He was very poor, but come on. Its the first game of the season, Paul walker was spot on with what he was saying on the radio. Its not the end of the world.

Also, Im fed up of hearing about Tonge and the 02-03 season, just drop it, if Tonge hadnt of had that season he wouldnt be getting anything like the stick he gets now. The following season he was again excellent, 04-05 season not so good, 05-06 season excellent when he came back into the side after christmas, premiership season IMO was one of our better performers in most games, and then last season he was no worse than anybody else under robson and then again excellent when blackwell was in charge.
He isnt kaka, he's michael tonge a championship player.

People expect too much of him, he is very inconsistent we all know that, the stick doesnt help.

Spot on Sharpy, I reckon. He can be better than he's shown, but Deco or Ronaldo, he ain't.

Yeah but you'd think he would be one of the best players at the club. He has spent his all career here, he knows what it's about.

I know, he would have been sold by now had he not had that season.

The thing is, we know it is in his ability to perform - so why isn't he? It's this which frustrates people. You can't say he hasn't been given his chances. One of the times he performed well was when he'd been dropped for a few games and told to buck his ideas up.

Tonge has played pretty poorly throughout pre-season and he hasn't got the bite to play in central midfield at the moment. If he could perform out on the wings, he'd be playing there. But as it stands, there are better players in front of him.

I want all our players to be worldbeaters... but when it just ain't happening, it's pointless saying they had an excellent season five years ago.

Sometimes people reach a point where they need a change, they have been somewhere too long and it has all become routine without spark and life. Happens in any walk of life and can happen to a footballer. Mr Tonge probably needs a new employer to stimulate his creativity once more, a new challenge in a new environment

How many more chances does a player get before it's realised that he's just not what we are after. He's not strong, he keeps his head down too often and when he does have a half decent game it's mainly due to poor opposition.

A replacement has to be found sooner rather than later, it's been this way for a few seasons now and I for one am getting a bit frustrated about it.

A wise assessment.

Blackie could be that new employer though. He played pretty well towards the end of last season when Blackie came back.

Whether that's against the background of some atrocious performances under Sornob, I don't know, but what I do know is that with the right people, he can do well again.

I'm not convinced we haven't got the ammunition to make him better again.

Tonge is like the lad you can take home to your mother (and I do intend to), he is quiet, doesn't create any problems, and you wouldn't mind him slamming ya sister.

Hendrie on the other hand is the one my mum told me about when I was younger :) rude, arrogant and a dirty boi

It shows on the pitch.

Perhaps if we take Mickey Tonge down town and get him to pull some fat munters and treat em like shit, we may get the old Tonge back.

Quoting what i said in another thread.

Michael Tonge has not been the same since the day Michael Brown left Tonge lost his confidence when Browny went it was Gutting to see Browny leave for Spurs but in actual fact it was like losing two players because Tonge has not been the same since he has been very inconsistent to say the least with a slight improvement when Blackie came back to the club.

For me Michael Tonge does not do the basics right for an Attacking midfielder he is not creative enough hence he rarely contributes with assists add to that he rarely scores any goals either which is just not good enough when you are a team chasing promotion to the premiership.

I have nothing against Tonge and would love to see the Michael Tonge of 2002/2003 that was being courted by Liverpool at the time back to them heady days.

The old Michael Tonge of 2002/2003 would take people on for fun and would shoot from all distances & angles since Brown left he has been like a Tortoise hiding in his shell because he very rarely runs at defenders or has a pop at goal hence why his assists & Goals return is very poor for an Attacking Midfielder.

If we had a better replacement lined up to replace Tonge that contributes more Goals and Assists then i would say 2 million is Good business.

Michael Tonge has not been good enough for a long time now and it is time Kevin Blackwell got some one who can be that midfield maestro that can score goals & provide plenty of assists & take free kicks etc IMO we need players like Liam Lawrence Stoke & Zoltan Gera West Brom from last season they scored bagfuls of goals & chipped in with plenty of Assists aswell which is what you need when you are chasing promotion to the premier league as you can't gain promotion without the supply to the strikers being there.

If Truth be told i can't believe Michael Tonge is still at the club to be honest as he has been too inconsistent since Brown left you only have to look at these stats to work that one out.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/players/stats?id=4763&&cc=5739

According to the stats Tonge has scored 24 goals in 297 appearances which in my book is simply not good enough especially when you look at other top players in this league & previous seasons take Liam Lawrence for example he scored 15 goals and contributed with 14 assists in one season and at the side of Tonges record it really does say something about how Inconsistent Michael Tonge has been.

IMO the player we should be looking at to replace Michael Tonge is Ben Watson who is available from palace for around 2m he is a quality young midfielder who can score plenty of Goals & provide plenty of assists and is also a dead ball specialist which is something that we need especially when our other dead ball specialist James Beattie is Injured.

I Just hope Kevin Blackwell sticks by his words earlier this summer aswell when he said that he was looking for Quality not Quantity and my opinion is that Ben Watson would be the man for us i just hope whoever Blackwell brings in does the Job for us.

Feel free to shoot me down it's Just my opinion and like i have said i have nothing against Michael Tonge i Just think he needs to move to pastures new to re-invigerate his career.

Well I thought Tonge was excellent today.

Worked very hard and covered some ground and had a few good efforts!

Now can he do it next week??

:)

Much improved yes,

However total forward passes all game = 2

However total forward passes all game = 2

Thankfully, you don't have to make a certain ratio of forward passes to have a good game :)

IMO I don't think he had a good game, just a bit better than his usual averageness.

Still need a replacement.

Tongey isnt consistent enough and doesnt put himself about as much as he should and if West Brom or whoever offer 2m he should be straight off IMO.

Tonge improved to a decent standard for the 2nd half of last season and kept it up in every game. Not dazzling, granted, but put in some good graft and weighed in with plenty of 7+ out of 10 performances.

And please, think about it before you argue that fact. SUFC sat pretty at the top of the form table for the remainder of the season after Robbo left. That doesn't happen without everybody achieving a decent level of performance consistency; Tonge included.
