We're just gearing up to jog on for the U23s away at Burnley this afts. Being played at Curzon Ashton. Kick off 2pm. Jordan Doherty, David Parkhouse & Oli Greaves were back on the park from their loan spells last time out. Harry Sheppeard (Guiseley) & Stephen Mallon (Derry City) have been loaned out in recent days. And, there is an important FA Youth Cup game at The Lane on Wednesday, which might impact on team selection. Let's get at it.....

Mallon seems a name ive seen for a few years but never heard him being close to first team. No chance you reckon phil?

I'd be on to HITC as they're reporting this as a story based on your own tweets.

Personally. I thought that was POOR. Although I note my account is far more negative than the official report. Disjointed. Very little link up nor build up. And, the Carrier Bag Firm now officially have no idea what's going on with David Parkhouse. I've tried to pick out positives. And, it was only two nil. Anyway. Switch your Bile Tolerance to HIGH & have a go....

Broadly, I like Mallon. He's had a lot of injuries over the years. And, he's recently been on loan at Central Coast in Australia. Because he's a flair player. Good close ball skills. My preference has been to persevere & see if he/us can make it work. And, that's sort of what they're doing by sending him to Derry City. (I haven't seen him play since he returned from AUS). But, I have found him frustrating over the years. I just don't think he's kicked on and turned himself into a player who takes games by the scruff of the neck & makes an impact. It's very very difficult for players to break into a Premier League squad. Putting everything together, I doubt Stephen will make it with us. Certainly, he'll need to go to Derry & light that league up if he's got a future with us.

And I quote;

"NO BEER"

WTF is going on? Didn't you even have an emergency bottle of Gold Label in one of your carrier bags?

Questions to be asked in the House....

I'm at a low ebb beerwise. Found myself "drinking the same one" a few times recently. I'm worried I'm on the way to Carling or Dark Fruits. Verdant Tap Takeover on Thursday should see me back in the saddle. Little known fact - one of the CBF used to work for Whitbreads and ran the Gold Label account. If you needed a bottle, a case, a pallet or a truckload, he was the Go To Guy.....

It is a concern that we don't have anyone and I mean anyone even remotely close to competing for even a place on the bench in the FA Cup for example.

Our speed of ascension at 1st team level up through the leagues has meant the academy/youth team has not been a priority, not been able to keep up or is failing to match the standards it set previously. Maybe the changes to the academy system and is being cat 2 means we cannot attract talent like the more highly ranked academies can.

The departure of Binnion and a few others suggests that the club know this is an area of concern. There is none coming through at all.

We seem to have a scattergun approach to the u23s and u18s with triallists coming in aplenty and new signings from Man Utd, Leeds etc. Even Sheppeard and York came from other clubs in the last few years. Both of these are 20 this year too so not sure they are exactly kids.

They seem to be more inclined to snaffle released players from other academies than bring our own through. Maybe this is a resignation ours are not good enough in comparison to some others. Worrying we believe even released players from others are better than many of those at our u18s.

The more senior u23s seem to have been around ages and time will be up for many at the end of this season.

The likes of Parkhouse, Mallon snd Doherty will depart for certain. Non are even close to consideration for us and have had several loans of varying success at poor standards of football. Slater too and Greaves also will have to find new clubs. Slater has really gone backwards and has rarely played at Scunny. Greaves was publically panned by the Barrow manager for his work ethic.

We have a lot of lads on loan Eastwood, Tyler Smith and Slater/Eastwood
Non are regulars or have convinced at clubs they are with. We have had others in non league like Greaves and Graham who have also struggled even at that level.

I am surprised Smith and Graham got new deals with us. They are not even regulars in League One/National League and I think they will just be loaned out again next season. Maybe United see a chance but Smith is 21 now? Graham could not get in a struggling Notts County team.

I am painting a bleak picture and granted there are years when no-one comes through for a period but we literally have noone even that close. Only Norrington Davies could be deemed a success and he is only at Rochdale. Most other Prem teams have young players on loan at even Champ level.

Our Academy has been superb and produced a plethora of stars but recent times the production has been insufficient. The new owners will have to address this as we cannot expect the club to enter the transfer market for huge fees and rely on CWs brilliance. Every PL club bar none has players coming through or youth options from the academy. We do not.

In a tremendous few years for the club where the first team has rightly been the priority; this area of the club needs addressing. Whether by looking at utilising the international youth market (like some of the bigger clubs do) or improving how we recruit domestically even at a younger level; they will need to make changes in my
opinion.

Will take Lester and Hughes time I am sure as both relatively new. Staying in the PL may buy them a bit of time initially as Wilder will want ready made talent who can push the first teamers now but over 2-3 years I feel we need to see some improvements in the recruitment / development of our academy players.

What is the answer (or suggestions) to this ? Have the first team just grown far too quick for the academy and all resource has been invested into that ? “It’ll catch up eventually” type thing.

Do we not scout for U23 players or have a poor U23 backroom staff ? Sack the manager ?

It’s certainly the best way to make/save money now we are in the Premier League and I’m sure it’s been referenced by Wilder and the Prince as an area to improve on.

Well. Academy players are a loooooong term project, not short term. But to address some of what you say. The new management/coaching regime Jack Lester & Andrew Hughes were appointed AFTER the start of this season. Four of the 11 starters this afternoon were brought in by them. The club are making changes. Those players must have been scouted.

One off Cup games can be a tricky indicator of quality. Anyone can beat anyone on the night, etc. But ...... I feel we'll get an overall assessment of the health of our Academy on Wednesday night. When we play Category 1 Academy Fulham in the FA Youth Cup. They are the 4th ranked U18 team in the country this season - behind Liverpool, Chelsea & Man City. When we played Cat 1 Derby County last year, we were well beaten & there looked a wide gap in quality.

Graham was doing well at Notts until his injury, they liked him.

Always interesting to hear your views on the goings on at the academy and how the youngsters are progressing (or not as appears to be the case at the moment).

Do you think it would be worth investing in the academy to improve it to Cat 1 and with it the facilities (new training complex at Norton??) to enable it to compete with other Cat 1 academies in the area (Derby, Man C, Man U) when it comes to recruitment and put it at an advantage over Cat 2 academies e.g. Barnsley, Leeds, the Massive?

New training complex at Norton?
Have we plans to move the academy?
