Hello everyone,
Wasn't quite sure where to put this but I was looking to get your help.
I am currently a college student in New York and have been given an opportunity which requires me to live in Sheffield for a year. I love football/soccer (don't hate on the word, it originates from Oxford University) and have been a member of New York Red Bulls since its foundation as well as playing all my life. Anyway, one of the main things I am looking forward to is getting a season ticket at one of the Sheffield clubs, either United or Wednesday, but I am having trouble deciding who to go for. When I was looking into this last year it seemed an obvious decision to choose Wednesday due to the Championship football on offer although that benefit is likely to be equalled as United look set to be promoted.
Why am I here wasting your time on the forum? Basically I want to get the fans opinion to try and persuade me and give me a reason to choose their club. Due to other sports teams I support in the US (red and white colours) and the fact Bramall Lane will be a bit easier to access from where I am staying I have decided to ask you guys first.
I appreciate any advice given though please keep comments constructive, saying things like they are pigs (I know you call each other that) and hillbillies isn't an argument. Match day experience, fan culture, players, history would be preferable.
Thanks

Pros for United:

  • Cheaper season ticket
  • City centre location with decent pubs nearby
  • A grounded and hospitable fanbase
  • Watching Wilder's Red and White Wizards go blood and thunder for a win
  • Atmosphere - on it's day unmatched BUT we are still healing as a fanbase and this takes time!
Pros for the Snortbeasts:
  • They are Massive, oh and they sing at least 3 songs that other teams sang first.

United are what you would call a 'proper' club. Proper atmosphere, proper fans, proper football (these days). We boast the worlds oldest professional football stadium and a fine city centre location. The universal hatred of the pigs isnt unfounded. Their arrogance can only be ignored if youve been raised your entire life to embrace it. Come to the lane lad the future is bright, the future is red and white ;)

If you like mixing with deluded up their own arses arrogant cunty types then a future at Pigsboro awaits you.

If you like mixing with a salt of the earth, passionate, realistic and incredibly loyal set of fans who tell it how it is and demand that their team gives their all win, lose or draw, then it's fair to say that you should get your self down to the Lane.

Your choice and no one is gunna try and persuade you one way or another as ultimately it's your choice (and to be honest I don't give a rats shit which team you choose to support) but i will give you one last bit of advice. If you choose Weds over Utd you would always regret it. We are different gravy to the pigs from S6.

United is the only real Sheffield club.

Look on Google maps, the other lot are just South of Barnsley.

Also, think Flash Boy Cowboys (them) or Blue Collar Packers or Steelers (Us).

Bramall Lane is the home of football, the oldest professional football stadium in the world.

We have a Chairman who has been a Blade all his life (Kevin McCabe), we have a Manager who has been a Blade all his life (Chris Wilder), we have a team captain who has been a Blade all his life (Billy Sharp).

They have a Chairman who is a fish billionaire from Thailand, a Manager who is a second-rate ex player from Portugal and a captain from The Netherlands.

If you want to be a part of British football you choose.

By the way, I'm a Raider and my son's a Bill, but I like the Giants and I hate the Jets!

Cheers for the reply. I don't expect anyone to care about my choice in the end and yes ultimately it is my choice but I appreciate the fans opinion and frankly that's the best way I consider going about deciding.

The logical decision would be to choose us, based on the location and the financial aspect, seeing as you'll be a student and presumably not the richest if that's what you're doing over here.

But it's down to you to visit both grounds and see how you feel. There'll be no angst against you if you choose them, because you'll probably never show your face on here again if you do :D

All I'll say is we're a great bunch. A bit pessimistic at times, but only because we've had to put up with a LOT of shit over the past 10 years. That'll do things to the strongest football fan and it takes a while to shake off.

Enjoy your time in Sheffield. The beer here is the best in the country.

Are you from NYC?

I met some Redskins from New York at the game in London last year and they always go to Redemption on 2nd and 53rd to watch the games when they are at home. Do you know it?

I love New York, probably been 15?times, going for my birthday (64!!!) in September. Always hire bikes, always go to the Village Vanguard, any recommendations for a Blue Collar guy and his wife!

A word of warning, Sheffield United is a virus without cure,

Once a Blade Always a Blade.

Look at Jim Phipps from your side of the pond on LinkedIn.

Before you can decide you need to experience "match day" at both, infact while you're at it, take in Rotherham, Chesterfield, Barnsley and Doncaster too, I think you'll be able to choose much easier having taken in a variety of different atmospheres, meeting different sets of fans, watching different styles of football, only you can make the decision, only you know what your looking for and like, you know your answer on here, asking this question will be the blades, it's an obvious answer, as there is a "slight dislike" towards the other lot over in south Barnsley.
The thing with most blades is, we're born blades, it's not a choice or a decision we've made, we are who we are, we are blades, we are red and white, we are united!!!
We haven't decided to support utd cos our mate does, or the bigger boys at school do, it's not cos we want to fit in or look like we know what we're on about even though we don't!
I wouldn't expect you to understand what I'm getting at, you need to experience it for yourself, only you can decide, but remember, you can only choose 1 and you only get that choice once!!!
Get it right pal!!

We definitely have the "support the team your born into" mentality in the US, not so much with soccer/football but in the NFL and often college football. Unfortunately the time I come to Sheffield is pretty much bang on when the season starts. Is it a bad idea to buy a season ticket a couple of games into the season if I want a decent seat?

It's 2 am here as well, so you can gather that Blades don't bother with trivia such as sleep!

You going to be working out of one of the Universities in Sheffield?

Me and my Mrs both went to Sheffield Uni a long time ago, back in the 70's, but it has always had the number 1 rated Student Union in the U.K. (The Student Union is basically the centre of student social life in a U.K. University).

Matey, people buy half season tickets, you need to decide which stand you wana be in first, that's a choice in itself, many don't like the kop, many love it, the south is probably the preferred by many holders, then there's the family stand for the least swearing sort of!!?!!
You should be able to get a decent seat wherever you choose, the Westfield corner apparently has the best views but it's, again, it's a personal thing.

What's up, do you think he would rather watch them than utd!?!?
Sure your not blue n white behind that computer screen!?!?

Our season tickets are likely to be in high demand if (when) we get promoted. However, there is the possibility that we will sell season tickets in the Bramall Lane Upper Tier Stand for the first time for many years. If that happens then the view from there is fantastic. Go for it.

Season tickets are liable to be on sale pretty soon for this year's holders to renew, and soon after for General Sale. If you can, get yourself centrally behind the goal upstairs on Bramall Lane and live the dream.

Another benefit, our tickets are much cheaper than those on the Dark Side!

I'm not keen on some of the choices you have given to NYkr - Sanders or Trump is a bit like Devil or Deep Blue Sea - and I'm a Targaryan (Dragon Rider) myself - although of course Ned Stark is a Director or something equivalent of Sheffield United.

This feels like the point where the thread ends to me...

Targaryan eh? Mad as a sack of monkeys, incestuous by tradition, divine right to rule...their sigil isn't blue, by any chance? ;)
