary on some occasions, this is overreacting.
