When did managers and players start going over to the fans after the final whistle?

I bet he wasn't doing that at the back end of his career as he played until he was about 97, probably struggled to cross the penalty area!

John Burridge always applauded the Kop after every home game. If we had lost the match he would gesture to the fans to keep their chins up. If we won the match, he would applaud the fans and then do a back flip which brought loud cheers from the crowd.

As for managers, Bassett would applaud all sides of the ground apart from the away end only at the end of the season. Warnock did after some matches especially after beating Wendy.

I remember our fans being quite annoyed when Budgie did that to the Gallogate End after Newcastle beat us 2-0 circa November 1989.

If i was running a modern day football club the first thing id do would be to stop this silly practice of going over to applaud fans altogether apart from last home and away games of the season . Giving 100% and trying to entertain is how to thank the supporters for coming . A quick clap before going down the tunnel is enough.
