Best game for us by a country mile.
Looked like a proper footballer at last. He took his goal really well
UTB

You can tell he's had a good game because nobody on here has mentioned his name, the spineless shits.

Looks far more dangerous around the box and is working a lot harder of late. He seemed to enjoy working off Marcus Bent in the first half so hopefully its a partnership that could blossom.

Ched showed great strength and determination to score. I cant fault him at the minute. He's started to do what he's being paid for.

What impressed me was his strength, the best example being the goal.

His decision making still isn't great, but his workrate and confidence make him a different proposition to the lumbering doofus we've watched in the past. We may yet get a decent return from him. :)

Yeah, he'll get 5 in the next three games and be sold off on deadline day.

Oh wait.. what? I didn't realise it was so late in the month. How fast the days go by.

Genuinely don't think his performance was that much different to anything that went before. When he doesn't score he's a useless waste of money, when he does, he's the next billy sharp. He's a good player and always has been.

People judge him according to his cost - not something he had control over.

There is a footballer in there, though that was hard to detect last season, and he's steadily emerging this term. Not sure he'll ever justify his cost, but if he keeps us up that'll more than do for me. :)

He played better than he normally does, scored a good goal and generally we still didn't look like we had much of a cutting edge.
They would sell him in a flash if they could but it would appear no-one's that interested in the £3m man.

It looks like Mickey Adams has been able to wake him up before he takes the field, seemingly overcoming my biggest criticism of not being alert enough. The last few matches have seen an enormous improvent inhis concentration. Good luck to him, long may his improvement remain. I hope that MA can do the same to one or two others now.

Yeah I heard on Radio Sheffield that he had had a great game, they must have seen a different game to me. He played ok, even better than ok, but I wouldn't class his performance as great, it was possibly a 7/10.

I have to admit the type of striker Evans is doesn't really appeal to me. He doesn't lead the line very well, no pace, no agression, no skill or trickery; for my money he has no attributes to stretch a defence. If we're saying Bent is leading the line, then the second striker should be playing on the shoulder of the defence, looking to get in behind Benty, Evans aint got the pace to do that. Like Britton I hope Adams cuts his losses and gets shut; put Bogdanovic, Ward or Yeates in alongside Bent.

I'm glad nobody's interested in him. Looked excellent yesterday and had his best game to date.

His goals tally keeps on steadily creeping up.

Oh and looks like he responds well to Micky, just goes to show that if you play him, his confidence builds

20 goals by the end of the season anyone?

I would be astonished if he has 20 goals by the end of the season, unless you mean over the two seasons.
Noticeable for me that he did his disappearing act in general play after Bent went off.
Liked the look of Bent yesterday. Still has a bit of pace and can hopefully do a bit of a Camara for us.

I think he'll probably end up on 13-15 by the end of the season, though that is heavily dependent on us getting a decent CM in.

Now that would be a reasonable haul for a 22 year old striker.

ROFL. Where are those town hall steps again?

He did well yesterday. Not a masterclass as some are suggesting, but more of the same would see us OK. One reason I'll stuggle to get excited is that even at the far right of opinion, it's surely agreed that he's nothing like a £20K per week striker, so I can't see us extending his contract either way. But then again, it's all about avoiding relegation this season.

That's areal tricky one.

Say he hits 15 goals this term. His contract will be up for negotiation at the end of the season, and he'll more than likely want an improved deal.

Do you a) Give it to him

or b) Give him the same or less money, which he'll likely reject, and then risk him having a storming 20+ season and refusing a new deal when it's offered, and going for free at the end of the season.

That would be the disappearing act where he scored the equaliser?

Yup, his general impact fell away when Bent went off.
And any notion that we somehow forget he cost £3m and is on huge wages doesn't cut any ice.
I hope he continues to improve but he has been a massive burden for a club carrying huge debt.

You're not kidding?
The club would offload in a flash if they could and he won't be offered a new contract on anything like his current terms.

This thread was about how well he played on Saturday, not how much of a burden he is on our wage bill... can we just stick to the topic and not go onto things he has no control over. Hopefully Benty will be a good influence on him.

I'm afraid a club £50m plus in debt does not have the luxury of avoiding the cost/value of any player.
Ched Evans, like every other player, does not exist in a vacuum where his relative value is somehow irrelevant.
£5m has gone out of the club on him - more than entire season's take at the gate.
You can be sure McCabe will be acutely aware of Chedwyn's return on the club's outlay.

I thought he played a decent game, maybe his best for us. He wasn't excellent by any means but he looked like a decent Championship striker. The difference, I believe, was playing alongside Bent. He's spent far too much time this season looking way out of his depth as a "lone striker". With a partner that can do the stuff he isn't good at then he will be fine.
Just need to get Bent fit for a full 90!

Maybe Alan Cork deserves some of the credit too.

Ever since Ched signed for us, he's worked on scraps. He's either been asked to play the one up front role (which he's not suited to or strong enough for) or has had ineffective strike partners to feed off. In Bent he's got a proper player who's strong, clever and knows his role backed up my a manager that will play them to their stengths. In all honesty Ched hasn't really had much service at all during his time with us (much like Sharp) and doesn't really miss many chances. Adams is a 4-4-2 man and Bent and Ched will form a great partnership given the service from midfield (and a solid back 4).
Onwards and upwards.

Agree 100%. Ched needs an experienced pro next to him to bring him on. Bent could prove to be the right option as Ched is better suited to play as part of a two man attack. He is not experienced enough or confident enough to play a lone role (not sure he has the grey matter either) but I expect he will be far more effective in a 4-4-2 with a good level of supply.

Suspect you are spot on there Broomers. Corky has a wealth of knowledge in this area and is going to be a key figure on how well this aspect of our game improves. Having the worst attack in the division has been a result of the tactics employed and the negative formations deployed. At our level a team cannot score goals if it only creates one or two chances per game and spends most of the time trying to contain the opposition in it's own half rather than playing the game in the oppositions half.

I thought he was excellent, if it wasn't for a couple of good saves and a bit of luck with the volley that went wide, he'd have netted a hat trick. He and Bent complimented each other very well up top, and could be very useful for us in the coming months!

8 league goals in a total of 24 games (19 starts and 5 sub).

This has been in an absolutely awful season for us, we've hardly had a decent ball into him all season, Ched's been in and out of the team, last season he never looked match fit, rarely finished a game in 2 seasons, never had a consistent run and of course most of the time he's been stuck up front on his own. Now things are starting to change for him.

He's started every minute of every game under Micky.

He's begining to stick to his central role (most of the time)

He's got a strike partner in Bent and they looked good together.

He's also the penalty taker.

I don't want to remind the disbelievers, but I've been saying that he'll come good for a while now.

So 20 goals this season is not so daft if we continue to play in the same way we did on Saturday.

My only criticism of Ched was after we went 1-2 down, he kept getting dragged out wide to try and get the ball, instead of being patient and sticking in the box, he went hunting for the ball when we really needed him in the box

He'll find it hard to get to 20 goals the way we are going, but as Swiss rightly points out....the lad is averaging 1 in 3 this season which is a very good haul in a struggling side. Most centre forwards would be very proud to finish with a 1 in 3 average at the end of their career and its often used as a measure of a decent forward.

If he can double that tally to 15/16 by the end of the season that would be a remarkable effort in this team IMO.

It's been well documented already that the only reason Ward took the penalty against Villa was because he started out with them (though in my opinion that was highly unprofessional of them both).

If hendo comes back into the side this season i doubt he'll be taking penalties if Evans is on the same pitch.

Why change your penalty taker unless he's missing the kicks?

Chedwyn's been blessed with the big club syndrome, the one whereby fans think he has more ability than he really has because of where he came from.
If we'd spent £3m on a player from Barnet with the same scoring record and level of performance the reaction would have been completely different.
It's good he's decided to try a bit harder and is playing a bit better.
But pound-for-pound, still not remotely near worth the outlay.
