Yes I was the one doing the drivers collection when coming back from away matches between 1971 and 1974. The usual driver was called Colin. Big Jim passed away in January, Nip passed away about 8 years ago. Dont know who is Nev? Dicky is Steve Dixon?

Should have gone the way I went. Straight run with no hold ups whatsoever, although I did set off at about 2pm.

A bit confused by the inclusion of the word "knowingly" in the title of the thread? This suggests we may have arrived late "unknowingly" perhaps? I don't think that's very common but I did arrive "knowingly" late when I travelled by train (football special) to Portsmouth for the first game of the season sometime back in the 1980's.

We got there about 5 minutes before half/time. We were frog-marched to the ground and frog-marched back to the station afterwards. We lost 4-1 (I think). Alan Biley scored a hat-trick for them if I recall?

There were no seats in the return journey and I stood up for 4.5 hours on the way back.

A super day out! 9 hours of travel by train for 50 minutes of dreadful football.

(That's what being a Blade is all about eh?).

Invited a mate of mine (Stoke fan) along to watch Blades V Villa. Got in about ten minutes into the match and we were 1-0 down already.

I hate being late for anything and it had put me in a bit of a bad mood. Not helped by sitting through a turgid display resulting in a second Villa goal some minutes before full time.

Post match beers helped. As ever.

I am heading to Scotland this afternoon for work and due to some really poor planning on my part fly back to East Mids, landing at 8.00pm on Wednesday.

I had resigned myself to missing the match, but decided yesterday I can't miss this in case results do go our way and we do get promoted. I bought a ticket this morning and will probably get there about 9.15. I have persuaded a colleague to drive me back from East Mids and he is going to drop me at the ground to save parking time, I will meet my daughters who will drive down from home in East Yorks.

I am feeling the Greenwich Blade pain of late arrival here, but it is actually more about the possible celebrations (after 6 years of pain) than the game itself.

So how late have you ever knowingly planned to arrive at a match?

September 1973. Home to Arsenal for a night match. I'd mistakenly booked a driving lesson that evening. Anyway managed to get dropped off corner of Cherry Street and Shoreham Street. Got in late but we were already 3-0 up. Still managed to see the iconic moment of TC sitting on the ball.

Pre season friendly night match against Exeter. Had to work late, drove to Exeter and got in at half time. Can't recall too much about the game. Think Asaba missed a penalty.

Off topic I know but thanks SB for that information. That was my first Blades match and for the life of me I couldn't remember the exact date or who scored the second. The knowledge on here is one reason I joined this forum.

v West Ham on 29th Feb 1972? Billy Dearden hat-trick. My headmaster kindly allowed me the afternoon off school. My dad was working so his workmate took me to the match

Chester away 1982 ? (Silent), 4th division, loads of Blades mistimed the trains and ended up arriving in Chester well into match, we all ran through the town. At the ground I spoke to somebody who opened a door and let me into their main stand for free, didn't even need to ask. Drew 1-1

Thanks 1889, the footballing gods were watching on, it truly is our season. In the words of James Cordon i was Mr Greenlight".

The flight left on time and thanks to a tail wind landed 10 minutes early at 19.45. As soon as my phone was off flight mode i was checking the shoutbox. Only to see "get in, 1 each". I quickly dived into the BBC live scores only to see that was the Oxford equaliser against Fleetwood and our kick off was delayed.

A quick jog to the car and we sped up the M1 which was unbelievably quiet. Off down the parkway and through a sea of green traffic lights. My colleague dropped me at the south stand car park in the middle of half time.

Massive shout out to a certain M Rooker who had arranged for me to get into the ground as the turnstyles shut at HT.

I relaxed into my seat as the players came out and thoroughly enjoyed what followed!
