From working internationally with USA they really believe they are superior to the rest of the world and know it all about everything. The whole culture is about firing people and driving people by fear of losing your job, they are astounded at English law that protects the worker. Additionally they like people who talk the talk and doff the cap (not necessarily deliver!). If you stand up to them and tell them would be better doing xyz you are on to a hiding to nothing. I'm guessing that's what Wilder did!
