United or Wednesday

Go to a Tuesday night game, under the lights and with a decent attendance, you will wish to go no where else and will worship at the grand cathedral that is beautiful down town bramall lane.
If you can find it look for Blades vs Spurs in the cup few seasons ago, even the Spurs manager was impressed and had nothing but praise for SUFC and it's supporters and could not wait till they played us in the premiership.
We are and always will be Blades.

Cheers for the reply. I don't expect anyone to care about my choice in the end and yes ultimately it is my choice but I appreciate the fans opinion and frankly that's the best way I consider going about deciding.

No constructive reason can be given really because a constructive argument to persuade you to not go to the dark side would take hours upon weeks upon years to write, rainforests would need to be chopped down, ink would be in short demand and memory sticks would be full up. If you can get to Sheffield uniteds last 3/4 fixtures of this season I highly recommend it, you'll never look elsewhere again.

Keeping natural bias out of my mind for the benefit of debate it's worth mentioning that our season ticket will be notably cheaper so from a purely financial standpoint it's worth going for United.

Also I hear that Wednesday fans spend their downtime torturing kittens and not tipping waiters when they give good service so there's that too...

I've heard this also, it's also fact that wedn*sday fans are less likely to wash hands after going to the toilet and shower once a week

I also heard that in order to become a fan you have to go through a process where they infuse your DNA with that of an actual owl and as a result it sends you insane and only able to talk utter bollocks.

Although this might not be correct mind. Other rumours suggest that the DNA splicing is more of a 60:40 split than half and half.

Think point 6. Might needs a little legal moderation, after all it's them that exaggerate not us!

Thanks for the advice.

I'll alter point #6 to:

Apparently, a safety certificate was granted inappropriately to allow SWFC to host a semi-final at which 96 Liverpool fans were subsequently killed. This may, in my opinion, have had something to do with the relationship at the time between officials of Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.

If this is true, it amounts to corruption on a grand scale and someone should be charged with manslaughter.

I think that covers my arse OK ;)

living the student life eh? it's 05:50 in NYC - can you not sleep?

anyway, my advice would be Bramall Lane is nearest to where you'll be living and season tickets will be cheaper. seem to recall that you can get discount rate via the Universities - though that might not include season tickets - worth checking out

if the most important thing to you is the level of football at the expense of all else, you might want to wait until it's clear that Wednesday have missed out on the play offs or until after the result of them if they can hold off Fulham and get there

we are not guaranteed promotion yet but the chances of anything going wrong this year are ridiculously small - perhaps as small as Donald Trump being successful as a candidate for POTUS

whilst you're in Sheffield, you should go and watch Sheffield FC and Hallam FC - perhaps in pre-season games or when the team you're following don't have a game seeing as you're coming to the home of football (soccer-ball)

Get yourself settled in your student accommodation before making a decision . Trying to get help off a forum is a bit backward . Get here , go to both grounds and make your mind up .

The friends you make will influence your decision unless you are Billy no mates , sad bastard who will be going to the match on your own .

Be grown up not a kid .

I realise I will ultimately be influenced by the people who I meet but in advance I was curious to get some opinions from the fan forum (I am part of numerous US team forums so I know who I'm dealing with). This is my first discussion with anybody on the matter and although this isn't the primary reason I will be in sheffield for, football is such a big part of my life and I want to experience what Sheffield has to offer to its fullest. Therefore asking you kind folk is important because my previous knowledge regarding fan forums was it was the epicentre of the teams fan culture.

Thanks for putting me straight.

"The 61-year-old says he has been an Owls fan for over 30 years, remarking on his Twitter account @jermjackson5: "Dates back to the 80s. Went to a game. Can't remember the stadium but took an interest in ever since."

Not surprised he can't rememeber , bloody drug addled tosspot.

I've redone my earlier post:

Any other Jackson brother (APART FROM THAT CLUELESS WANKER JERMAINE) or Michael Jackson

Go to the Steelers as well , wont be as good as the Briuns .
But hey nothings perfect , including the nutters who follow The Blades .

Hello everyone,
Wasn't quite sure where to put this but I was looking to get your help.
I am currently a college student in New York and have been given an opportunity which requires me to live in Sheffield for a year. I love football/soccer (don't hate on the word, it originates from Oxford University) and have been a member of New York Red Bulls since its foundation as well as playing all my life. Anyway, one of the main things I am looking forward to is getting a season ticket at one of the Sheffield clubs, either United or Wednesday, but I am having trouble deciding who to go for. When I was looking into this last year it seemed an obvious decision to choose Wednesday due to the Championship football on offer although that benefit is likely to be equalled as United look set to be promoted.
Why am I here wasting your time on the forum? Basically I want to get the fans opinion to try and persuade me and give me a reason to choose their club. Due to other sports teams I support in the US (red and white colours) and the fact Bramall Lane will be a bit easier to access from where I am staying I have decided to ask you guys first.
I appreciate any advice given though please keep comments constructive, saying things like they are pigs (I know you call each other that) and hillbillies isn't an argument. Match day experience, fan culture, players, history would be preferable.
Thanks

I've been many years in NYC and often go to the Red Bulls, who are a bit like the Blades in that they have great fans but usually choke on the big occasion. Often go in the Green Room first, and dislike NYCFC. Last time I went to Harrison was with the barman at one of the Blades pubs near the Lane. If you go down Football Factory or Smithfield Hall I'll buy you a pint and try to dissuade you from becoming a pig.

If you pick Sheffield United one day you'll look back on it as being the best worst decision you've ever made. Heartache has followed us for years but at the minute this is changing, you're lucky you've got a choice the majority of us are forced into this life and let me tell you this, if you're not prepared for mental breakdown or have an unstable heart condition Sheffield United aren't for you ! Joking aside I think deep down you've already made your choice and it's Sheffield United... welcome aboard.

Both universities have plenty of Blades. You could try to make contact with some of them in advance, because if you buy a season ticket early independently, you could end up sitting next to one of us miserable lot for the year. If United get promoted, there will be fewer tickets available for individual games, and some of them will not be good.
Main reason for choosing Bramall Lane - it will broaden your education. We have a recent history of failure; every 13 years since 1968 we have needed to win the last game to avoid relegation, and have failed. Next due in 2020. We create records, such as getting 90 points in a season, and still not getting promoted, scoring 5 in a semi-final playoff away leg, and losing the tie, etc. This has created a culture of self-deprecating humour, and appreciation of anything positive, as with the current season. In the semi-final against Hull, which we were winning for much of the time, Hull scored a 5th goal right at the end to settle the game 5-3. Rather than sulk, all the United fans immediately stood and cheered and applauded, thanking the players for an amazing cup run. This even confused a lot of the Hull following, who assumed the goal had been disallowed. That was an extraordinary moment, and is my pitch to persuade you to try The Lane.

Bloody hell, that's blown our chances of a plus one.

He'll definitely be Swillsboro bound if he meets you before he gets to BDTBL ;)

Appealing to the subliminal, way to get me haha

As the resident Sheffield Wednesday expert I can offer you a great deal of insight to their natural behaviour and mannerisms if it helps.

Eight thousand years before King Robert's Rebellion, the longest winter descended upon the entire world, lasting a whole generation. In the darkness and cold, Sheffield Wednesday fans descended from the Far North, killing all in their path and reanimating the dead as Wednesday fans to fight in their armies.

With help from giants and the Children of the Forest, a great Wall was raised to bar their return, and Sheffield United was founded to guard it and the realms of Men should they ever rise again

While having an overall humanoid appearance, Sheffield Wednesday fans differ greatly from humans. Their grey-white skin is wrinkly but stretched taut across their frames, giving them a somewhat gaunt, sinewy, and mummified appearance. Their most notable trait however is their glowing blue eyes.

Although Sheffield Wednesday faded into obscurity over the centuries, disturbing reports began to reach the realms of man. Despite pleas for support from Sheffield United to the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, a blind eye has been turned to the return of Wednesday, as they remain embroiled in their own civil war. With most not believing that they exist or ever existed, much like Giants and Children of the Forest.

If I were you, I wouldn't get a season ticket. I'd go to a handful of games at both United and Wendy and go on different stands each time. That's already 8 to 10 matches and by then you'll know better which set of fans you prefer, which overall atmosphere you prefer and how to best consume that atmosphere* You also have an "out" if you end up hating both.

Once you've decided, get a half season ticket for the back end of the year.

*The Kop for example, is going to give you a better atmosphere than any other part of Bramall Lane. But the view isn't the best with the two pillars in the way and the rake is not so steep. The facilities are quite poor too. But it's cheaper and as I say, noisier.

You may prefer to be up in the corner as the views are the best in the ground. You'll also be close to the away fans - some sides in the Championship will bring big numbers and you'll experience decent atmosphere that way. The only way is to find out for yourself - try different areas of the ground.

As an outsider, my first visit to Bramall Lane had me hooked. There's just something about the place that is magic. Logistically, it's the obvious choice.
When you go to the dark side to ask opinions, they will say, we are thick, rough, racist, lower than the lowest, etc etc. You have to see for yourself. We hate them, they hate us. Simple as. So, in a way it's pointless basing your decision on our views over theirs. Why not go on to the other local teams forums and ask them? I suspect they would say we were the better option, even though the other lot are MASSIVE..

My dad and Grandad were both Wednesdayites. The first football match I went too was at Hillsborough. Yet I'm a Blade.
I don't hate Wednesday as a club but I do loathe them. I have good friends who are from the dark side and we have lots of banter.
I was a student and used the student union is Sheffield in the late 60's. I also have a cousin in NY and one in NJ. The one in NJ is a Blade and the one is NY will become a Blade.
My advice? Forget all the hype and jokes, just go to both clubs home match's. Then make your decision. If you choose the Owls I wish you well. If you choose the Blades you will become a member of a very large family. :)
Your children and your grandchildren will become Blades. It could be the start of a new dynasty. It's in yer blood.
BTW I thought students got quite a big concession for matches? Sometimes even free tickets?

The passion that is the Blades. As I walk down Shoreham Street the butterfly feeling (that started in 1960) I see the corner of the Kop and even though still an hour before kick off the heart is beating faster. A pint of beer or fish and chips ( not crisps like that in the US) Then through the turnstiles into the ground heart racing now. We act normal to anyone we meet but inside we are in knots butterfly's all over inside and with heart racing now as I see the pitch and this wonderful ground. The build up then It's announced my team my wonderful team are about to come out and then they appear what a feeling when you see the red and white stripes but don't worry I'm not alone just look round and everyone is going crazy. The sound of Greasy Chip rings round the ground. The Kop in full song. And then my New Yorker friend United attacking down the right a brilliant one two and the ball is smashed in the net the Kop and me go absolutely crazy so joyous that tears are sometimes in your eye. The whole of us Blades fans are going bonkers but at that moment no one cares WE ARE ONE. If you want this we welcome you
