Who dares gamble?

Mugs game.
I'll be spending what ever little part of my pension I have left in a much more useful way.
Over a bar somewhere ;)
Glad to read this. I was just wondering whether I was brave enough to ask if I was the only one on here who thinks gambling is at best an easy way to make bookmakers rich, and at worst... Well, I won't get too preachy here, the day before THE big match.
I was lucky that in my later school years I worked in the summer at a builders' merchants, and a guy there who always had tips for horse-racing was pushing a 100-1 outsider for a big race (Derby, I think). I duly went into a bookies for the only time in my life, and put a pound on. Everyone listened on the radio, and I couldn't understand why they were all cheering when it came in second. 'You did back it each-way?', one of them said, to which I replied 'What does each-way mean?' The combination of being humiliated and losing a pound (most of my earnings that week) was enough to mean I have never had a bet since. As you say, there are much better ways to waste money...

I always chuck a Sky RequestABet in just before the game, always wait to see who is playing.

Quite fancy this one;

Sharp to score, Wednesday 5+ corners, OConnell and Basham to be carded - 100/1

Why anyone would put £1 on a Wednesday win is beyond me.

UTD are a sure thing.

UTB

Who has the required testicular size to place a bet on the game?

We are big favourites. William hill have Wednesday and both teams to score at 10/1. Some may argue they are huge odds against a team that has one win in four.

My bet is Sharp to score first and 3-1 at 55/1.
Just don't put any money on a straight win with your luck FFS! :)

This is the easiest derby to predict I've ever seen.

It's a nailed on draw.

We even have the blueprint for it from January.

Had a few bets to tempt fate and a bit of insurance.

Blades win 3 -2
Reach to Score and Blades win
Norwood to score both halves (100/1)
BTTS Pigs to win
Missed penalty (12/1)

We'll certainly score.
Sharp will probably score.
We'll probably concede.
SYP will do something ridiculous.

I get that there’s a good drink to be had from the bookies if the pigs win to soften the blow etc
but I could never put money on them to win regardless of odds

a JOC / Basham first goal scorer or a sharp hat-trick as a fun bet for me

The odds on this game are ridiculous for a Sheffield derby.
^this

Pigs at 6/1 is a crazy price. I'd happily pay 20 not to lose this game and if we do then 120 softens the blow
The bookies are rich for a reason.

We have fans like myself who think we’ll beat them comfortably, yet some of our fans are calling fans like me Wednesday fans for thinking this even though those that win a lot of money like the bookies have us down as a nailed on win?

Gone 3-0. Always do. Usually lose.

Hopefully this time because we win 6-0

Wednesday on a +1.5 goal handicap at 6/10.
Over 2.5 match goals at 8/11.
Over 2.5 goals & both teams to score at 6/5.
Wednesday at 6/1 (ridiculous odds btw).

We haven't been behind at the Lane since the first game of the season. They haven't kept a clean sheet all season.

Blades 0-1 Pigs.

I don't bet much on football and much prefer horse racing.

But anyone who backs the more esoteric bets - number of goals/cards/corners, first/last goalscorer, that sort of thing - needs to be aware that bookies' profit margins on them are sky high, in the twenty to thirty percent range.

On the other hand, if you bet on the exchanges, the profit margin on the match result market that you'll need to overcome is paper-thin. Betfair Exchange currently has United at 1.54 (54/100), the draw at 4.5 (7/2) and Wednesday at 7.4 (64/10). The overround on that market is 100.67%. In other words, the profit margin is two-thirds of one percent. For every £100.67 staked at those prices, £100 would be paid out to winning backers. This doesn't take commission into account, incidentally.

They're not bookies' odds, of course. They represent the collective view of Betfair's customers but if you believe in the wisdom of crowds, we have about a 65% chance of winning tonight with a 22% chance of a draw and a Wednesday win is around a 13% shot.
