I hate to say this BUT ................ great potential for a Sheffield club to have a team competing in the Premiership with crowds most of the other clubs would 'die for'............ I hope we've not missed the bus ! know what i mean ?

I hate the fact I know exactly what you mean, and I really don't want to agree with you, but I just hope he gets screwed for tax fraud next year to shatter any of those dreams :D

Can we stop referring to other people's opinions as "pathetic" and "drivel" please?

That isn't what we would call constructive debate and very quickly leads to an argument.

We're getting sick of the people who are here, not to join in with the ethos of a site where everyone can have their say respectfully and opinions are countered with the same grace, but with people who are here to shout the loudest and declare themselves martyrs to some made up cause when someone has the bare-faced cheek to disagree with them.

If that's the kind of place you want, set up a blog and broadcast your opinions to your heart's content with no reply.

If you actually value being a member of this place, you will heed these words. If not, we'll be issuing forum holidays to bring people into line.

It isn't people's opinions we and others have a problem with, it's the aggressive manner in which they are repeated.

In my opinion this all has to do with when you were introduced to the Blades. Myself, starting in 1977 had to go through the Div 3 relegation etc.......and do you know what, I loved going to the match whatever with my silky Junior Blades scarf tied to the wrist.

I'm with Alien on this one; my opinion is that t'internet allows too much familiarity and that given a more stand off approach i.e. Green Un letters page and the odd praise 'n' grumble we would all be much happier for it, enjoying our beer and having time to mellow before the van turns up with said green rag instead of busily putting the world to rights on the bus home from the iPhone or other generic mobile communication devices.

I have a season ticket, my kids have a season ticket, I don't overly examine the league table, I'm gutted when we lose, I'm over it by the time I've got home, I tell my kids we'll be better next week. Enjoy it for what it is and what it always will be, and if that is mediocrity then embrace it.

It always gives me a chuckle that folk get so wound up over things they have little or no control over in regards to football clubs.

For me it's more about spending some time with my mates and having a decent day out - afterall that's why I work during the week isn't it?

I try not to get too into this accounts business because, quite frankly, 95% of it sails over my head and I know I can't change a thing about it anyway. I don't wanna know what money we're spending where, where it's coming from and what we're planning on doing with it etc. Just give me some hope they'll be a decent offering come Saturday afternoon. If we lose - hey ho shit happens and if we win - happy days

In short - where's that bloody thanks button gone?! :D

Spot on Wards.

Christ, even when we got relegated in 06-07 i still had a fun day out.

Basically professional football is a big bag of shite, but going to the football with your mates, having a pint or two and a good day out, now that's gold.

Reece in place of Scullion surely ?
What I was saying in a cack handed way was that beyond the first 11 we had little else and you need a squad of at least 18 these days.

i'd die happy if we could get a to be a stable mid table team in the top flight for a few seasons. i dont think its beyond us, if we get our house in order.

My thoughts exactly, mate. With all our assets and crowd potential we should not be trailing the likes of Stoke, Wolves, WBA and many, many more.

Hope you are well by the way?

I think if we were having this discussion a few years ago there would be nothing to stop us from equaling or bettering the Wolves, Wigans and West Broms of the world. However the rules change to keep the top clubs at the top and seemingly change by the year. For example the changes to the parachute payments which will see the payments be bigger and issued for longer will mean that barring a major investment from a benefactor the clubs that come down will be the clubs that go up the following year.

The fact is taking the potential fan base, resources, history and facilities we may be a bigger club than Wigan or Blackpool or the teams currently pushing for promotion like QPR, but we are light years behind these teams in the only factor that will really secure us prolonged Premier League football - finances.

As has been covered many, many many times before in this forum the best chance we had to return to the Premiership quickly was the two seasons after we came down, when we still had the parachute money. Football's changed hugely and the only way we (or any other team) go from long term Championship team to secure Premiership team is through huge amounts of investment.

I know I can't change it, I've loved watching United all my life and for most of that life we've been in the second tier of the football league. Will I stop hoping we assemble a team of world beaters and take the Premiership by storm? No. Will not seeing these hopes come to life? No... UTB!

Your analysis is sound but the sad fact is: We were in the Premier League and made no more than a half-hearted, hope for the best, attempt to stay there. In particular we did not sign a single player of true Premier League quality to augment the decent players we had. If we had, we might well be there as we speak.

McCabe and Warnock should both reflect upon that.

Agree with you. Also Dave Powell rather than Flynn. I loved John Tudor too but Harris didnt rate him

Started following properly late 70's but really early 80's onwards was my time. Edwards, Morris, Hatton, Kenworthy etc etc. But things have changed. I agree totally with the sentiment AB but it has gone from players you saw on a Saturday just being ordinary blokes to them being superstars who you can't get anywhere near. Even at this level they are pulling wages that are utterly ridiculous. They aren't real and the club I used to regard as my own doesn't feel that way any longer. Its all soundbites, marketing and promotional bullshit, Equity shares, Hotels and foreign football clubs.

The Sheffield United I followed was about clown Chairmen who didn't have a clue what they were doing being chased around the globe by interpol, the Inland Revenue and just about anyone else you care to mention. My sister was heavily involved the day Stephen Hinchcliffes house was raided for his files by South Yorkshires finest. I know about dodgy dealing and all manner of shit and you know what, it made me laugh. It was laughable. The people who owned the club were a joke, the three sided ground was a joke. Being in the shadow of the Pigs, that spitting, fighting underdog that gave the big clubs a bloody nose from time to time. There was a spirit about the club that isn't there any longer.

The Dave Bassett era was a pinnacle for me as a Blade. We were a nothing club, we were a shower of crap. Built on nothing signings, with a manager who loved belting the Authorities in the face both in his style and his manner. We went from the third division to the second (following that gutting relegation). I remember being at West Brom the opening day of that season and thinking we were going to get muntered. We took them to pieces. But that was DB and the team he assembled. We got promoted. I remember being at Leicester and thinking at 0-1 we were going to bugger it all up. The flourescent kit, the never say die attitude and all that. Took us to the first division at the time. Then the season we go there. We were supposed to be cannon fodder. Good old Sheffield United, just there to make up the numbers. We went forever without winning. Then when we beat Forest 3-2 it was like we won the World Cup, Champions League and European Championships all at the same time.

We stayed up, we did the double over the pork the next season (3-1 at their place still ranks as my finest ever Blades moment) and you just never knew where we were going to go next. We finished 9th if memory serves me right one season. We ripped up the form book on numerous occasions. I saw Peter Shilton play at BDTBL, I saw Ian Rush when he was good, I threw Mars Bars at Gazza while he pulled us limb from limb, I danced in the North Stand of the Pigs unchallenged. I saw Spurs taken apart 6-0, I saw Brian Deane score the first ever Premiership goal, I saw Tony Agana bought and sold (at just the right time). I saw Glynn Hodges take Manchester fucking United apart almost single handedly (that mans left foot is magic). Sheffield United gave me that to keep. At the twilight of when the game was still a game.

It isn't just Sheffield United that are a resounding disappointment to me. Football is. Football isn't 4-4-2 or who plays up front any longer. Its who owns who, third party interests in players. Who can sue who for most money. Who has the biggest revolving debt, who is going bust next, who is buying who. Equity stakes, Shareholders and the like. We aren't even fans any longer, we are customers.

Give me the trough urinals, the truly appauling food and service. Give me the terraces where you could swear without getting ejected, or told off. It isn't Sheffield United that is dying and changing, its football.

I wouldn't say your post is anything other than a heartfelt opinion and thank fuck for that. Without that this place dies. Without the debate, the "your talking drivel" the claim and counter claim it just turns into a nodding match where we all just sit there like lab rats agreeing with each other.

I got the email from Linz & Foxy this afternoon and while I don't agree with the "jump in line or your out" tone I fully understand where they are coming from. They are probably sick and tired of watching something they have poured days, weeks, months and years of their time into descent into something it wasn't meant to be. Threads descend into who is more right than who. How about you just nod your head and thank someone for having the time and decency to post their opinion. You don't have to agree with it but why not just respect the fact that someone had the time and made the effort to make you think.

There you go, thats me blown out for now.

Agree with a lot of that Bladesway.
Though as a slight antidote, I watched a team last night that costs probably more than any other in wages (and they'll be at obscene levels) and they played football than I'd defy anyone to say wasn't uplifting.

Leicester v Forest? :)

I'll not argue with that Lenners. Every rule has an exception.
