Can’t see that Clough did too much wrong tonight. His team can’t finish for toffee and that’s why they’ll most likely be relegated. But tonight they were the better side right up until they saw the goal in front of them.

That said, his 4-5-1 method is something I’m relieved to see the back of. We used to play that at home in Div1 for heaven’s sake.

Really? Apart from the odd spell here & there and towards the end (where we constantly had them on the break anyway) I thought we dominated the game.

I might be alone, but I like Clough - well, at least I don't have any ill will towards him.

He was too negative, and made some questionable decisions but he provided some great entertainment in the cups and brought us Basham, Freeman, Coutts and technically Brooks too.

There's always one.

There was also two good shouts for MOTM from Fleck n Bash. They both had good games. However, when Brooks came on we moved into overdrive and started pushing through the middle of the Park with Brooks willing to run on. I really enjoyed the second half but thought that in the first half we stopped a t 20 metres out , passed it about a bit and then tried to get to the byline. We were missing a cutting edge really. Oh by the way, well done to Billy for running his gonads off. Not much effect on the ball but, off the ball........wow!

That was a huge win, in terms of points, keeping touch with the playoff places, making use of our game in hand and most importantly... the performance and to get back to showing our attacking football.

Cheers Roy. Much appreciated as always.
Taxi for clough!!.
Bye bye little old burton!.
Thanks to Nigel for bringing coutts in but can't forgive him for the idea that higdon was quality?. Higdon is in the same category as Hammond for me!. Onwards and upwards. UTB

Clough's Achilles Heel was his Head Scout. Higdon was a panic buy a few days before the season started. Maybe bought on the strength of a newsagent's videos.

We were not geared up to do early transfer business in preparation for the new season unless it was from within a 10 mile radius of Derby.

I appreciated some of what he did for us and thought he had the potential to be a good fit when he first came.

Ultimately the success he did have only served to accentuate the pigs ear he made of the final league season.

I don't dislike Nigel at all but his footballing epitaph from fans of clubs he managed will drown in the same few comments, negative, unambitious, played his Derby mates.

Dont forget Che and his 1.5 million.:)

Duffys bit of magic just before the first goal was a joy to behold:)

Burton weren't as bad as Sunderland, Ipswich or Barnsley. They attacked more than I expected and could have easily scored

Also, has Darren Bent always been that size?

Bents a spent force at this level but could do ok for them lower down the leagues.

Good old FLN.

Not even good enough for Burton.

Reading that warms my heart.

At least you've been consistent, and ultimately right, about Clough since day one. Well, before day one actually. :) Unlike one poster who reckoned NC was "Mr Sheffield United" and was "building a dynasty with himself, Brannigan and his (now much maligned) newsagent brother

Why does former England International and son of one of this countries greatest managers get labelled 'Funny Little Nige' by some on here?

Frankly he's pretty dour and around about average height.

It seems a bit strange to me. You might not like his management style... but don't act so bloody superior

Cloughs good for stabalising and steadying a ship. Perfect example being us; christ knows where we would have ended up that season if he hadnt come in, and for that half season alone we should all be pretty thankful for the guy.

His problem, as others have pointed out, is his cautious lack of ambition. Need to grind out draws and scrape the odd win to stay up? Nige is your man. Need to put together winning runs of 5 or 6 to push for top 2/ top 6? No chance.

Perhaps Burton due to their size/finances might end up being a stretch too far this season, but I’d not back against him to keep most sides reasonably comfortable in a division; he’s got mid-table written all over him (thought he was perfect for Rotherham the other year after their Kenny Jackett fiasco).

Out of all the lame managers we had he wasn’t the worst but watching his teams was boring and negative. I think he has done a reasonable job at Burton because they are punching above their weight
Clough is best suited to smaller, underdog clubs where expectations are low and he can set them up not to lose. It’s quite surprising that as a striker he is so defensive.

Worth remembering as well that he stabilised a club that looked like it was going to drop down even further than we ever imagined. Weir had us set for League Two.

Unfortunately, like other managers who have done similar, as soon as there was something to lose he started to get more and more defensive, seemingly hoping that you could grind out every game and expect to move up the table. The cup run was fantastic but also has to be taken for what it was: a run of games in which sitting deep and counter-attacking hoping to nick a narrow victory was more than acceptable. The same wasn't true when he was expected to go out in League One.

Even that I could tolerate. He wasn't an exciting manager but he wasn't that awful either. What eventually cost us was his abysmal transfer policy. He was allowed to sign over twenty players and yet managed to go into a play-off semi without a recognised centre-half. Not to exonerate Adkins entirely but I put Clough's transfers down as a big contributor to the failure of the following season. Maybe Adkins would've been just as bad with his picks of Woolford and Hammond but it would've been nice to at least see him get a fair shot at it instead of having a side bloated with nearly-men. Part of Wilder's success was that he able to do a huge clear out and get a fresh squad to play with.
