What happened to Swindon in the play offs back in 1990?

As we have drawn Swindon, it reminded me about a certain incident back in 89/90 in div 2 (The season we went up). I can't remember what happend though.. can anyone remind me?

did they play in the final and beat sunderland? And not get through?

Financial irregularities.

They originally got demoted 2 leagues but on appeal it was reduced to 1 and thus they ended up back in the 2nd tier.

Spurs a couple of years later were found guilty of very similar charges and were not demoted any divisions.

But London.

Swindon beat Sunderland in the play off final but were found guilty of illegal payments to players over a number of years (including enticing a player from Bramall Lane, Steve Foley)

Sunderland were awarded the third promotion place instead.
