Cannon - cut our losses

Shame you don't have any critical thinking skills.
That’s a sweeping judgement on somebody you’ve never met… let’s stick to what we’re watching on the pitch shall we?
You are prepared to read somebody else’s views and take them at face value … but I think most of us who have watched Cannon since he arrived at the club are prepared to make our own judgement based on what we’ve seen … and that includes him playing up top, wide and just in behind.
As I say … I trust my eyes and the comparison I can make with many Blades forwards over many years. So far he’s showed absolutely nothing to suggest he’s worth persevering with. I would love to be wrong and for him to suddenly flourish into a fantastic asset for us. Can we really wait and hope for that…. and if so… for how long?

There is no point in playing Cannon unless he’s in the poacher role - playing with a striking partner. Same as Sharp. Sharp would have looked crap on the wing.
I don’t see that either though tbh, it’s not like he makes darting runs that no one sees. Or tries to bog line, or tries to follow up someone’s shot in case the keeper parries it. He’s inert.

Inert. Great description. From where we were watching some of the more polite descriptions were, “always on his heels” “not anticipating”, “running away and hiding”. Although one charitable soul behind me said “everyone makes mistakes” after the ball cannoned off cannon for the third time. I look forward to the tactical genius and innovator that is Reuben Sellusdowntheriver playing him in midfield a la Brewster.

Preston - they loved him.
Leicester - they wanted him to stay and were impressed with him even though he was under used.
Stoke - they were gutted when we took him.

So yeah, there is a deffo a very good player in Tom Cannon, we need to find a way of getting that fine tuned for us.
Not my random thoughts/opinions, just from what other clubs fans said on Roy's view after we signed him.
Not all Stoke fans were gutted. A few quotes below

Well my two penneth on Cannon is that his his stats are better than he is a footballer. Not great in the air, medium paced and not really suited as a single striker up top on his own. Can finish. Hard to say what will happen. No way a Prem forward.”

“Cannon was better than we’ve had up front for a while, but compared to whom over the last 5/6 years and he was certainly not The Messiah.”

“Cannon was a decent poacher, but hardly irreplaceable.
The fee being touted seems very generous given his wider contribution to games.”

“He’s been massively underwhelming as our big marquee signing.”
Cannon is a massively limited player and if we go about it right the team will score more goals with a better player in there.
He doesn’t do anything well and that’s been a big part of the issue with us. He doesn’t improve the team.”

“he’s not that good.”

“Lots pf promise, not much product.”

“He has scored five goals in 20 odd games.
Adds very little to the forward line, he is unable to link with other forwards, he is not an intelligent footballer.
Very poor in the air.

I do think Cannons record flatters him a lot.
Ignoring his game Vs Portsmouth in the Championship he’s only scored from open play in 3 more games.”

Try and swap him for Manhoef at Stoke

Or loan him somewhere with an obligation to buy for over 5m upon promotion

Even loan him to L1 and hope he knocks in enough goals to tempt the loan club into spending big on him if promoted

Anything is better than keeping him here. It'll be like Wilder desperately trying to salvage Brewster, minus the odd flash of quality
I doubt he’d agree to go to league one.

No idea if he cost 10m or 4m but at this point, swapping him for the Korean lad, not literally but in terms of outgoing and incoming cash, would improve the squad.

It’s simply not happening for him here.

When we had him, the kindest thing you could say was that he divided opinion. He scored a few so inevitably attained a certain level of popularity, but many of us could see his overall contribution was questionable to say the least.

Given the fact that we got (slightly) better after he left last season, and that we've started so strongly this season, I'd say about 80% would be against having him back now.

yes, He looked lost wearing the No. 7 Shirt. Ironically, Brewster had that shirt last season we had to get shut, and I think the same about Cannon.
How dare they give the legendary number seven shirt worn with distinction by The Legendary Alan Woodward to them
I bet Woody is turning in his grave. Bless Him.

I wonder if Selles has been instructed to produce a style of play, but is trying to fit players into a style of play that is alien to them.

The club must have known what style of play suits Cannon. It does seem in his time here he hasn’t been played to his strengths or he was a 5 minute wonder. If he moves on and starts scoring goals then questions must be asked.

If we want to loan him out to a team he could stand out and impress then i suggest we give Worksop a call to see if they’ll have him

Actually saying that, we seem to have pulled the wool over QPR’s eyes lets see if they will take him before RND gets a game..

Needs a few Saturday night shifts at Maggie Mays to humble him. I’m sure it can be arranged. If not, why not?

still think stoke might be back in for him on loan maybe thats the plan with ings coming in to replace him

I think many of us said it before we even kicked a ball this season, this manager isn’t for us and for the style he wants to play he needed a new set of players. I’m hoping that our owners are already and carefully looking at other candidates because again as stated back in July by many Selles will be lucky if he’s still here by November and that means we’ll have wasted a season and also a lot of money.
