Normally one to be positive but I can't help but feel dismayed by our transfer activity this summer.

Bromby - I was all for his signing in January, Ugo knackered himself, Walker was yet to break through so I saw it as a sensible move. But why, if Blackwell is willing to sell him did we bother signing him a few weeks ago? What would happen if Leeds or somebody of a similiar stature (MK Dons) came in for France, Little(where he?) or Reid in a similiar deal? I can't hand on heart say that we'd turn it down. We seem like some investment company now. I agreed with selling Beattie, I could even understand Naughton & Walker going but now I'm not so sure.

It isn't the fact we're losing Leigh Bromby as a player so much, it's just the strange nature way things are happening, such as we let Wednesday take France on trial and just nip in there when it turns out they can't offer him a deal. Surely if we really wanted him he'd have been on the radar months before he signed and we'd have got him then?

Very odd and confusing at the moment.

We should wait and see what comes out tomorrow on this before making any real judgement. His sale in itself weakens us, but if it's announced alongside, say, the signing of Fortune then I don't think it will be too much of a problem. By the sounds of it, we signed him for peanuts off a Watford side desperate to get rid of people of their wage bill, so I doubt we'll have suffered financially from this move.

I'm going to guess that his original signing was purely for insurance purposes, in the sense that Blackwell felt he may as well bring him in just incase he couldn't bring in any better cover. That said, I'm fairly sure that he also said "he should never have been sold" when he signed this summer. So there is still an element of the bizarre with his sale.

Yep Loughboro. I almost put that in my original post. He said that when we played Watford at the lane last year he told him personally he should have never gone. If I was a player I'd be confused by the mixed signals Blackwell gives players. Is it just us or do I only notice it cos I don't take much notice of other managers?

For instance when we played Barnsley away, Sharpy scored the winner and Blackwell said "People questioned United sigining him for 2 million, i'd have paid 4' Now he can't wait to get him out. It makes it even worse when you think that Blackwell was reserve team manager when Sharp was playing so surely he'd seen a lot of him already? Is it just an innocent confidence booster? In the build up to the same game he was asked about the threat of Brian Howard (then playing for Barnsley) he said he isn't bothered as he has Michael Tonge!

Even his treatment of Cotterill seems a bit odd. I've never known a manager sign someone for 2 million but never really seem interested in him!

I think we have too many players which Blackwell doesn't want or rate but the problem is he signed a lot of them and he has no idea how he's going to accomdate them.

re sharp. i have been told that sharp doesn't like blackwell and blackwell doesn't like sharp. apparently blackwell likes to pick on the younger kids in the squad that aren't established.

Whether he picks on the younger players or not this is an important window .Blackwell needs to get his picks right ,there is not alot of difference between the top clubs just abit of quality is enough to swing the balance between a draw and three points.

You got a source for that comment or is it just bullshit?

Yes, Stafford has good sources. He coached my lad last season (and my lad enjoyed his coaching too) at Greenhill. I do not think it is a good idea for me to reveal in here why I know he has good sources

As long as none of the first XI get injured, we're fine with the squad we have...

It's not very clear at the moment, is it?

I've never known a transfer window so quiet...not even the sniff of a rumour. Does this mean we aren't trying to sign anyone? Well, that's the general feeling...but we've a very thin squad. It's a risky strategy.

It seems to me we've pared the squad down to the bare bones - but we have the basis of a strong team. I think this is the squad that KB thinks will get us up there again this season.

We'll probably get one or two in on loan as cover for emergencies but I can't see us making any 'quality' signings. The budget is getting tighter, remember.

I hope I'm wrong but I just can't see us making the quality signings we're all looking for.

Go on Blackie, prove me wrong.

Fortune isn't coming, Blackie turned him down :(
woulda liked to see him at BDTBL

The other point to remember is that we do not play for another two weeks so at the moment it doesn't matter that we have no cover. The window shuts on Tuesday and we may or may not have signed players by then, but the loan window opens a week or so after. It is often said that many managers will keep hold of players until they see what they are left with (does that make sense?) once the window is closed there may be a few options open to us that are not available now.

Do we need to splash out on a midfielder if he sees Williamson is the answer? If not then maybe a two or three month loan may be the best option. Also, it may be that any loans that do come in could be made permanent during the next window.

If in two weeks we have not seen any movement in then I will get very worried, especially if there are more moves out especially Killa.

My sources tell me Billy will join Notts County before the deadline...

Seems strange then that he was at the Lane yesterday. Hewalked round with Geary and Hendrie before kick off in front of the Brammall Lane end and was in a club tracksuit.

HP or Heinz :)

Yes we have two weeks including the start of the loan window but we could be looking for 1 or 2 strikers, 1 midfielder, 2 poss 3 defenders and maybe a keeper. We are already playing with 3 loan signings (Walker,Treacy and Bunn) and I am sure the rules are that you can only have 5 loan signings in a match day squad therefore we could do with owning some!!

I think the key thing here will not be what happens tomorrow but what happens when the loan window opens up again.

I'm not bothered either way if we keep Leigh Bromby or not, he can do a reasonable job when called upon but i don't really regard him as a first teamer.

What i will say is that he is a sound bloke, last year when Watford came to the Lane it was the same day as my stag night, and i bumped in to the Watford side at Owlerton dog track and ended up having half an hour chatting away to him and he is one of football's good guys and is a credit to himself and to the sides he represents.

Exactly, you have to be very, very lucky to get no injuries, suspensions throughout the season Perhaps Reading and Burnley were the exemptions. But with Donkey Hendersons track record for both injuries and suspensions we need cover for at least half a season!

This of course could all be a cunning plan on behalf of Blackwell and he has 5 'Marque' signings ready to be unvieled to the shock of the worlds media.
I can just see it now, Blackwell stood smiling, with his arm over the shoulder of Cannavaro. :D

Blackwells five Marque signings have all the hallmarks of................... Spring, Craig Beattie, Howard, Henderson and France - Throw Bromby in for a BOGOF
Thats the measure of the man - he does not have a clue!

I thought he was injured after the Bury friendly, missed the last friendly and was still injured at the time Blackie was due to make a decision on him. I'm sure I heard last week that he was still training with us, getting fit and then KB would make a decision. I'm guessing that Bromby's departure means he's likely to sign.

I read that Blackwell had not signed him but was allowing him to stay on and do physio with the club to heal his injury and he was paying his own bills.

To be fair every manager signs duffers (although I don't class Henderson as one and Howard has shown flashes of being decent) but you could quite easy make a list of Bunn, Treacy, Evans, Ward & Cotterill who at the moment seem to be fans favourites.

spring and beattie were loan signings so didn't cost us anything. i think blackwell has done ok with the majority of his transactions. But his apparent lack of man management skills worries me.
