Thing is it could have done, that was my point which obviously whooshed over your cranium. Personally I was always very supportive of NW whilst he was manager and sometimes at no small risk to myself on occasions, but once he left, I was able to be a bit more subjective. He was the right man at the right time when he was first appointed. He used the promotion season for his own ends and his tenure as manager in the premiership was to say the least embarassing.

It was an odd situation where he got us promoted but we were content to let his 1-year contract run out - most clubs would have added additional reassurance. When you throw in the fact that Brian Kidd was seemingly installed over his head into the coaching staff, it doesn't exactly look like an ideal situation for someone that exceeded expectations with that set of players in getting automatic promotion, and made us genuine contenders to stay up (again, exceeding expectations). With the speed of Robson's appointment and his availability most of that year, plus the loosening of the purse strings when he was appointed, you get the feeling that regardless of whether Warnock kept us up he was going to be moved on for Robson.

Warnock didn't say that in his book, so you despise the bloke over something you've made up or imagined.
He consistently said that he had agreed with McCabe to discuss a new contract when the season was over.
A few (anti-Blade) newspapers dragged up the story in the run up to the game to create a story and cause trouble.

1. Warnock came in when we were seriously bobbar. He steadied the team, brought in new players, we made a couple of good challenges and were not good enough to get through two semi finals and one playoff final in the same, breathtaking season.

2. We gained promotion two seasons later after strengthening and retaining a large portion of that playing staff.

3. We gave the PL a go and had it been for a few setbacks - Gerrard's 'intent' penalty, Kozluk's disallowed goal, even Hulse's broken ankle and then Carlos fucking Tevez, we would have just stayed up.

4. Warnock was offered a two year contract.

5. We can assume that no great investment was coming to the playing staff if we'd been relegated or stayed up.

6. Since Warnock went, we have been seriously bobbar.

Conclusion: Whilst he's not everyone's cup of tea, Warnock didn't destroy this club. The board and McCabe haven't helped much.

When he joined: struggling against relegation from the 2nd tier and crowds averaging about 12K with the PL as far away as the moon.

When he left, just relegated from the PL with crowds of around 30,000, with the income of a PL season plus two years worth of parachute payments which enabled subsequent managers to spend a lot of money to try to get us back in the PL, but which they pissed up the wall.

He more than doubled the average attendance. Increased the fan base. It’s never dropped to pre-Warnock levels since.

Funded the establishment of the Academy with player sales, increased attendances, cup runs and promotions. We’re still benefitting now.

Finally climbing above Wednesday and scoring numerous memorable victories over them.

Some of the biggest matches and/or thrilling victories we’ll ever see. Leeds (twice), Arsenal (twice), Liverpool (thrice), Spurs, Forest.

A League cup semi, A FA Cup Semi, 3rd place in the Championship, A Play-off Final, A promotion. A season in the Premier League.

But apart from that, what did Warnock ever do for us?

Sorry for being impolite but the others were largely "the shit on the bottom of DB's boots" though I had a soft spot for Spackman for some reason and he had a better win ratio than DB ( though not as good as NC's).
