Treacy v Cotterill

You seem to be refering to the tackle in the FA cup against Middlesborough?
I'm refering to his clearance this season off the line for stoke i cannot remember who against.
I never said we should rely on our striker catching up with players through on goal but if they were in a position closest to the player through on goal would you expect him to try?
Question: little Jamie Ward does not come and defend in our box at set pieces but how many times have you seen him work from front to back and then back to front?

Yes, thought you meant the Middlesbrough tackle. Of course anyone in a position to clear should clear. Yes I have seen Ward work hard.

Not everybody are complete players though, and it's the task of the manager to get the balance just right, to compose a team of players with complementary skills who as a unit works well defensively and offensively. I think Highbury's suggested team is a good one, though it probably requires a strong/tall back four.

I wish it wasn't the always the case but I think success in modern football is about athleticism - and that includes height and muscle as key ingredients. The side mentioned above excluding Daz looks exciting and I'd like to see it but I think you need Barca type of players to succeed with that formation and size of player.

For what it's worth, I think Treacy has a lovely delivery and can really ping a ball. I like him and prefer him to Cotterill.

I've spent most of the morning with a fan of Blackburn and a fan of Wigan who took turns to mock both of them but both were of the opinion that both were inconsistant, no good at defensive duties but not good enough going forward to have this overlooked, and deemed "failures" at 20.

The latter attitude is a bit scary when you think about it.

like Highbury's team and formation but lets not try to take away players overall responsibility.

when cotterill was at his best he had young kyle naughton playing behind him.. naughton was good enough that he could often work on his own without cover as cotterill isn't the best tackler.. who cares.. he is supposed to be a bloody winger.. put a decent fullback behind him and he is quality.. like i said earlier . .he is the ONLY player who can kick the ball properly on the team.

Remember Chris Eagles goal for Burnley at the lane? Cotts fault got in Naughton's way so it is important to learn to work with and on your defencive duties.

Or at the back end of the season when we played him on the left in order to accomodate Halford on the right. He had no problem playing in front of Naysmith and still got the crosses in despite being on his "wrong side".

He can beat a man and he can deliver a cross. I like that in a winger, indeed I would consider it essential. How many goals would Keith Edwards have scored if we'd dropped Colin Morris in order for a more defensive winger?

I think Edwards' problem with Cotts is definitely down to his time with Morris. In the 25 odd years since their heyday, we've had very few players in the Morris mould, certainly none that were as consistent (I seem to remember Sir Keith had a similar problem with Nuddy).

Changing tact, I'm sure Chedders would have done well in that team and similarly, Sir Keith wouldn't have had a prayer in this team.

And therein may lie the rub. In Cotts we see a throwback to the age when wingers were there simply to terrorise defenders and weren't judged on how many lung bursting runs back to their own box they made.
I think what really annoys me is that some can forgive Monty for not having a creative bone in his body because he "get's stuck in" and yet don't seem capable of doing the opposite with players who can't tackle but can play.

Couldn't agree more. Add to that the 'don't lose 1st, win 2nd' philosophy that many (including ours) managers seem to adopt and it's not hard to see why the game has changed so much and certain types of players will struggle.

Found this on the OS, don't know how reliable/ up to date they are though:

Interesting to see how many assists Little has got given his very limited time on the pitch so far. I'd have Cotts starting every game though; he goes missing sometimes but, given a run of games, he'll get his confidence back and start creating goals again. I really hope he doesn't go in January.

OK, thought I'd have a look :-)

Minutes on the pitch this season;

Treacy 923
Cotts 510
Little 309

In the case of Cotts and Little, most of those are sub appearances and more often than not the game has been a lost cause by then !
