Hopefull young Elliot will benefit from this. Only a month, but hopefully get some league playing time. I really thought he would make a breakthrough and an impact last season, but the pre-season injury seemed to set him back quite a bit.

I would hope that he might get another chance at the Lane.

Trying to see the link between York and Hungary (other than the Kit Kat factory, I'm struggling)

My point was simply that a loan move away from the club can help a young player's career. If Lowton had been deemed ready for first team action here we would never have sent him. Maybe they weren''t sure whether he was good enough. Some loans work; many don't, and players are released.

Think it's finally dawning that our wonderful youngsters are mostly a bit crap. Youth policies don't work. You can't just push players through the ranks to the first team. If you get one or two gems every now and then it's a bonus. We struck gold in the past, but that kind of luck may not happen again for 10 years. You have to build your first team around signings. Unless you wanna be stuck between this league and division four for the next 30 years like Crewe.

That youth team which I saw go to Old Trafford was the best I ever saw at the lane...including the Wagstaffes, etc.
I expected big things from it but you are right, we cannot expect wholesale batches of young players from a category two academy.

Alot of them are not crap, they just lack game time which they never got under Wilson. I am not sure why but we have seemed hesitant to loan out these players for game. It's very hard for these young players to come in and play well when the fans expectations are higher. Most of the moans at games are usually about the youngsters and it's fucking annoying.

How many kids have they produced since then? Round about none.

Wes Brown, Phil Bardsley, Fraizer Campbell, Tom Cleverley, Jonny Evans, Darren Fletcher, Darron Gibson, David Healy, Daniel Nardiello, John O'Shea, Paul Pogba, Gerard Pique, Kieran Richardson, Giuseppe Rossi, Robbie Savage, Ryan Shawcross, Jonathan Spector, Danny Welbeck and David Johnson.

All of the above players that are still active would piss themselves at the prospect of joining us.

I'm not against having a youth system, just the idea that you can use it as a policy to fill the first team with new players is utter lunacy. If we're relying on Ironside,Whitehouse, McFadzean etc then we're right in the shit. The youth system is a lottery. One year you may have 5 or 6 promising players, then you may not have anybody good for 5 years. It's not something you can rely on. Thankfully, it looks like we've ditched that idea now Prince Chubbychops has come on board.

So, none then?

Welbeck and Cleverly play regularly for England, Wes Brown was first choice at Manchester United, as was O'Shea, Pique plays for perhaps the best club side ever assembled. Hardly 'none'.

Provided that the youngsters show promise, then the harder they work, the luckier they will get. Sometimes the difference between success and failure is the work ethic.

Let's be honest if he's not good enough to get in our midfield now then he never will be.

Rubbish. He's 19 and lost the first half of last season - his breakthrough season - to a bad injury. Matthew Lowton didn't make his debut until he was almost 21 and that was at right back - a position far less pivotal to a team than central midfield.

Hopefully Whitehouse can go away, get his head down and try and recapture the form which made him one of the highest rated prospects in the FA Youth Cup squad.

Spot on.

The only way he can develop properly is by playing first team football, and York will give him that chance. I wouldn't be surprised to see him do well there and perhaps be around our first team by the end of this season.

Well we'll see won't we. I just find it odd that we'll give a youngster from another club a go (Coady, Bunn) before we'll try our own. They either aren't good enough or the manager doesn't want to stick them in for whatever reason. If it's the former then move them on or if it's the latter then questions ought to be asked given our policy of putting faith in our own youth system.

For what it's worth I guess I'm generalising here rather than speaking specifically about Whitehouse.

There are countless youngsters who look world-beaters at 16 but never make it into the higher levels of professional football. The important thing, as I was once told by a coach, is the way they deal with a set-back (which can shatter their confidence). Whitehouse had a bad injury which has set him back. Let's see if he can overcome that. I hope he can.

That was my thought when watching Wendy u16s this morning, they beat Blades u16s a few weeks ago. The standard of football doesnt really seem better than Division A of the Junior Sunday League. With the PL now having more control of the academy players it does look like that both Wendy and the Blades will have less outstanding players from the Academy unless they are in Category One Academy. Not fair
