Looking at this thread explains the term of "having a bit of a Barney" when describing a childish argument with someone. Every thread Barney posts in soon loses sight of what it is about and decends into playground stuff of he said this and he said that and complaints of people picking on him. You know when you have been Barney'd :tumbleweed: :tumbleweed:

Like Barney (hopefully) I think I'll step away from this now. We've said our bit.

Christ we've got some arse lickers on here, haven't we? Crawl out son...

Weren't you the one who said personal abuse should not be tolerated, but you do it yourself, so presumably it's OK? You seem to resort to it (including questioning people's intelligence) pretty often.

Yes, arse lickers.

What makes you think I care about anyone agreeing with me?

Every reply you make says exactly that. It took you 42 minutes to go from there being nothing to be said because you were right, to replying. You were right, so why bother staying involved if you don't care what people think?

It's a mystery to Bert why people respond the this Barney character.
He's clearly not a full shilling.

Personal abuse is not allowed, he'll set Foxy on you.

I must say as I read through this thread, I found myself agreeing with Barney on this one. However, I think the long drawn argument is more a result of ambiguous wording and misinterpretation than anything else.

We shouldn't generalise and stereotype. We all know it's wrong to say the Man U fans I have met are nobs therefore all Man U fans are nobs. Whilst it might not have been the intention of pommpey to say that, the earlier posts in the thread certainly came across that way.

Barney. Having read your snappy to the point post. I think I can safely say............

I have NT read Barneys posts so have lost the thread of the debate somewhat. This was meant to be a slightly tongue in cheek view of my day out.

And no you cannot say all Man U fans are nobs, just as you cannot classify all fans of one team as a type.

But you can say there is a certain manner about many of them particularly at old Trafford. I do have a view that you tend to see more genuine and real Man Ure fans at away matches.

Doesn't stop me despising them and seeing them as architects of much that is bad about the modern game

But who's Dame Hattie?

A) Higdon
B) Eric Pickles
C) that bloke with the fork at half time at Old Trafford
D) Recent physio at home match (Coventry ?)
E) Dianne Abbott
F) Baxter
G) All of the above on a serious bender at Burger King

I think our club and fans are what most established premier clubs and their media luvvies would call a "throwback". We still get passionately supported in the lower leagues and simply this puzzles fans in the overly sanitised premier league. When we actually get to play them they simply don't know how to respond to us.

Can we say the majority of Man Utd supporting sailors are knobs ? ;)

I used to work for one. He was the archetypal arrogant, "we've won everything" twat who would play for the foul at 5 a side ... and came from Guildford. He knew it all, and knew fuck all outside the top six and La Liga.

When I say 'the majority' (earlier) I knew a nailed on 'Red' who has now moved back up there and attends every game. He told me once of the days of Best and Charlton (when he were th'lad, laiaiake) and the dark days of Div 2. On facebook it is all Man U for him. His is the honour of being a supporter of one of the best teams in the country (despite recent events) But of all the several thousand I have encountered (which is a pretty good sample of the UK as a whole, vast majorities have just been 'plastics', displaying this air of 'I only support them, because they are the best' and have no concept that other layers of football exist.

Still think they are contemptible shits. 'Their' team have done some amazing things, played some superb football and changed how the game is played and run, mind.

I think it is you who are very wrong. Manchester United has surfed for the best part of three decades on the machinations of a gifted, mercurial manager, some absolute quality personnel out there on the green stuff and a fucking monstrous articulation of financial clout, media adoration and bled-into fandom. Everywhere I went in the Royal Navy there were Man U shirts of all hues and years. Every messdeck was spacked with 'ManYoo fans' many of whom had never fucking seen them play with just fresh air between their 'idols' and themselves, paying sixty sheets for a restricted view, if they'd bothered. It was like the bubonic plague. Ranged against it (on my last ship for example) were the odd Southend United, Carlisle, Chester City and a fanatical, Greenwich Blade-style Swindon fan, who would move heaven and earth to attend games. And adopted Pompey fans who were not from the region, but had to have someone to cheer on, and that someone wasn't 'ManYoo'.

But the Man United fans were the fucking worst. Absolutely no appreciation of the game outside of the big four (as it was) and total lauding of Beckham like he was fucking god almighty himself. And that worship stretched to buying their kids 'BECKHAM' Man U shirts and kits and having posters of the team they never saw on their lockers and bunks. They basically supported the best team in the land because it was a better feeling than hedging your bets on teams like Sheffield United. That mentality permeates into the fans who now populate the 70 odd thousand at OT these days. No passionate singing and chanting (why bother? They'll win anyway and I'll waste energy) so out goes 'team songs' and 'match banter'. And that is EXCACTLY why the stuck up plastics get on the supporters backs and see our lot as freaks and weirdoes.

So, y'know. You're wrong. The majority of Man U supporters are shit. And they know they are.

Most of the 'old school' proper Man ooo fans have long gone they have seen the light. and now follow FC United. If you ever get the chance to see FC (away) they sing for 90 minutes - just like the Blades Saturday!
