Targaryan eh? Mad as a sack of monkeys, incestuous by tradition, divine right to rule...their sigil isn't blue, by any chance? ;)

Valar Dohaeris.

It's red - a red dragon.

And before the mad king the Targaryans ruled over a largely peaceful world!!

Anyway, Daenaerys is hot!

My two cents.

I've been away from Sheff since 1998, and grew up on the bluer side of the city, but spent last summer working at the uni, staying near the Rising Sun pub on Fulwood Road.

Practical reasons
Assuming you're living nearish to town, then just for practical reasons, I'd go with Blades. It's better socially, as more locals around you will be Blades. You can also walk to Bramall Lane from anywhere, and it's a real pleasure walking through the town you will come to love with your fellow Blades. Hillsborough is a tram ride, or a bus, or a really horrible walk, and you won't get the growing atmosphere that you get from walking to the Lane. Walking to and from the Lane, too, from pretty much any direction, you'll encounter loads of decent pubs, which is great for pre-match atmosphere, and for celebrating afterwards. Very few around Hillsborough. As everyone has mentioned, tickets for Blades are much cheaper than for Wednesday. They've gone all out for promotion and significantly raised prices to try and fund it.

Football reasons
They obviously currently have a better team-they've just spent 10 million on a striker, which is a phenomenal amount for the second division. However, fingers crossed, they are unlikely to go up, and the fans are likely to be becoming increasingly dissatisfied by the empty promises of the high ticket prices, especially if Fulham keep up their form and knock Wednesday out of the play off places.

And, despite the fact we're in different leagues, something special is happening at United this year. We have had a torrid few years, but we have a Blade as manager, a Blade as captain, a team that can play and fight for the shirt, and fans that realize and appreciate this. If we go up, we'll have a really united spirit and underdog mentality, and it's going to be a lot of fun.

Other reasons
Although we are half-owned by what seems to be the poorest person in Saudi Arabia, we are still owned and ran by a local businessman, who is a Blade. He's got his faults, and maybe foreign ownership isn't a big issue, but for a lot of us, English footy has moved far from the game and lifestyle we grew up with, and at least our owner understands that. Wednesday's owner put up prices, and stuck his own name on their shirt, which is distasteful at the least, and a potential trick to evade financial fair play regulations at worst.

Hope it helps!

Reasons to be a Blade:
You're catching us at a very promising time right now. As others have mentioned, our chairman, captain and manager are all Blades, born and bred in the city. This is incredibly rare for a football club, and in England, the home of football, it's exactly the kind of thing to be taken advantage of in our football culture. Our ground, the oldest professional league ground in the world, is in the heart of the city and next to numerous pubs which are almost as old as your country :p

Wednesday on the other hand, have a foreign owner, manager and a playing staff stocked with international journeymen. Nothing wrong with foreign talent mind, it's just that you're much less likely to experience a real connection to the club this way. Hillsborough can feel a bit.. quiet.. on the weekends, not much atmosphere around the ground (Or in it, haha)

The spirit amongst Blades fans and team alike is incredibly high right now, more so than at any time in recent memory. This is all because we have a new manager who has got us playing exciting, attacking football, and scoring goals by the bagful (Just look at the stats). In the likely scenario we get promoted, expect a packed Bramall Lane every week next season. We are currently getting close to capacity crowds in the 3rd tier of English football.

But yeah, I echo others thoughts. Go to a match at both grounds and see for yourself.

Is it a bad idea to buy a season ticket a couple of games into the season if I want a decent seat?

If you're thinking about Wednesday (fucking daft name for a football club, I think we'd all agree?) I'd advise you to apply for a season ticket now. According to Mark on Football Heaven (or was it Mark? Or maybe Mark?) Wendy would be getting 50k for every game if it wasn't for that pesky SYPD.

In Caaaarloss We Trooost.

The Sheffield blades play some awesome soccer ball if you want to see head kicks into the score bag, awesome offence a great goaltender and the shut out kings in defence it's the place to be. We get the go ahead goal and just keep putting the soccerball in the scorebag you won't see many games end zip zip

The south Barnsley owls suck dude

Redneck, Hick and all-round Good Ol' Boy Ted Hemsleys chads is the man to ask. He told met and married and American lady who found us on the Internet, fell in love with us , came and stayed.

If you can catch him between driving around in his pick up listening to C and W , a huntin' and drinking Bud Lite it might be nice to get the perspective of fellow Americans

Pros for United:

  • Cheaper season ticket
  • City centre location with decent pubs nearby
  • A grounded and hospitable fanbase
  • Watching Wilder's Red and White Wizards go blood and thunder for a win
  • Atmosphere - on it's day unmatched BUT we are still healing as a fanbase and this takes time!
Pros for the Snortbeasts:
  • They are Massive, oh and they sing at least 3 songs that other teams sang first.
Don't forget.......
  • History, we have the oldest football stadium in the word (although the derelict stadium at S6 makes it look like they have the original)
  • We were the first club to play under floodlights
  • We were the first club to be broadcast live on the wireless (radio)
  • We have one of the greatest a themes of all time
  • We are not deluded
  • We have a film based on us (When Satdi Comes)
  • We have a TV series based on us (Ripping Yarns)
  • We have celebrities from Lord of the rings, Full Monty, world class boxers and athletes et al
  • We stand up to the cheats in the Football Association
  • We were lost for a few seasons, now we are found and its Europe in 5

NYkr how's your research coming along over on the dark side by the way ?

Theres lots of emotional and historic reasons to pick the blades.

But the practical ones of cost and location are the reasons why you should pick them.

Go to both and see what you think.

Although the Blades does have advantages. City centre location, cheaper tickets, down to earth fans and better atmosphere.

Could have a word with your compatriot Jim Phipps. He's from the US and a big Blade.

Amen to that brother! :)

If you want to go to the games as a neutral, watch all 24 teams and make no connection with the club, go to Wednesday.

If you want to fall in love at first sight of the pitch, support the team, make some friends, go crazy when the ball hits the back of the net and really hurt when we lose, come to the Blades.

Either way you'll get some cracking games next season, if we all cheer Fulham on to playoff success you'll get to see a Steel City Derby and your team of choice against Yorkshire rivals Leeds, Barnsley, Huddersfield and possibly Hull and Bradford, not to mention tasty games against Derby and Forest.

Well you put United first in your post so there you go, also you mention hillbillies? Who the fuck are they? Unless you mean the hillbilly pigs? Mmm I quite like the way you are thinking, welcome aboard pal, already looking forward to playing the hillbilly pigs next year, old Jethro tango will be turning red

I'm an incomer to Sheffield myself, having come from the far away land of Derbyshire, and I can vouch for the fact that, given a choice, there is really no choice!

Did I choose to watch Wednesday? I did not, for several reasons

1 Bramall Lane is in the heart of the city, with pubs and chip shops galore. Hillsborough is in the middle of nowhere.
2 The lovely red glow from the seats and stands is vastly superior to the icy cold blue at SWFC
3 United's fans are friendlier. We are the People's Club. The Owls live in a fool's paradise in which they are (quote) massive. But they are not.
4 It's cheaper to get in at the Lane (even more so if you are over 60, which I'm sure you aren't, but I am)
5 The Hillsborough stewards are the dregs of the city. Vicious, petty, humourless bullies.
6 The Hillsborough Disaster. Corruption on a grand scale involving the City Council and SWFC contributed to the deaths
7 The Hillsborough Disaster (part 2). SWFC have never admitted their part, took decades to provide a memorial and when they finally did so it's just a shitty bit of concrete across a river from the stadium
8 Great football and atmosphere at the Lane. It's not guaranteed, mind, but when it's good it's brilliant
9 Everyone I made friends with was (and is) a Blade
10 When things are bad you get gallows wit and humour at the Lane, missiles at Hillsborough

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" That's Bramall Lane for thee.

You'll get a cheaper season ticket if you buy it in advance. Ours will certainly be cheaper than the other team's. And I suspect you'll prefer the Blades.

Think point 6. Might needs a little legal moderation, after all it's them that exaggerate not us!

Hello everyone,
Wasn't quite sure where to put this but I was looking to get your help.
I am currently a college student in New York and have been given an opportunity which requires me to live in Sheffield for a year. I love football/soccer (don't hate on the word, it originates from Oxford University) and have been a member of New York Red Bulls since its foundation as well as playing all my life. Anyway, one of the main things I am looking forward to is getting a season ticket at one of the Sheffield clubs, either United or Wednesday, but I am having trouble deciding who to go for. When I was looking into this last year it seemed an obvious decision to choose Wednesday due to the Championship football on offer although that benefit is likely to be equalled as United look set to be promoted.
Why am I here wasting your time on the forum? Basically I want to get the fans opinion to try and persuade me and give me a reason to choose their club. Due to other sports teams I support in the US (red and white colours) and the fact Bramall Lane will be a bit easier to access from where I am staying I have decided to ask you guys first.
I appreciate any advice given though please keep comments constructive, saying things like they are pigs (I know you call each other that) and hillbillies isn't an argument. Match day experience, fan culture, players, history would be preferable.
Thanks

We have a long-standing tradition of welcoming non-natives into our family. Indeed, many members of this forum came to us as outsiders and stayed as Blades. That should tell you all you need to know.

That's emphatically not the case on the other side. The only conversation you'll get in the company of Wednesday fans is a load of humourless proclamations of how "great" they are. Seriously, you'll be left bored and cold.

If you get the chance, get in touch with some of us on here and spend a match day in our company. You won't look back I assure you.

You've answered your own question and I think you're just seeking confirmation, BDTBL is much easier to access for you.

The other major factor is Chris Wilder.

You're going to get a far greater insight into a Sheffield football club/football in England and what it means to us from Wilder rather than Carlos.

Cheers for the reply. I don't expect anyone to care about my choice in the end and yes ultimately it is my choice but I appreciate the fans opinion and frankly that's the best way I consider going about deciding.

Let me know who you choose and we can have a chat, I'm currently doing a radio piece about people who live abroad for a period of time and embrace local culture.

United is the only real Sheffield club.

Look on Google maps, the other lot are just South of Barnsley.

Also, think Flash Boy Cowboys (them) or Blue Collar Packers or Steelers (Us).

Bramall Lane is the home of football, the oldest professional football stadium in the world.

We have a Chairman who has been a Blade all his life (Kevin McCabe), we have a Manager who has been a Blade all his life (Chris Wilder), we have a team captain who has been a Blade all his life (Billy Sharp).

They have a Chairman who is a fish billionaire from Thailand, a Manager who is a second-rate ex player from Portugal and a captain from The Netherlands.

If you want to be a part of British football you choose.

By the way, I'm a Raider and my son's a Bill, but I like the Giants and I hate the Jets!

I thought you made many valid and reasonable points of view , until that last bit about the Jets .
Cheeky fucker .;)

Get yourself settled in your student accommodation before making a decision . Trying to get help off a forum is a bit backward . Get here , go to both grounds and make your mind up .

The friends you make will influence your decision unless you are Billy no mates , sad bastard who will be going to the match on your own .

Be grown up not a kid .

Keeping natural bias out of my mind for the benefit of debate it's worth mentioning that our season ticket will be notably cheaper so from a purely financial standpoint it's worth going for United.

Also I hear that Wednesday fans spend their downtime torturing kittens and not tipping waiters when they give good service so there's that too...
