Took the opportunity to watch the "other lot" last night and it was a very entertaining game and a typical local derby. Both teams were "at it" from the start as you would expect and the effort levels and pace of the game was exhausting to watch, credit to both teams - or is it?

There were two gifted goals in a crazy 5 minute spell just after half time but other than that neither keeper had saves to make until the 94th minute when Rotherham at last found the target. I'm not saying there was no good forward play by some energetic attacking players for Wednesday but it was all 100 m.p.h with little control or composure and chances were rushed at.

That leads me to my point. As I watched the game I was thinking how different the pace of the game was compared with games we see in League 1 where our opposition does not take us on toe to toe, rather they sit back to defend for their lives and hope to snatch any morsel going on the break.

There has been a lot of quality debate on here since the Fleetwood game and there is an appreciation of the need for control and patience, much more appreciation than we see and hear amongst the crowd at home games in fact. However, watching your players "at it" from the off is exciting and far more gratifying - Barnsley away last season was one of those games and another local derby.

I don't think we can play like that week in week out but there are two areas where I think the team should strive to improve and up the tempo for big spells in the first half:- 1. pressing the opposition 2. movement by forward players for the ball and quicker delivery.

The games at Bramall Lane meander on for far too long. By all means once the game is won see it out, however there is a need to step up the tempo, not helter-skelter for 90 minutes but way more intensity than there has been. The two teams last night kept up the pace for 94 minutes but play like that every week and there would be burn out. I'm not advocating that, maybe half way house towards that would be plenty.

Is our manager seeking more intensity or is he looking for steady, methodical, controlled first half caution, dare I say Clough-esque? Watching him on the touchline last Tuesday he was not at all happy. So is it the players? Is it a lack of confidence? Possession is king but slow possession achieves little unless it bursts into life in the final third.

The players may be inhibited by the home crowd and stay in their shell. The crowd round me are looking to shout "forward" "forward" "forward" at every opportunity, it's their new sport and they are full of it. Perhaps they should shout "Faster" and "Move for it" because that's what's needed more. Shouting "Forward" is too simplistic and has no credibility to be honest. Maybe any of that type of shouting is entirely counter-productive, maybe it's not, it's going to happen.

When we have seen United teams gain promotion in the past there has been that wonderful spectacle when going to games - every player "at it", knowing his role and his colleagues' roles, optimism and the sheer enjoyment of achieving something as a team. It only applies to three promoted teams each year and some of those scratch their way up. We are nowhere near the level yet but maybe not too far away. Once it starts rolling it snowballs.

Wendy fans were singing their manager's name last night. As someone on Shoutbox said last night, when did our fans last do that? Let's hope we are doing so by the New Year.

I didn't watch the game last night, but what you say is what I have been saying the team should do for about 3 years now. Every time we look good recently, is when all players are moving about and looking hungry for the ball, both in and out of possession. That never lasts very long though. I think the reason being that our players aren't fit enough to do it for long spells in a game.

Looking at Wednesday as much as it pains me to say it, they will go up this season. They have a rich guy that spends and gets in the players the manager needs. Without it taking 3 months to get the deal over the line. Worth the investment 150 million if they get there. Surely our Prince has got to take a punt and throw some big bets in like their guy has.
Piggy fans at work will be unbareable, digging out their old Chuppa Chups shirt and shit......

Too early for me to say whether they'll reach the promised land. Yes' they looked half decent. But as someone else has commented, lets see where they are when the long winter days and nights kick in and all their Johnny Foreigners are daubed in their traditional black tights and gloves and look like they don't really want to be there.

What was all that bollox with Joao? Uncontrollably sobbing cos he'd lost a tooth? It'll be interesting to see how he copes this winter

I think most are missing the point. We at the moment are not a physically strong side Adkins knows this so he has to get the team to play in a different way. That is a patient way and avoiding challenges where possible. It can be very boring because it is about keep ball and more trying to draw the opposition away from a disciplined formation and attitude. It worked the other night and Fleetwood had no answer and did not know how to get the ball and in the end lost all fight. I think we will play the same today trying to create the space. you will also here people calling for more movement but unless the pass is really clear the risk will not be taken because we struggle to win the physical battle so the ball will come back.

I think the Jonny foreigner bit is a myth these days. The reality that Rotherham are shite is more pertinent.

We pressed Fleetwood high up the pitch for most of the game on Tuesday. At one point we had five players pressing a throw in deep in their left back position.

See also the pressing that led to the second goal.

More to the point Rotherham are certs for the drop no doubt.

Rotherham, apart from no10,were slow and pedestrian
Wednesday, tbh, look to have got a good squad,

I thought it was a pretty awful game, and ironically, while watching it, I mentioned how it lacked the usual bite of a derby game (shows how people see things differently I guess!).

The unmentionables had a good spell for 5 minutes either side of the half time whistle (I thought Rotherham were slightly lucky to go in 0-0, they could have easily conceded at least one just before the break). They came out guns blazing second half and scored a couple. Apart from that, they looked pretty awful, constantly cheating (they could have easily had two players sent off with a different referee), elbows everywhere and hacking away at the opposition. I honestly thought the best player on the pitch was Maguire, who didn't even play for the first half (he had pin-point delivery from dead balls and they looked a constant threat once he came on).

I suppose I should begrudgingly admit they just about deserved their win. They were, only just, very slightly better than (23rd place) Rotherham. I don't watch them regularly, and got bored watching them on Sky last week so turned over. I have no idea if that was typical of them, but I saw nothing which makes me think they're "back" (as they keep singing). As Ben said above, there are easily 6 better teams in that division.

Oh yeah, and this...

Agree the longest 27 minutes I've watched in the first half, turned it over so boring.

watched it on Bladesplayer and while I could see what they meant at times, it didn't seem anywhere near as bad to me as many who went (and indeed the RS commentator) had said - maybe you had to be there? Thought the build up for the 3rd goal was really good as well, Adams, Baxter, JCR, Coutts, Wallace all involved.

They were playing Rovram FFS, they wont go up, and we'll muller them next year. :)

They were toothless

Whilst they are doing well and fair play to them, it shows what investing in a team can do. They have only beat teams in the bottom half if I remember correctly. December will see how far off they are as they play teams who are aiming for promotion.

I don't think so. Me and my mate who supports that lot were not that impressed by the match at all. One of their players went off crying for goodness sake.

Two deflected goals and if Camp does better with the original shots the game stays at 0-0. Camp had a shocker more than anything else. Yeah Wednesday did OK out of possession closing down but their quick passing going forward wasn't that impressive. The shooting from both teams was pretty awful. Wednesday were nothing special against Hull and probably should have lost that match.

If comments on the Sheffield forum are anything to go on then it seems like Wednesday have just won the champions league.

Yes the tempo is higher in the championship and it's a step up from League One. Although having seen some Championship matches this season I'm not too worried if we got promoted. The standard of football from most teams isn't amazing. Only a handful of teams are really impressive.

Watched some of the game then turned over to watch F1 2nd free practice, that was a none event as well;)

Everyone says they are spending their inflated ticket prices - and I don't know how much they are paying in wages - but how much have the actually spent on transfer fees do you think? These are their signings:

They win 1 in 3 away at a Rotherham a team surely going down 2-1. They are 9th having played a game more than anyone else , champions league material ,ticker tape parade the lot.
We win 3-0 having lost 1 in 8 to go 4th in the league and get booed off.

I can't watch the Pigs on tv as the commentators normally use the phrases "massive" and "sleeping giant" all the way through.

I was hoping that their wealthy owner model would fall spectacularly on its arse but it seems that they are once again coming out of it smelling of roses (pigshit flavoured roses).

The bits of championship football I've seen this year have been fairly end to end though, hopefully we'll not be too much longer in league 1. Be interesting to see what we did players wise if we ever go back up, on the evidence of the pigs a fair amount of spending on wages and players is required.

Fingers crossed they'll not win a game between now and May and I'm wrong but the signs aren't good.

Based on the quotes pre season the "undisclosed" players came to anywhere between £5m and £10m in fees. You never know though as it could have been more pig propaganda.

Amazing how 2 people can see a game so differently. I watched it last night & what I saw was 2 poor teams playing an equally poor game. Quite a few of my mates are Millers, so had a natural interest. Surely they're going down? Johnson Clarke-Harris seems to be the only player who's any good for them, or at least it appeared that way. For Wednesday, Forrestieri seems the only one with a bit of quality. Everyone else on the pitch huffed & puffed but lacked any quality IMO.

Watching the pigs against the Arsenal tonight, I can't believe they were shitter than us a couple of seasons ago and going into administration. Shows what a owner willing to spend gets you player wise. They have a Wallace that's not a crock of shit like ours. Man it's Feckin embarrassing.
It will be Chuppa Chupps a plenty round sheffield this weekend. They will all be out scarring the kids this weekend in their vintage Wendy's shirts.

Likewise, they will be everywhere, even the part timers will be out in force.....

One swallow doesnt make a summer and all that but it seems an ambitious owner and proper investment in players (5.5m on 2 players alone and a big percentage of the 35k for hoopers wages ) is making a difference.
