VAR changes

The problem is there will always be times when it's a marginal offside, under your plan you could still have an attacker who is only 1mm offside. However it is done, there will always be an incident where a player is only slightly off. People just need to get their head around the fact there is a definitive line where it can be a matter of millimetres where a player is off or on.

It’s like the ball being over the line, it’s either over or not. We don’t say, well it was only 1mm short so lets give the goal or it was only over by 1mm so let’s not give that one.

Or 8 inches over the line let’s not give that (Villa Park) mmmmmm

Please get added- foul throws, Goalkeeper 6 second rule, and taking corners from outside the arc
As ive lost count of the number of these the referees and assistants have missed over the last few years.
Yes totally agree on the 6 seconds rule being properly enforced. May be ref gives one warning then it’s a free kick to attacking team.

For me the marginal offsides are the biggest problem that needs to be resolved. As I and others have said there are too many potential inaccuracies for VAR to give marginal off sides by cms. When does the ball leave the foot of the player playing it through? Where exactly is the player who is “off side“ at that moment? Where are the defenders at that moment? Where is the line drawn across the pitch and how wide is that line? We all know that between frames the ball and players can travel several cms so VAR is just not accurate enough to give marginal decisions and so a margin for error should be built in otherwise we will continue to get ridiculous decisions like Lunny big toe at Spurs.

Exactly as others have stated, the current offside system has no margin of tolerance for error. By making the lines wider and giving onside if they touch at all, this would introduce a fair margin of error.

But you can very easily determine the accuracy of the system to +/- however many centimetres. Then you could be sure that anything over that margin of error was offside. Yes, you'd be allowing some that were 1mm off but you'd also be sure that you were only penalising those that were definitively offside. That would both make the system quicker and uphold the spirit of the law. And of course as the tech improves you could become ever more accurate.

The issue is that the current system simply doesn't have the precision they're claiming it does. As it stands the decision is made on completely random grounds such as artifacts on the chosen frame. That's not the criteria we should be using to decide games.

I think as football fans, we couldn't have asked for more. I'm glad they've seen fit to finally put an end to the epidemic of penalty box encroachment.

Very insightful to suggest that referees finally begin to use the monitor available to them, in order to make the decisions themselves, in line with the rest of the planet, who've been doing so for a year.

I see nothing but plain sailing from here on out boys.

New VAR rules worth reading through....compiled this so we have a reference to the changes

Referee Review Area

In 2019/20 there was an outcry from supporters and the media for referees to consult the on-field monitors.

However, Mike Riley, leader of the Premier League's PGMOL group, was against the use of the monitors and it wasn't until January, in the FA Cup, that they were first used in England.

Across Europe and in the Champions League the on-field monitors have been used to great effect and referees will now consult the monitors on a more frequent basis for subjective decisions, such as goals, red cards and penalty kicks.

Goalkeeper encroachment on penalty kicks

From next season, there will be no tolerance on goalkeeper encroachment from penalty kicks which will inevitably result in more retakes.

If a goalkeeper saves from 12 yards but has stepped off their goal line before the shot, VAR will order a retake of the penalty.

This will not apply if the penalty is missed without the interference of the goalkeeper; EG, the ball is hit over the bar.

Player encroachment on penalty kicks

Similarly, there will be no tolerance for player encroachment.

So, if any part of the player’s body that is on the ground is inside the penalty area when the ball is kicked then the penalty will be retaken.

However, as with goalkeepers, this will only apply if the player that has encroached is directly involved in the aftermath of the penalty.

Keeping the flag down for tight marginal offside offences

Assistant Referees will be asked to keep their flag down for any goalscoring chances, to prevent any incorrect offside calls.

Unlike this season, where players have been told to ignore the flag and play to the whistle, Assistant Referees will not raise their flag and VAR will review any marginal offside decision to ensure the correct outcome is reached.

Offsides

There will be no change to the offside rules and no tolerance levels will be allowed.

Although, on tight calls, fans watching the game on the TV will be able to see if a player is on or offside via the colours of the lines shown.

Should a player be onside, the line will turn green, or will alternatively turn red if a player is offside.

Thats all well and good as long as they remember to turn the fucking thing on.

I recall even as far back as secondary school In the 1960s, the PE teacher who coached our school first XI, taking a guy to one side.
He was told that, in the event of a free kick against us, in our half, he was to sit on the ball, or stand in front of it and play dumb 🤷‍♂️ just to give our players a few seconds to get back and reorganized.
This kind of time wasting has been taught in schools for a long time. Sad innit?

With the linesman’s flag now staying down it will interesting as VAR will only look at it for a pen or a goal...so theoretically striker could be offside and still wins a corner and from the resulting corner a goal mmmmm as VAR won’t go back after a corner is awarded or will it....still a fucking farce

I read it as if the player is miles offside, they will flag. If its close, they won't.

It will be much better this season. Why? because we know where we stand.

Last season we thought that it was there to help make the game fairer. So we were disappointed with it.

Now we expect to be shafted, for perfectly reasonable goals to be ruled out, for all the spontaneity and excitement to be snuffed out of the game. We are prepared for and resigned to a travesty.

No real need for linesmen anymore if the are not going to use their flags. Can't wait till the camera's don't work and Man U concede an offside goal.

There is no 6 second rule anymore. I believe. There hasn't been for a few years

I thought the 6 second rule was only brought in within the last few years, to replace to four step rule, which had been in force for years but never enforced. Fairly sure they haven’t got rid of it.

All sounds like Tim nice but dim running the show. Know nowts running the game. Most pens aren't even pens, unless they changed that rule too. Most ex players who are pundits claim it's a pen if they go down in the box from the slightest of contact. A pen is supposed to be for a goal scoring opportunity. How many goals are scored when a player is running away from goal then goes down but they get a pen. Even when there is an actual foul or handball but no chance of scoring they automatically give a pen when the rules state indirect free kick.

not in the rules of football anymore afar as I can see.( happy for someone to show otherwise) I think it is covered in the timewasting law. I think refs just warn keepers first.

In cricket, each team has two chances to refer a decision to technology, makes me wonder if a similar system could work in football and stop the constant referals.
And that's in a game played over days not 90 mins. Maybe they should try talking to rugby and find out how they do things as it seems much better than what we got last season

Whilst it is true that offside "can" be measured to 1mm, it is not clear to me that the technology exists to do that at the moment. In which case we have to be honest and say there is a margin for error. In that case the benefit of the doubt should go with the attacking team. My frustration with VAR In this area last year was that they seemed determined to prove they could make that call and they failed to convince fans of that case.

Cricket had accepted this now and has a concept called umpires call, where the tech guys effectively say, we don't know and responsibility goes back to the man in the middle.

Theoretically that is a problem but it would never happen in reality.

when I googled it the 6 second rule came up. Please can someone on here give a definitive answer to this with chapter and verse. There are I know those with referee qualifications who post. Surely there must be something in the rules otherwise a GK can just hang on to the ball for an indefinite time?

That offside rule is the biggest load of bollocks anyone has come up with and is not in the spirit of the game. Marginal decisions should go in favour of the attacking team, not the defending team. People would rather see goals!!

My proposal would be keep the current system but extend the width of the lines they currently draw x 3. If the lines are touching at all then it is onside. Would be a million times better than the current system.
Should be daylight. We go to football to see goals, not for some idiot to find any excuse to disallow a goal

I read it as if the player is miles offside, they will flag. If its close, they won't.

Or, if the player isn't offside, and you're not a very good lino and put your flag up and players see this and react, expecting the referee to stop play based on what you saw yet the attacker continues to goal and scores past a keeper expecting the offside decision to be made (as even he is trusting the linos professional judgement) then a goal shall be given, as expected. No one shall make a fuss unless the defending team is Manchester United, Liverpool, Frank Lampard's Chelsea or this season back-after-sixteen-long-years Bielsa's Leeds fucking United.

Indeed you are right But if not miles offside but is offside marginally then VAR would look at it Only for a pen or goal...SO attacker kicks ball against keeper when marginally offside and ball goes for a corner then the marginally offside would not be checked and If a goal is scored from the corner the goal would stand

In that situation because a goal isn't scored the linesman can then make the decision by raising his flag, no?

Just watched the Palace game, and they used the pitchside screen well
