Unitedites not from Sheffield

I’m technically from Derbyshire too. There are a lot of us technically from Derbyshire who are spiritually from Sheffield. Because of dem Blades!

When did your mum and dad move to Royston Vasey? And are you still considered “a local”?

Ha ha. They moved there was I was 3. Considering pretty much everyone who lives there supports Utd or Citeh, I've had a somewhat different footballing experience by choosing dem Blades.

I actually escaped at 18 but it was a bit like the Benjamin character out of League of Gentlemen everytime I went back to visit my folks!!

Virtually everyone near where me and esteemed Forgeblade sit near the back of the kop, gangway D, sounds like they were born and raised within about 400 yards of S2 4SU! Forgeblade was born in Jessops and has never lived more than about 6 miles from Bramall Lane, including a nearly 4 year spell living on Shoreham Street (don't ask!). I've been slightly more cosmopolitan, having been born in Sheffield, lived in Dronfield as a kid, been a student in Coventry and Leicester, and actually lived in Sheffield for 30 years. I now live in Greater Barnsley (this is not "south Barnsley", reference to which I regard as an insult to Barnsley!). I have a variable accent, but I'm still a Blade!

My old mate Ahwin Sahwin from Ceylon, who used to post on the old Blades United forum. Wonder if he still gets over?

What the hell is Greater Barnsley?

I'm from Clacton but have been in Sheffield for nigh on four decades, and the Essex accent is long gone.

Maybe to you it has... ask a stranger to see if they can still hear the accent?

I left Sheffield in the 90's to move to London then Essex, where I was quite rightly called a northern monkey due to my accent
I moved back to Sheffield some years later & must've picked up a few southern words as often got called a southern poofter
I then moved to Italy where I was called lo straniero (the foreigner)
I then moved to Australia where I was (& often still am) called a pom.

I met some other poms in India on holiday last year who didn't realise that I was English. They thought I was Australian until I mentioned catching a 'bus' (the Sheffield accent must've come out then).

I've realised accents evolve over time if you live other places for a long time...mine is now such a mess I don't really fit in anywhere :(

I know someone from Dronfield who supports United. We cast our net far and wide and draw our support from all over the Radio Sheffield district! Impressive stuff really.

Of course that doesn't compare to Wednesdays worldwide fan base and beyond which according to Porktalk they have a supports club on Mars and Saturn

Have you checked your anus ?

What about the millions of fans in Chengdu, Hungary and the central coast that our dalliance with those regions yielded?

I know not what happened to the legions of Blades fans, amassed through our associations with Ferencvaros and Central Coast Mariners. However:

Chengdu fans sit mainly in Westfield Upper. When they get excited you can hear a tonal roar. They wear half n half scarves, don’t know the names of any of the players, or even which way we’re kicking. But they seem to enjoy themselves.

I'd guess from the OP that Sheffielders also extends to Rotherham/North Derbyshire (Sheffield metropolitan area). There's little real distinction, only from which council you fall under with many places. For example, if you're from Aston you're technically from Rotherham, but I'd guess most would consider themselves as Sheffielders.

Agree with the earlier comment on seeing some kind of heat map of the spread of supporters. It'd be interesting.

Born and bred Sheffielder. Personally it doesn’t really matter to me if there are Unitedites who aren’t from Sheffield, once a Blade always a Blade in my book.

The one thing that would upset me would be if we had a long stint in the top flight, and all of a sudden attracted new supporters for the glory rather than following the Blades through thick and thin.

Generally I don’t like people who choose to support one of the big clubs from afar because they are more successful that their local clubs, i pretty much point blank refuse to talk football with them because there is nothing I can learn from them

Born in Rotherham but a Blade passed down from my old man.

What’s always struck me as strange is that his old man my grandad supports Wednesday!

Revolution Jr was not born in Sheffield, does not sound like he is from Sheffield, and has never lived in Sheffield.

Despite this, he now finds our various setbacks as upsetting and frustrating as I do. Poor lad.

The nearest ground to where he was born? Stamford Bridge. Chelsea should have been his local team.

I'm from Derbyshire and wouldn't class myself as a Sheffielder. Family on my dad's side took him to games and they were originally from Sheffield hence the support of the Blades.

Not everyone will.

But I know plenty of people from places like Dronfield and Killamarsh who do.

There's places that are now part of Sheffield that were Derbyshire 50 or so years ago. Anyone born there since, may not even know that.

An acquaintance of mine used to develop a broad Sheffield accent as soon as he stepped over the Derbyshire/South Yorkshire border. "Now then" became "Nar Den" in a matter of seconds.

Our Jack, parents born in North Yorkshire and Essex, recently wrote in birthday cards to me and the better half (our birthdays five days apart) Thank you for introducing me to the best football club in the world. Not sure he would have written that two years ago but it touched our hearts :)

Balham Jnr was born in Kingston meaning the nearest ground was AFC Wimbledon's. The nearest ground to our house is Brentford's (excluding Twickenham and the Stoop). He will still be a Blade if I have anything to do with it and I'll disown him if he even considers supporting Chelsea.

However Bert Jnr didn't have the option of supporting any other team

My grandad, a Sheffielder, forced me to support the Blades, aged 4

I'll disown him if he even considers supporting Chelsea.

Quite right and exactly how it should be. Having said that, my dad was the only Blade in a big family of Wendyites. He did it to spite his old man but I made it clear to our kids that there would be none of that.

I told my eldest it was fine if he didn't like football but if he did, there was only going to be one team for him. Both kids now have suitably shit lives dragged down by the emotional servitude of being a Blade, so I've done my bit.

You're right, exactly as it should be.

Revolution Jr had a brief dalliance with Man City in the Mancini era but Revolution Sr and I put paid to that. Now he's miserable like us.

One of the highlights of this season for me was attending the Villa away game together - the first time we've all ever been away as a group.

Supports utd? Surely there can't be that many blades around? Unless you're referring to the copycat Lancs and Yorks railway company Newton Heath? I wish we'd trademarked "United" when we formed. The club would be rolling in cash if all the others had to pay us royalties..

What the hell is Greater Barnsley?

I believe my exiled father is referring to the satellite villages around dingle-land. Certainly where he lives is as far from the stereotype of Barnsley as its possible to get!

Many moons ago I was watching a Sunday lunchtime derby (0-0 yawn) in a pub in Fallowfield, Mancs. The only other person watching was a Blade with a thick West Country accent. He had his dad to thank for his United affliction!

My children, born and bred in Horsham, will have no choice. My three year old already knows this!!! (I’ll wait a bit longer to have the Yorkshire cricket discussion... ;-))

I'm a non-Sheffield Blade. I was born in Scotland, moved to Hampshire, then York, then Stoke, back to Scotland, then Catterick now I live in High Wycombe.

Always been a Blade, thanks to my Father.

My Dad, from Cheltenham went to watch lots of teams in his youth, he wanted to get the feel for which club was 'his', which club felt right and that he could most identify with. He didn't live in Cheltenham long and moved around a lot (like me). After a long search (it wasn't until his late teens) he finally knew Bramall Lane was home. He said he felt it instantly. Like nowhere else on Earth. He also liked the fans. Never regretted the decision.

We've been going to games together (from varying distances) for over 25 years. I'm delighted with this and proud of him. I think it's quite a unique story of football following. I expect judgement on this but it's rather late to change my mind on which team I love.

I really hate High Wycombe. So glad i'm moving away in 2 months!

I hated Wycombe too.

Moved down south to work in Slough, but lived in Maidenhead.

My office was subsequently moved to just outside the centre of Wycombe and it could sometimes take me an hour to get to work up the A404M and across Handycross roundabout.

I’m from Attercliffe, my three older lads (aged 37, 35, 34) were born and brought up in Tunbridge Wells, all Blades, as is my latest (aged 6), born in Swindon, lives in Newbury, attended his first games this year (Fulham A, Bristol City A). Looking forward to first game at the Lane with his big brothers.

Born and bred in Leeds and never lived in Sheffield.

My dad had no interest in sport but thankfully in 1969 the Blades chose me.

Saw my first "live" game at BDTBL in 1971 and I've seen a hell of a lot more since then.

My son is called Keith Edward so he had no choice but to follow in my footsteps.
