It wasn't a must win match.

That's not my opinion, that's a fact.

I don't know even know why it needs explaining.

It was a must win match for Newcastle because they had to win to have any chance of getting promoted.

If they'd lost or drawn it would have been impossible for them to finish above us regardless of our result.
Ok, let’s just say that it was a must win match if we wanted guarantee promotion and move on.

It proved afterwards not to be 'must win', ergo retrospectively it couldn't have been a 'must win' before. Logic says so because er, he keeps repeating it. There's a knowing nod to Pignomics in there.

I think Bill Johnson was remarkably restrained trying to make the point but had to give up to keep his sanity.

What is it about arguing with an idiot....?

The only idiots here are the people who don't understand what a must win match is.

A must win match is a match you have to win. The big clues are in the words must and win.

Again, why this even needs explaining is baffling.

There's nothing retrospective about it.

Everybody knew before the match was played that we didn't have to win to get promoted.

It wasn't a must win match on 4th May, it wasn't a must win match on 5th May and it never will be a must win match because it never was a must win match.

I don't see "everybody" on here supporting you on this. (Is anyone?) And I can't recall anyone on the day thinking we don't need to win this.

If Newcastle had played in the morning, and had won?

Blackburn won the title on the final day of the 1994-95 Premier League season after losing a must win match against Liverpool.

Who knew?

Wow.
You're actually quite an unpleasant person underneath your incredibly arrogant and dismissive persona.
Shame.

He's also struggling with the definition of "everybody" as he seems to think it means "just me".

It's not my fault you're thick.

Just forget about it and move on, love.
Is that ‘love’ as in ‘old cock, ‘mate’, ‘pal’?

Or ‘love’ in the patronising misogynistic sense?

I’m still deciding which side of this argument has the moral high ground.

Don't know about the moral high ground.
But cock piss partridge is the finest example of a firemans helmet seen in quite a while.

So to sum it all up, if PNs case was taken to court, he'd win due to the fact that it turned out "not to be a must win game".

I reality, the Blades that day undoubtably went onto that Filbert Street pitch thinking they had to win it to go up, and put in a winning performance as a result.

I think we're kinda both right on this one, but in the spirit of the initial paradox i.e. the Blades have not put in a winning performance in a pressure situation in a key game, to Pete's knowledge, then i think the 5th May 1990 was such a performance.

On-the-fence Mendonca :)

Would this be a bad time to say I agree with PeterNdlovu081 ?

I haven't given him any likes yet because I'm a miserly bastard. I may reconsider. We'll see how nice he is to me.

We don't know what he thought on the day. We do know what he thinks now with the benefit of hindsight. Did anyone go to Leicester thinking we don't have to win? You clearly believe the players believed they had to. Were they, as professionals, "fucking idiots"?

It was all about his zeal to put Bill Johnson down with his catchphrase, "You're wrong" (also used last week about "matching Resukts" which turned out he hadn't read a quote properly)He stuck with that too.
