It's usually at away fans who've been taking the piss. But more often now it's players directing it at their own fans after they've been slagged off. I noticed Didzy did it in front of the Kop after scoring last year after he'd been criticised. Forget the game. Baldock did it today to the South Stand after his superb strike.

1. Players obviously pick up on criticism. I think they either read the boards or more likely what's been said is passed onto them ie someone tells them 'you got a right slagging on the forums'.

2. Fans are entitled to criticise poor play. We are permanent, they are often temporary with a few exceptions like Billy. But still they're getting paid to represent the shirt, we invest money, time, emotion, passion, time so fans deserve some leeway.

3. But so do players. Some of the flak is way over the top. I guess the answer is players should rise above it, be less sensitive and fans should be more tolerant. Players saying 'you what' to their own fans is divisive.

Agree with all 3 points.

Re Baldock, I would suggest his temperament affects what he delivers on the pitch. Some find it endearing, Furious George etc, but for me he's a headless chicken too often.

Fabulous goal today and deserves all the plaudits for that moment, but otherwise average at best for the other 92 minutes.

What a load of bollocks.

Is this the sum total of the counter-argument?

He did well against WBA, was poor at Huddersfield, was poor against Hull and should've been sent off, and no better than average today but scored a great goal.

I'm not giving him a free pass because he has some pace and is good at looking busy. We're a better side when he's not in it. Feel free to challenge any of these points.

He's relevant to this thread because of the way he celebrated the goal.

You weren't watching the same game as me then. Absolute nonsense.

(You did notice he went off injured after 68 minutes though didn't you champ?)

Yes I hold my hands up on that one.

The substitution didn't affect his contribution, but at least it made sure we finished with 11 on the pitch.

I've been reminded he went off after 68 so didn't play the 92 mins I suggested.

Pedantry aside, I've no issue with an opinion that challenges my own. What are the positives I'm being blind to?

Goode did a good job at RWB. I thought Bash would replace Baldock there. But Ebenezer was attacking up the right wing. Bogle is the answer anyway and I like Baldock.

A bit harsh on GB. However, I wish he would fire his cross in first time. He nearly always cuts back and then he doesn't get a cross in.

Fantastic goal today, but I still prefer Baldock.

If they can be criticised then they've every right to respond to the criticism in a positive way. Which is exactly what he's done.
Well done George
A valid point, but perhaps more relevant to a striker getting stick for not scoring than a defender? Even then, isn't scoring the thing that shuts critics up, rather than the ear cupping?

A great goal today and I'll never question his work rate or commitment but, for me, putting one in the top bin doesn't shush anyone with respect to repeated poor decision making, regularly passing and throwing in backwards unnecessarily, poor crossing and finishing (today's goal notwithstanding) and regular deliberate fouls to recover a situation (I thought that's what his pace was for?)

JLT has been pelted this season, and made mistakes so criticism is justified but some of the abuse has gone too far. He's since kept his game simple, been consistent and solid. He celebrated with the Kop and teammates when he scored.

I've criticised his decision making, delivery and final product in the past, but he can run up the kop steps and call me an arsehole if he scores goals like that. It's not like he's going to make a great forward pass or a cross and cup his ear so fair game as far as I'm concerned.

Looked to me like he only did it while staring directly at a specific part of the south stand, was someone in H, G or F block giving him excessive stick today?

Personally I hate players cocking the ear to opposition fans, whether that be some twat playing for Norwich or Billy Sharp.

Yes I noticed that it was specific. Was Bogle sat there?

Listen to Baldocks post match interview from 1min 40 seconds and also 2min 50 seconds according to that I dont think the points in the OP are valid, he just wanted the fans to shout his name. Why do you think it has to be a negative when its in relation to home fans ? Just get a Baldock song going.
