Well its kind of following a pattern. Play offs then relegation, play offs then...
.

factually incorrect wed finished 8th the season before relegation . and doing it once isnt a pattern
The arguments here aree based on people expecting us to have won all 4 games by 5 goals ,anything less makes our club, to quote one "the entire club is a fucking disgrace"

now we are rebuilding under a new manager and played 4 games , thats 4, some people need to get a grip, Carlisles lost 4 out of 5 by 4 clear goals or more, thats unprofessional , losing at brentford who have only lost twice at their ground in nearly 2 years is hardly hitting rock bottom, more going to form , lets all take a deep breath and use some grey matter, engage our brains before going on one of these ridiculous rants

I don't think it's the results per se that are putting people in a state.

It's the combination of selling the "best player" after 1 game and not looking like scoring or keeping a clean sheet. People were generally optimistic (even if there was no hard evidence they should be so) before a ball was kicked and certainly after Notts County, only for the next games to look very much like the end of last season.
If we'd NOT played like we did first game I think the subsequent games would have been seen as a "work in progress", having seen the NC game though, they've looked dreadful by comparison and that is being put down squarely as a selling issue.

The way I spelt his surname reflected how the club was going from 77 to 81

And you think these are bad times!

Chuff those were dark days. People who moan about Doyle never saw Paul Richardson. People who moan about Porter never saw Douggie Brown/Don Peattie/Jeff Bourne. I could go on, but I'm depressed enough!

weve not looked as fluid , but its a work in progress, to have got brentford away was not what we needed , carlisle or tranmere wed have probably not took a knock in confidence, lots of young inexperienced kids in the side, the word is embrionic , we are still in the lava stage, we might not turn into a beautiful butterfly till october , november

We endured players with less talent than Jedward, todays players are like one direction in comparison , shit but not as shit

You know you're in a bad way when you start talking about degrees of shitness!

Its comparism time. Who are the biggest turds in these two sets of players?

GK: Richardson /Long. I say Richardson

RB: Ryan/McMahon. I say McMahon
CB: MacPhail/Maguire. I say MacPhail
CB: Kenworthy/Collins. I say Collins
LB: Houston/Williams. I say Williams

RM Matthews/Brandy I say Matthews
CM: Trusson/Doyle. I say Doyle
CM: Peters/ McGinn. I say Peters
LM Tibbott/Coady. I say Coady

F Hatton/Taylor. I say Taylor
F Butlin/Murphy. I say Murphy (though that is VERY close).

So we have 7 modern turds to 4 early 80's turds. Oh dear.

I ran this past my dad and he said "Aye, I remember people saying that in 1980".

To be fair that relegation in 1981 was in a freak set of circumstances that could only possibly happen to SUFC - I posted elesewhere that out of 20 defeats, 16 were by 1 goal and we ended up with the equivalent of 54 points under 3 for a win and still went down.

I mentioned that we threw away 6 points (2 for a win then) though missing pens and conceding last minute or injury time equalisers. Had we got those 6 points, we would have finished 10th.

Ahh, but lets take the players of the late 70s/early80s that got us into the brown stuff

GK: D Richardson
RB: Moore
CB: West
CB: MacPhail
LB: Houston
RM: Givens
CM: P Richardson
CM: Peters
LM: Flood
F: Brown
F: Bourne

P. Richardson and West didn't get us into the brown stuff. They were both brought in by Porterfield when we were on our way back.

Also Flood, Brown and Moore were essentially reserve players, so it's not really fair to use them as comparators.

Finally, Givens only gets his bad rep through that missed pen. He actually played well before that. On his debut v Charlton on 14/3/81, he played a blinder scoring one and setting up two others in a 3-2 win against a team that went up at the end of the season.

Well said sir !!!

To be honest when we kicked off against Walsall in that final match of the 1980-1 season, I don't think there were many people in the ground (except perhaps the very small contingent of Walsall supporters) who seriously believed we would get relegated.

I learnt never ever to be optimistic about anything connected with Sheffield United after that match!

I did try and pick players that had played more than a dozen games (Duggie Brown might not qualify!) given that you've included Coady and McGinn after a only a handful between them, I'm allowed! :D

I included Givens because I couldn't think of another right-sided player that played at the time. Neither could you if you put Matthews out there! ;)

Richardson and West might have been brought in after division4 but still played in division 3 so were allowed. And Richardson was spectacularly average, culminating in his two-fingered salute to the kop!

Ah but McGinn and Coady are current first choices, which Flood and Brown never were (Moore, inexplicably, was for a time).

You're right about the right side. I have a vague memory of Tibbott playing there, but thought that can't be correct as he was a left sided player.

Once Porterfield took over in 1981, I don't think anyone would dispute that his D4 championship side and his subsequent sides were better than the current lot, so I am ruling anyone who debuted after August 1981 as outside this game :-).

In my book the only serious contenders to this lot for the title "of biggest load of steaming turds ever to play at BL" is the side that went from the top of D3 in Jan 1980 to relegation to D4 in May 1981. The players who played in that time were:

GK
Richardson
Conroy
Poole

D
Kenworthy
Garner
Cutbush
MacPhail
Moore
Casey
Ryan
Houston

MF

Speight
Keeley
Matthews
Jones
de Goey
Charles
Trusson
Peters
Brazil

F
Flood
Brown
Butlin
Verde
Bourne
Busby
Wiggan
Steane
Hatton
Neville
Givens

Have another go then with that lot:

GK. Richardson - Long........Richardson

RB. Moore - McMahon........Moore

LB. Houston - Williams........Mmmmmm!

CB. Kenworthy - Maguire..........Mmmmmm!

CB. MacPhail - Collins.......MacPhail

RM. Charles - Brandy........Charles

CM. Matthews - McGinn......Matthews

CM. Peters - Doyle.............Mmmmmmm

LM. Keeley - Coady...........Keeley

F. Neville - Murphy............Murphy

F. Bourne - Taylor.............Mmmmmm

Bit different with a few difficult to call. Don't you think?

There are some spectacularly piss poor players to compare against (I'm presuming people are talking about Tony Moores when they put Tony Moore) BUT I don't think they ever took the field together as a team.

A fairer comparison would be to pick a genuine team and stick it down and do a like for like against that.

To be sure we have had an array of talentless twats in our time. Who would have thought we would be following the "how to slip through the divisions" blueprint we copyrighted so closely 2 generations on? Or that there are so many people who can't see it happening? It really is deja vu.

:D

Average division 3 striker that did score now and again. Still floating around the Exeter area, doesn't have many fond memories of BDTBL!

He didn't score much. He played from Oct 80 to April 1982 and managed 6 goals (though to be fair he played mainly on the wing in 81-82). HE makes Porter look prolific...

Thats what I tried to do. How about the team that started 80-81 v the team that started this season

Richardson Long

Cutbush Westlake
MacPhail Maguire
Kenworthy Collins
Houston Williams

Tibbott McDonald
Trusson Doyle
Peters McGinn
Jones Brandy

Butlin Porter
Hatton Murphy
