Whilst we're on the subject of the kop, I wonder if the redevelopment that was talked about over recent years is still afloat? The attached article is over a year old now.

I'm certain the Kop will see an upgrade at some point because the stand was only a temporary solution.
Sooner or later it will it will work its way nearer the top of the clubs priorities.

Obviously there's no rush for increased capacity just yet whilst in league 1.
And I also suspect the club are waiting on events surrounding "safe standing"
Apparently the PL are having a vote about it at their Chairmans meeting later this week.

I would love us to increase the Kop and put some safe standing in, probably the back half of the Kop increasing capacity to about 37-38,000, that would be fine for most situations.

I like many would love safe standing on the Kop, whether its the present Kop or not. For me its not even a discussion that is required re the safe standing vote. Its worked for years in Germany but that's not to underestimate the obvious sensitive nature post the Hillsborough tragedy.

I was there too. Got a Reight sun tan that day!

That season was known as 'The Great Escape' and it was Harry 'Houdini' Bassett. Me and four equally-lairy mates dressed up as Houdini - white long-johns, plastic chains etc. As half-time approached, we made our way down to the front and - at half-time - had a word with a copper who incredibly let us on the pitch and we took it in turns standing in the goalmouth while we had pictures taken by one of us on the penalty spot.

That kop was full of character (and characters!). As mentioned, halfway down a gangway ran across the width of the kop and a great view was to be had above the white wall at the John Street end - the one with the Army recruiting posters. Also in that corner was a death-trap stairwell down to street level. Pitch dark at night matches as the few lights had been smashed or not replaced. Onthe back was a big open-air staircase down to John Street. All the lads used to stand at the top from around 2 O'Clock, looking for any of 'their' fans who tried to infiltrate.

nice photo's. Gosh it looks a tip doesn't it? Today's ground is so much better, although certain sections are in need of redevelopment. I don't suppose anything will happen until we get back to the Prem - but that's only 2 years away now so no rush.

I think it was unfortunate, no, let me change "unfortunate" to "cheapskate", to put a new kop in with great big bloody pillars in the way. That's got to go imo. It's so old fashioned and totally unnecessary. I hope we resume the idea of having a 2 tier kop and make the bottom half standing only. That would be fab!

And later, maybe we can have a look again at John Street? I know it will disturb a lot of flat-capped folks if we start messing about with that but that side of the ground really lets the whole stadium down imo. It should be a huge cantilever stand imo, snuggling up to the lovely office block in the corner.

I fully suspect that you and I have bounced about and bumped into each other during goal celebrations without ever realising that we'd prat around on an internet forum together, 25 years later.
I used to stand in about the same spot in the days when you had to stand so far up to see over the bloody fence.

I know there's a lot of reminiscing about terracing but the ground was a dump back then and apart from the poles* on the kop, it's a top class ground today.

* apologies to any poles reading this forum.

Apart from the poles, a relic of bygone days I hasten to add, a new Kop, possibly tiered, empathetically designed to fit in with the existing stands and not stand out like a sore thumb, would provide United with exactly the feel to raise an already great ground to new heights........or summat like that. Agreed, but the law would need to be changed before we have standing areas again.

What a poxy picture!

No 'h' in Bramall Lane, do these people know nothing?
