What makes us different to the pigs?

One of my best mates is a pig and he's fine, I can have a conversation with him about football without any bias or cheap digs. However, he is an exception to the rule. I'd say about 40% of my mates are pigs. When we'd lose a derby, you wouldn't hear the end of it from piggy mates, all quite pointless really and unnecessary. However, when we'd win a derby or get one over on them in any way, you never used to hear a peep out of the Blades.

So all in all, I think the main thing is we have more class generally. We tend to have more respect for the people around us and this extends to interactions with other fans (barring the odd 'they're a pub team' jibe'). No-one likes big-headed, arrogant people and to hear other clubs describe the pigs in this way must say something about them. I've never heard anyone describe us as arrogant or big-headed.

There are many differences between us and them and this makes other people (usually pundits or other fans) calling us 'Sheffield' even more disrespectful. The only way we are anything like them is that we play in the same city and that is it.

For me,my Dad was a Blade and took me to the Lane...if he had supported the Darkside,I would have almost certainly ended up the same..I also think that some people get to pick their team, and the 60's was a time they seemed to attract the undecided,or the Glory seekers with them having what was often described as the best League ground in the country after being used for World Cup games, and add to that an FA Cup Final appearance...so a lot of people who never went to Football or just wanted to be associated with a bit of success would say they were Wendy fans as opposed to United who still had a 3 sided ground..a bit like the Man U/Premier team syndrome you see with kids nowadays,or when a team get's a new ground and attendances rocket up...In the '70's it swung the other way as United had by far the better team, and Wendy's crowds were down to 7/8 k at times around '74.
I definately think they are more arrogant...they really think they are a massive club.I agree that the ones who don't go are the worst..my Brother in law being one..I think he thinks they get 30k every week, and have the best ground to hear him talk, but he's never set foot inside the Sty...Ofcourse I put him right on a few things, but he's brainwashed and deluded when it comes to Wendy,as are a lot of them.
Blades for me are in general more realistic, more original, more volatile, and more loyal in terms of sticking by our team when we're crap...I doubt they'd be getting crowds of 20k in their 5th season in League One.

Same at my school, but have to say the chance of an afternoon off and the chance to see Pele was too good to miss even if it was at Hillsborough. It was a weird atmosphere, virtually no singing, and you could heard the players voices really clear. Glad I went and could add Pele's name to the list of great players I've seen.
I was there too. My headmaster allowed me the afternoon off school to attend the match on 23rd February 1972. My dad couldnt make it as he was at work so two of his workmates took me there. I was disappointed with Pele's display. I found out years later that before the game Pele argued with the Santos directors wanting an appearance fee insisting that the crowd had come to see him play rather than the team. Santos directors rejected his demands

yeah, I thought it was later than 1969, cos I remember it was after I'd started going regularly to the Lane, round about 71. Went with some kids from school, a mix of Blades and Wendies and we all went on the kop, only time I've ever done that! It was a disappointing display from Pele as I recall as well.

The following Tuesday, my headmaster again allowed me the afternoon off school to watch us Hammer West Ham 3-0. Billy Dearden hat-trick. My dad's friend (Lennie Kenning) took me to the match. Lennie was a big Blade who played a lot of local football. Not heard from him for years. Anyone know him?

I was at that game, also on the Kop...yeah Pele was a bit disappointing from what I remember.I think they came a few years earlier and he scored from a penalty..I think it was the one when he ran upto the ball and stopped ...the keeper dived, and he slotted it in the other side from what I've been told.

Yes he scored a penalty like that in the 1962 friendly according to my dad who was there

When I were a lad in the sixties there was no segregation , and me and my mates alternated visiting both grounds, got on fine .We used to stand together as fans on their kop on derby days and remember being at the side of a group of the blue man group as Birchenall scored 2 in a 2-0 win and discussing how wed outplayed them on the walk up under the arches to catch a circular home.
The seventies saw the introduction of segregation, and not being able to converse with us reasonable blades fans has let the owls fans become isolated and unfortunately they became completely deluded and started getting arrogant reaching a peak after being in our shadow for a while beating us 4-0 on boxing day sent them into a frenzy of superiority which they still cling too , in fact they must be the only club in football that still sing songs about a 3rd tier win over 36 years ago, which indicates how desperate they are for validation .

The majority of Blades and pigs are from and live in, the same city / county. We share the same workplaces, go to the same shops and parks, drink in the same places and most of us have friends and / or family on the other side. Some of them are actually alright - I'd go as far as to say that despite their failings, some are top lads / lasses.

Having followed the blades for years, home and away, I see my fair share of nob heads who also follow the blades, sometimes I'm ashamed that we 'support' the same club.

Despite all this, there is definitely something that sets us apart from them. You can very often spot them before they declare or display their allegiance when you first come across them. I would say that I'm seldom wrong when judging someone as blade or pig. I'm lucky in that the majority of my family are blades. You hear some horror stories from blades whose entire rest of the family are pigs.

So what is it? Apart from a geographical choice of who to follow, there is definitely something different about them. Is it something that has happened over the 80's when they were generally above us? Is it because of their rumbelows cup win, is is it something genetic or is it something that is grown over time?

Those horror stories are true : the rest of my whole family are all wendies! So how did I become a blade?....
Back in the 60's, my mum and dad went to wendy games with my grandad, however they also went to a fair number of games at the Lane too and I'm told this was quite the norm to go to both. Their allegiance though was with the wendies. In 1970, they got relegated from 1st div and my dad apparently decided he was never going to another game because of how awful they had got. I was born in 1971 and until 1979, didn't know my parents even followed football. The first time I knew about it was boxing day 1979 when he was jumping round the house! In January 1980, a friend of my parents asked if they could take me to see the Blades, I went and that was it, I was a Blade. I actually went to Hillsborough a few times with my grandad but it just wasn't the same feeling when they scored or won, I didn't care one way or the other.

My dad actually went back to see wendies in 1984 but he's only been to a few games since, in fact he's probably been to more blades games with me! I think for these reasons, I've never understood the hatred, I'd rather see us both in the top division with us finishing top and them second and as long as we beat them, I wish them well - I don't understand the wish to see them go out of existence, where's the fun in that?

What I could never tolerate and we had a kid at school who did this (I hated him for it), was those who changed allegiance according to who was doing better at the time - in my opinion they should have their testicles removed with a blunt instrument.

The biggest difference between us and them is their inability to accept facts and reality. One was going on about their attendances since returning to the championship averaging over 22,000. When I said to him that was quite decent although we had averaged over 25,000 in 3 of our last 4 championship seasons he point blank refused to believe it. They bang on about being more successful and laugh at our play off failures, What they fail to grasp is that in their 15 years and counting since they were relegated from the premiership they have never got remotely close to even challenge for the playoffs but that makes them more successful than a team who have got to 2 finals. They elevate their league cup win to demonstrate what a big club they are when in fact it puts them on a par for success as those giants of football Oxford and Luton. European glory amounts to beating a bunch of butchers, bakers and candlestick makers from Luxumburg.

Basically we accept who we are and don't bother what others think about us whilst they believe they are something they are not and desperately crave attention.

Basically ..... the majority of Blades are realistic, bordering on pessimistic.

The majority of the scum are arrogant, simpleton twats who think that they have a divine right to be at the top of the Premiership and winning the Champions League.

Simples .....
UTB & FTP

I'm the most optimistic person I know.

So pleased that you were allowed time of Silent. I remember Joe Shaw , being picked in the squad for an England B fixture. My school was in darkest pig land, headed by the snortmeister who was aware that four or five of us were Blades. to the core. He pre tempted the question to be asked re the game by threatening to cane any boy who took leave of absence on the match day.
We all went, we were all caned and one member got an extra whack for calling the pig a twat.

I remember going to the Weast Ham game at the Lane we wasnt allowed time off so had some detention
The Pigs were allowed time off to go and see Pele, my reasoning that I wanted to go and see Bobby Moore
was ignored

I can tell you the exact difference.

I know many Wednesday fans who simply call themselves such, and who 'haven't been for years' and who you'll struggle to have a proper conversation about our clubs about, unless it's recalling past achievements. The arrogance still lives inside them, and even the younger generation seem to have inherited these characteristics, despite seeing no real success.

Blades are generally very into it, maybe not always attending, but they're still passionate and very much still have the spark. You can usually talk football for hours with someone who calls themself a Blade, it's like a warmth.

do you still go? my brother in law is a City ST holder, has been for years but says it was more fun before the glory hunters turned up. him and his mates have been going to Oldham games recently
Yes I still have my ST. I know what your brother in law means though. Looking back we did have some fun in the third tier but it's easy to say that now. We were lucky and got out by the skin of our teeth after 1 season.

heh.. i was there mate. went for a laugh :)

It's their glory hunters (many from out of town) that do their club the most dis service.

When SW are doing well they buy the shirts, scarves, car stickers etc and shout from the roof tops that they are massive fans.

However in times of struggle they don't want to know and they hate to be underdogs.

We're more loyal and thrive on being the underdog.

There's no difference at all. People are daft if they think otherwise. Both groups have their normal and their nutters, and it's impossible to generalise.

There we go.

Fucking hell. How do you de-contaminate speakers?

Ossie and Tango,
Waddle skinning Giggs,
We'll never forget the 96

I'm serious as cancer when I say
"Rhythm is a dancer"

as the most tasteless lyric ever written.
