Quite a few in the mix but for me i would go for Warnock for the fact that he made us into a team with backbone that stood no nonsense.
Their is a case for many more that built good teams but also brought in some players that were a waste.
Who would you go for?

How about Howard Kendall?

He bought in some very good proven players.

Bassett also assembled a rag tag bunch of misfits and turned them into a very effective units, sum of its parts etc.

Warnock did fine in the end but when you look at strikers it did feel like the old adage if you throw enough shit at the wall some will stick.

Wilder recruitment below PL level - Hero
Wilder recruitment at PL level - Zero

Agree Howard Kendall, some excellent signings like Don Hutchison, (pity about John Ebbrell who only played 45 minutes for us before retiring with a career ending injury. We were shafted by Everton on that one.

I think Wilder had his fair share of stinkers pre PL as well tbh

Chris Hussey
Ryan Leonard
Samir Carruthers
Lee Evans
James Wilson
Ricky Holmes
Michael Verrips

The biggest difference was that he binned them off because he could afford to. Harder to get rid when you’ve signed a flop for millions of pounds.

Wilder or Bassett.

For his more recent cock ups, Wilders pre PL recruitment was off the charts good.

Bollocks was it....he played the numbers game, buy enough and a few will come good....plus there were some proper gambles in there that could have gone either way, proper journeymen players (Didzy, Leon, Duffy)....his recruitment was OK/average at best, it was certainly never off the chart

In terms of value for money ? Surely Bassett

Agana, Deane, Bryson, Roberts, Tracey, Morris, Wood, Booker, Rostron, Bradshaw, Hill, Francis etc were mainly plucked from nowhere and resulted in a memorable few years

Without thinking about it too hard, I think Ian Porterfield made some good signings, Edwards, Morris, Glenn Cockerill, Paul Stancliffe etc
He also brought in the 'experienced' brigade such as ...Thompson,Lewington,Mortimer,McHale,Eves,McNaught,Richardson(Paul) and Ryan

John Harris by a country mile.

John Flynn £5,000
Billy Dearden £10,000
Gil Reece £10,000
Tony Currie £26,500 - what a steal
David Powell £28,500
Eddie Colquhoun £35,000
Trevor Hockey £40,000
Colin Addison £40,000

Built the second promotion team of 70/71 after the Board had dismantled his first one and sold off the crown jewels in Jones and Birchenall. Brought through the likes of Badger, Salmons and Woodward in addition to Jones and Birchenall from the juniors.

Then our rise from the depths of Div 3 to 5th in the PL must have passed you by 😂.

Rowley, not Harris signed Flynn, Powell and Colquhoun. He also signed Tudor, Hemsley and Crawford
