Lots of talk about Madine vs McGoldrick, long ball and no Duffy etc. I didn’t like the way we played but it may be that Wilder knew what was coming and set up accordingly. Pigs packed midfield and, to be fair, pressed every ball. If we had tried to play through midfield in the early stages of the game, I reckon we would have struggled. Knocking it long kept them on the back foot and took midfield out of the equation meaning they had to to play from their own back third of the pitch and we could cope with that.
Final 20 when legs were going we changed tactics and got the ball down which worked well. I’d still have liked to see Duffy but I’m pretty sure Wilder will count that as job done. Big disappointment for me was the corner count but we didn’t make a clear chance from any of them.
All in all we dodged a tricky one and move forward. We know we can play better than that and I’m still confident of autos

It's a good argument, maybe we had to accept a scruffy game like Oldham away.

Still wish we'd have tried though; McGoldrick and Duffy have not lacked form and got dropped, they've just been pushed by other good players. They have earned a place off the bench at least.

I didn't like the Basham to midfield change with 30 minutes to go, but for me his biggest mistake was starting Dowell over McGoldrick, as it appears he knew what sort of game it would be.

And I don't know why he didn't use a final sub either.

He was pleased with a point. Fancy that.

He bottled it . He didnt want to lose. Simple as, But it will cost us 2nd place. Its now all on the Leeds away game. I know which game i would have rather gone for it more. They were there for the taking. Im gutted. Because Wilder the fan, took over his thoughts. And went through to the players , I love the guy, and he has worked wonders for us. But his fans head tonight has cost us

Agree with all of that.

In terms of our usual way to play, we only really started to turn that on when McGoldrick came on. I'd have liked to see a bit more of that, you could sense the pigs' nervousness all around the ground at that point. I'd have also liked to see Duff come on.

I love how, despite being top of the form guide, it still just takes an away point to convert all the burger flippers into master tacticians.

You’re not alone, so don’t take it personally.

The shout box is that way>>>>>>

Jellybabies.

For the avoidance of doubt a point away from home, indeed any one result, won’t ‘cost us second place’ neither is it ‘now all on the Leeds game’.

A remarkably high bollocks to content ratio from our excitable, attention-seeking contributor.

If any away point "costs us" this season it will be being 3-0 up at Villa with 10 minutes left and only getting a point. That's what you call a proper missed opportunity. Not drawing away from home to your main rivals in horrendous conditions.

You know what's really gonna fuck some people up? We are going to lose from now until the end of the season.

Taking zero off Swansea won't look great in the grand scheme of things when they finish bottom half.

Still in our own hands and got an excellent chance these next two games to ramp up the pressure. Need to be untra professional though. Lot of respect for what Paul Warne has done.

That pitch looked full of pock marks I don't know if it was from the heavy rain but it looked in horrible shape which would have benefitted them.

IMO that's the toughest fixture out of the way, we can now relax (relatively) and just get on with it. OK, Leeds will be a tough game for different reasons but the pressure is on them for that one and will be completely different to last night from our perspective.

We can pull apart the performance, question the tactics , subs etc but I think we just take the point, accept that that was always going to be the kind of game it was and move on. Again we showed great discipline and defended well against a very niggly but typically well organised Steve Bruce team.

11 games to go, we're in great shape, on we go...................

What is worrying is that the pigs high press stopped us playing through midfield forced our two attacking CB to stay back for much of the game and forced us long, then once we went long we failed to win the second balls in the space the high press should then present.

Why I’m worried is in two weeks we go to Leeds where Bielsa is the Godfather of the high press and will do similar just with more quality to back it up when our play breaks down. We need to come up with a better tactic than just hoof it to Gary.

That point away is much harder won than a point will be against teams with nothing to play for at the end of the season. The atmosphere would be so much worse had pigs nicked it but in reality our chances not much changed. Two more performances like reading and we go to elland road in great shape for a true 6 pointer.

I have woke up with the same feelings unfortunately. We through our big chance away. To beat em in there own back yard again.Of course it ain't over. But we could and should have won that game. Which would have put us in a stronger postion going into the rest of the season, It's now in Leeds hands for 2nd spot.

We play before Leeds Saturday. Win and were back to 2nd. Lets then see how Leeds respond to that bit of pressure. Last 2 rounds of fixtures they've played before us.

Its in our hands as much as it is Leeds.

Just enjoy the ride. What will be will be.

No it's not. If we win every game we go up.

Only reason I don’t think he used the last sub was that Jack appeared to be struggling for the last 15 or so. Didn’t wanna risk putting ash Duffy on if Jack was gonna go down and now be able to carry on & similarly didn’t wanna being Jack off and disrupt defence if he could carry on

As soon as we changed tactics and played it down and passed it on the deck we pulled them all over the place and yes McGoldrick helped that but let’s not forget Cranie who opened them up like a tin can. I would start Cranie next time the lads overlapping and his energy skill and pace is excellent

Agree. This game was crying out for someone to show some composure and put their foot on the ball. The way we started the second half was x10000 better because Wilder seemed to get this message through to the players. But, either way, that's a strategy that calls for one of McGoldrick or Duffy over Dowell. So the decision not to start either, and then bring Cranie on for Dowell, was way off for me. Oh well. No manager gets it right every time. And Wilder is doing such a good job and has banked a lot of credit that we can just let it go. This game won't define our season.

I am glad someone has started a thread about the tactics.

Wednesday main aim was to stop us playing and getting overlaps - so well done for achieving that.
They tried to close us down at every opportunity and it generally worked - again, well done to them.

But when teams do it - how should we respond.

Hindsight is a wonderful tool, but Wednesday were always going to keep it tight and we should have had Duffy and McG on. We should have gone 3421 and played through them in midfield.

If we go with the same tactics v Leeds, they'll kill us - not only do they close you down and hassle, but they then break at speed - exactly what Wednesday didn't do last night.

McG is the key in games like that - he is all over the place and drops off the front when needed. We've seen it all season and it's ideal playing against teams like last night.

We need better tactics going to Bellend Road in 12 days time.

Still don't understand the lack of Duffy. We've got this far playing a particular style with a particular set of players. If it aint broke then it don't need fixing.

Think you make a valid point there. Now that CW has more options to pick from, he seems a manager who has horses for courses - he needs to pick the right horses though.

Surely Duffs and McG will start on Saturday.

If we drop one or two points because Wilder is a fan, then I’m happy with that.
I think we have more chance against Leeds because we’ll be able to play our normal game, which rarely happens in a derby.

It's also still in our hands because we still have to play Leeds again.
