This was said on RS tonite by a piglet.

I dont think we are,i see it as natural progression of the team, season after season.

People said excatly the same in 1990 and the bubble will burst etc. That didn't rurn out badly did it!? I don't think we're overachieving in terms of the quality of the squad is very good and we play as a team. I don't see another team in our league with a better defence or attack, although I see players who are as good as what we have. I'm going to add centre mids as well. Is there a better partnership than Norwood and Fleck?!

Where we have overachieved is Wilder being able to assemble this squad with the budget we have. That is the unbelievable thing and full credit to Wilder and co. Signing Fleck, O'Connell, Baldock, McGoldrick for the free or small fees we payed has been remarkable. Norwood at less than £2m is a steal quite frankly too. And even Egan at £4m (yes I know its in stages) but I don't see a better centre half in this league. He's the best centre back I've seen play for us - Jags was largely in midfield or right back.

No one, including the majority of our fans, thought we'd be doing this well, so in terms of expectations: yes, were over-achieving.

In terms of finances, while the budget has improved, it's still relatively small, especially when compared to the divisions wealthiest clubs. So that on that front we're over-achieving as well.

I don't see how overachieving can ever be seen as a bad thing or a criticism. We are all brought up to try our absolute best and aim for the stars. How the fuck can you ever have any success if you don't over achieve from time to time?

Give me a team pushing themselves to the max at all times, and doing much better than many expect, rather than over a bunch of disinterested, over rated, underachievers.....sound familiar to anyone?

We are if you compare the budgets of all the Championship clubs, but that is only a part of football
There are such variables as the Management of the club the sort of players you have in your squad both in technical ability and character which helps build team spirit, players that want to play for the club and the Manager
We know unless you spend your money wisely spending tens of millions of £s doesnt guarantee anything its like the old adage on paper team X should beat team Y but football is not played on paper and never will be

That Calum who started it is 100% Pork Chippy.

He was also on after the Villa game calling for Wilder’s head, and toinght he reckoned he doesn’t want us to go us because we’ll just get hammered ever week. He feckin reeks of it pal, and my guess is the Pig who came on backing him up was either him again or his mate. Sounded very similar, even talks with a grunt, are you reading this ya Piggy wanker? :p

I think we've had this before as to what "overachieving" actually is.

Is it doing better than your budget would suggest, in which case great, carry on.

Is it because you don't have lots of "name" or ex-Prem players, again who gives a toss?

Or is it something that is unsustainable (a bit like the Bolton and the Pigs earlier in the season and Derby now where their expected goals were way under their results and hey presto, the results collapsed), in which case then it is something to think about. I think we all are a tad concerned about what happens if we don;t go up with budgets, Wilder and Knill and our est players.

It's the pig's defence mechanism cos they know we are miles better than them and more likely to get to the prem quicker than them, our team is very skillful and it's knitted together like a well oiled machine.

Momentum now dead, overachieving still. If we win Monday, it’s this seasons getout.

If you look at everything - finances, players, squad, experience etc etc it makes you wonder how a little side like ours can go from winning the pub league two seasons ago, to being sat in second in the Championship above some apparently much bigger and better sides.

So on the face of it you’d say we were over achieving. But reality is that the club, from top to bottom are pulling in the same direction, despite the ownership issues.

Central to all this is Wilder, he’s not a complicated manager, but places high demands on his players. Fitness, workrate, desire and commitment. On top of this he’s picked up some technically excellent players. We’re a team

It makes you wonder why everyone doesn’t do what we do... so are we over achieving or are others under achieving?

Last word goes to our neighbours. Big names, good experience but it’s all in the past. They’re everything we’re not and I’m glad.

That thread aged really well didn’t it? :D

Credit to Wilder and co for proving most of us wrong!

Over-achieving can be getting a group of individuals together to form a team which is better than the sum of its parts. It can depend on team spirit, balance of different skills, belief in the coaching staff and tactics, etc. Wilder appears to be good at this, and it is best to regard it as a compliment.

One of the callers nailed it.

A player/squad can’t ‘over’ achieve, he/they can only play to their maximum ability so all they’re doing is achieving.

It’s only possible to under achieve.

I think we are overachieving in expectations.

At the start of the season, any of our fans or any pundit suggesting that we would be where we are now would have been accused of being at the deludanol by the rest of us.

That said, I think we are achieving perfectly as a unit across the playing staff, manager, coaches and fitness team.

Underachieving in the boardroom and still room for improvement on the terraces....

Yes, it was obviously pigs on the wind-up. Obvious apart from to the RS wanker who indulges those planks. Classic Wednesday bullshit: 'I take my hat off to Yoo-ni-ted, but...'

Overachieving?

"If you've never failed, you haven't been trying hard enough."

I voted for yes. Do you think we would have the same success with the same players under a different manager? It all comes around, the porkers will have their time in the sun, we're currently having our time to shine after a stint in L1.

I see what you mean, but a team can be more than the sum of its parts. The 1989-90 promotion team was like that, for example. I think the present team shares this trait.

We're over-achieving on budget and supposed values of players in other terms that's all. Given our performances last season and the fact we've improved the squad, as others have said, that could have been expected.

Other teams have under-achieved which also affects the situation.

In relation to the players wage bill, we are roughly 15th highest in the league, it has to be said Yes we are
Generally speaking the more money you spend the higher up the table you finish, like the top 6 in the Premier League
What we now have is momentum, team spirit, desire, hard work and endeavour
(Heard that before from some where ha ha)
Clearly selling Brooks although disappointing at the time has helped funding in strengthen the side and fortunately we have bought in some excellent players this season instead of buying players from division 1

It’s not a clear question.

Over achieving? Based on what?

Budget....yes massively over achieving, that’s probably what the caller on Radio Sheffield meant
History/ status....of course not, we’re spent 2 thirds of our history in the top flight
Players.....probably yes...but they haven’t factored in the Wilder effect...so no.

Over achieving suggests the current good run is temporary because the players are performing better than their natural level.
However this isn’t the case, we’ve been consistent for over 2 years, under par performances are very rare these days under Wilder.

As we are constantly near the top of any expected goals table our “achievement” is totally consistent with our overall play.

Overachievement implies results that are unsustainable with your general performance - such as Bolton at the start of the season.

Every sensible analysis proves absolutely that we are getting exactly what we deserve - we reap what we sow.

Magic Times

Steady progression for me.
Though I don't buy into the argument that our budget is a very low one.
Egan and Norwood commanded typical championship fees and I don't think for a second Duffy Norwood Fleck etc would still be here if they hadn't been offered substantial wage increases in the last 18 months.I think Colin said we are paying all of Madine's wages which wont be insignificant. To me we've made excellent progress taking little gambles like Madine and Hogan. If we don't go up they go back to their parent clubs and our little gamble hasn't jeopardised the future of the club. We are overachievers when you compare our budget to Villa but we aren't overachieving to the extent Leicester did to win the Premier League.
