Watching football at Bramall Lane in years gone by.....and cricket of course....white railings, dressing rooms on John Street, wire netting round players' entrance to the pitch,cigarette lighters and matches flashing all over the background, no subs, no technical areas, trainers with a bucket and sponge, three sided ground, games only on Saturdays, no mobile phones, no internet, score for away games put up every 15 minutes on cricket pavilion at Reserve Games - no other means of keeping up with the score, temporary stands for big cup games built on the cricket ground, regular 57000 capacity crowds- police limits imposed regularly, walk round from Bramall Lane end at half time, Arnold Laver, John Harris, no fan segregation, "W formation" including 3 forwards minimum!!!!!, big sheets collecting thrown coins sailing above our heads for charity, all standing on all three sides with a few sitting in the stand, scarves, rattles, woolly hats, Yorkshire County Cricket Ground, at least 3 County games each summer, Australia played here in a warm up game including Don Bradman though I didnt see him my father did, cushions, Tizer bottles 3d returnable deposits - big money!, wooden benches, manual scoreboards, Pavilion Clock, pavilion balcony, Gentleman and Players entrances, White programmes with green writing printed up to date at lunchtime by some technological marvel, sitting on Kop watching Yorkshire and watching grass grow on the football pitch, fast bowlers run ups from the long grass of the football pitch, Wardle, Trueman, Binks, Wilson, Padgett, Sharpe, Illingworth, Close, Appleyard, Boycott later , etc etc., can't begin to name the footballers but they were all heroes in those days apart from them my Dad said were rubbish, autograph hunting,scrap books, queuing for big cup game tickets Sunday mornings, SWFC bribery scandal, selling Mick Jones - that's when the music stopped and never changed tune.
