Which striker shall we go for then?

The NOTW reports this morning that Tommy Smith has rejected a move to BDTBL and is holding out for Reading (more like money (Lita No.2)).

So who should we go for?
I think we should still push for Beckford, looks a class act in front of goal, demonstrating this again yesterday.

I'd love to see Beckford at the Lane but there seems to be several obstacles - Sharp's insistence on staying put, Leeds wanting to keep him now they've got the Delph money and we don't even know if Blackwell is interested in him in the first place. Still hoping though!

I hate the idea of buying strikers from the lower league’s and don’t rate Beckford at all big fish in very small pond.

It’s hard to get any striker good enough for this league when we won’t flash the cash.

its a false economy saying we need to be prudent and not go bust, a premier class striker than can get you 20 goals is like a ticket to go to the play off's automatically.

Having championship level strikers means inevitably if we get promotion we will need to sign prem class strikers to stay there, only thing is if were in the prem it will be at an inflated price.

We won’t get any one worth having if we won’t pay any thing. I mean look at out strikers no one really jumps out does it?

what we need is get some one in from abroad its the only way to get any one close to what we need .make them lazy scouts actually go do some work, turn Europe upside down turn the f**ng world upside down but get us a striker that’s on fire and not more average dribble we’ve got now.

The top and bottom is you don’t win the league if you can’t score goals.

We were in the Premiership when we bought Rob Hulse from then Championship Leeds United.

Just because Sharp hasn't worked, doesn't mean it never works :)

Given Blackwell’s comments about a possible couple of loan signings and waiting until Premiership pre-season finishes these lot seem vaguely possible as Premiership squads stand at the moment. This ignores the youngsters with no track record because I can’t see they are what we need. It comes down to a list of the usual suspects and old lags together with one or two interesting possibilities.

Marlon Harewood, Villa ,Looked dreadful last time I saw him – No thanks
Marcus Bent, Brum, Might play up top but rarely scores any goals these days – No thanks
Kevin Phillips, Brum, Would be great but can’t see him moving from the midlands and Birmingham will probably want to keep him for the odd 15 minutes here and there.
Paul Gallagher, Blackburn, Did well at Plymouth last season - possible
Ricardo Vaz Te, Bolton, Rarely features for Bolton, that probably says it all – no thanks
Eddie Johnson, Fulham, Fulham have a surplus of strikers at the moment and he did well at Cardiff last year. Possible
Benjani, Man City, Will probably be on his way from City but if he doesn’t would be great – can’t see him getting a sniff at City this season.
Jonathon Obika, Tottenham, Still very raw but did well at Yeovil last season – maybe a spin-off from the Kyles deal?

Johnson was dreadful at Cardiff wasn't he? He was a cult hero for being a bit of a joke, only one league goal I think.

My mistake, two league goals. But he cancelled that out by scoring an own goal in the same match :D

Hmmm yeah Johnson's goal scoring isn't too clever is it? - Even so I thought he looked dangerous when he came on for them against us at Ninian Park.

Yeah I think he was appreciated for his effort and workrate but his goalscoring fell away a tad!

its good if your only tryng to stay in the league to buy the best from the league below but to get out you buy better.

lets surpose we did get a good striker from the first devision for around 2m. wich seems to be te adverage price for a first division top striker.

even if he pops up with ten to fifteen goals over the season and we went up then we would still need to stenghen again why not just get a 5m striker to start with?

buying from lower divisions just seems a short term fix to me.

Best player I ever saw play for United came from a lower league team.

Does this mean Spurs have got a short term fix with Naughton?

No players can improve.?

:)

Think my way of looking at it differs a little but I know what you’re saying.

I am sure there’s a lot of players who can compete at this level from league 1 and maybe one or two from league 2 but how many will still cut it if we went up ??

Why not just have a little belief and buy a prem class player from aboard who’s looking to play in the prem ,as for Kyle going to spurs they got the best out of his league no doubt but he wont be first choice or first name on the team sheet he'll have to work hard for that and I think he will.

the difference is were looking to improve not strengthen

but its about where you want to finish in the league tell me any of the top six teams from the prem witch i think we are in this league who have bought a striker from the championship to go straight in to the squad

Excluding Owen to man u of course as he never played in the championship.

But where do all these good players start then......are they all at good Premiership teams then move down?? Why are they moving down if they are good enough for up there?

Everyone has to start somewhere.

By your logic we would never have signed TC.....why bother.

:)

Beckford would be a great signing but I cant see us getting him. Obika is a good shout though.

brian deane come from a lower league club and he has been our best striker over the passed 20 years

Good question

I just want to know why we only seem to be buying domestic players ?

Do we not have any scouts aboard any more?

Sure there’s a lot better players willing to come from Europe desperate to ply there trade in the prem and would see us as a step in the right direction.

I’ll just ask you one question is there any striker from league 1 or two you think is significantly better than what we have that could cut it in the prem?

beckford would be worse than sharp

If people really knew the answer to that they would earn a fortune in football.

Too many variables to be sure though.

:)

i dont know where out next port of call is at all now i like the thought of beckford but whether he can do it in the premiership rather than this division is another question if we go up. tommy smith obviously doesnt want to come here so forget him if he doesnt want to play for the club then we dont want him. anyone got any suggestions of any premiership strikers that one would want to come to the lane and two the club at the other end would be prepared to give up.
david nugent, dean sturridge, kevin phillips, ricardo fuller these are possible options but are they any better than what weve got.

Phillips has been my choice since pre-season started, also someone mentioned abroad, there's some good players come from Ireland, may be worth a punt, what is not in dispute is we need another striker, still think we need a creative midfielder as well.

yes i thought thaty myself people keep going on about this other striker we need but i think with our midfield if we can get that bit of class there it would unlock so many doors.

2 reasons Patrick Suffo & Luton Shelton. Personally I find that european players tend to struggle in the Championship, maybe its something to do with having to deal with "Chris Morgan" style defenders

After todays performance for Coventry, a quick £1.5m for Clinton Morrison wouldn't look likle bad business.

Incidentally, it looks like Coventry are going to battle it out with Wednesday for the most empty blue seats in a stadium...

D'Jaffo was one of our scouts at one bit... we seem to be scouting far and wide as far as bringing kids to the academy goes, but they don't seem to progress any further.

I'll continue to bang the drum I did on BU and say Rob Earnshaw. 139 goals from 240 starts, mostly at this level. Only Kevin Phillips can match that sort of record but he's 36 and Earnshaw is only 28. He was only on the bench for Forest yesterday, so he might be available at the right price (£2M)?

Is it true though, that we have to sell Sharp before KB will be allowed to bring in another striker? That seems ridiculous to me, considering we should still have the Smith/McIndoe money available.

I think we had to up the wages offer for Evans, so the cash may have gone that way. Earnshaw would be decent in my view. He's one of those at this level like Kevin Phillips, and Morrison who just scores goals no matter what you do to them. It would make a change from wondering if Evans and Ward can actually score, and Hendo whilst good, has never been prolific has he..?

We should have gone in for him when he went to Forest.

he has been quality for a good few years now.

Have been thinking the same myself...might be hard to find players better than we've already got if we don't look any further than the English leagues...

Wasn't it D'Jaffo that recommended Nade?

Forest have a lot of strikers, so maybe Earnshaw could be available? When I've seen him he's either dreadful or scores.

Has anyone seen a lot of Gillingham's Simeon Jackson? He scored a hat trick in their opener against Swindon, and has a very good goal record. I watched him when they played Aston Villa in the cup last season and he looked quick and dangerous.

Would he be a younger, hungrier version of Leroy Lita, or a new Billy Sharp?
