I just hope we win not only do I hate the oinkers, but they will go into absolute meltdown, we will have endless weeks of joy and fun. Think it could be the end king pig Carlos too.

I don't think a Blades win will be the end of Carlos, he's recovered things quite well recently, but if its a heavy defeat that could prompt a knee jerk reaction at the Thai Sty

I don't see a heavy defeat for either side though

If I was looking at this as a neutral I'd have to say that I'd expect Wednesday to win this one, by a narrow margin.

There are several reasons why I'd think that:

  • They have spent much more money on the squad than United - which suggests they have better quality players. Certainly, most of their players have experience of playing at a higher level than our and are "big names" in some cases. A significant number of the United players are "lower league" players and comparatively unknown.
  • They have consistently shown over the past two seasons that they are one of the top teams at this level and have come very close to getting promotion. Whereas, United have been a division below and although they've started well it's too early to know whether they can really adapt with this set of players to life in the Championship.
  • They will have "home advantage" and the majority of the crowd cheering them on.
  • United are reportedly having "issues" and last week did not have one fit striker on the pitch.
But I'm not a neutral of course, I'm a Blade and so I look at it this way...

Despite spunkin loadsa monneh on big name has beens from the higher divisions they are still doing no better than us in the league up to now. Just because you pay a lot of money for a player doesn't mean that player is a better player than someone less expensive. This is a fundamental misunderstanding that most Wednesdayites seem to suffer from.

Coming close to promotion two seasons in a row doesn't mean that promotion is inevitable 3rd time around. Rather, there are many examples of teams who've been knocking on the door of promotion one season and fell out the bottom of that league the season after. Sheffield United for example. Not that I'm saying Wednesday will be relegated, I'm not, but I'm saying you can't just assume that they will be an automatic choice in the top 6 this season. They however, have a different view to this. They think it's inevitable that they are Top 6 minimum and the target is Top 2. So...it's not surprising they fully expect to beat our little outfit of upstarts. They must see us as a pesky annoyance that needs to be swept aside. But it isn't quite as easy as that!

They will have the majority of the crowd cheering them on - but if United start playing them off the park, which we are capable of, they'll have the majority of the crowd on their back - or silent!

United will have at least two fit strikers to choose from this week. My guess is Clarke and Sharp - with Donaldson on the bench. That should be enough for starters!

I think it will be a good game that ebbs and flows between the two teams with neither coming out on top in the end. 1-1.

I generally agree, which is why my needle of optimism is hovering somewhere between slightly favourable for a Blades result (narrow win or draw) to more negative (comfortable wednesday victory).
Let's be honest. After all the emotion has been and gone, teams with better players tend to win football matches. Not always, but mostly. I think they have, on balance, better players than we do. Not to say that we don't have some exceptional talent in our squad, and far more than they give us credit for, delusional oinkers that they are, but just that we currently can't match their level across the pitch in individual talent. This may well not be nearly enough for them, or.. it may be. We'll just have to see.

On the day we are easily capable of getting a result, it's just not going to be easy. But I have complete and absolute belief in our overall trajectory right now, and that gives me more hope than a single derby victory and spunk-loads of tuna cash ever could.

i reckon their players and fans are totally underestimating us.. yeah their players are saying 'ooh we know it is a local derby' and blah blah but they are going through the motions for the press. one of them says 'i've played at Burnley vs Blackburn' (Fletcher).. mate this is United vs Wednesday the modern equivalent of the battle of Kursk..we aced League one because the players that CW brought in were 'already' Championship standard. i think they are well on their way to proving that. For all of their 'big' players. i had only ever heard of Hooper.. Fletcher played for Burnley...fucking Burnley and then there is that Italian bloke.. Bannan? fringe Villa player..
they are all hot air.. like they have been all my life apart from a couple of seasons in the 90's

Dont know about the players super, but the majority of there fans are, one or two Wendy mates think it is going to be tough and would take a draw now, they know we are playing well and say the difference could be Wilder against carloss

I'm just hoping for a good , competitive, fairly contested game. I would like United fans to show that they are not the Neanderthal fans we are always portrayed as being and the Worlds football fans to see that the Premier League is not the be all and end all where English football is concerned.

If we did win the ignorant and uninformed piggies would have to drop the current insults such as 'pub league' players etc, and somehow come round to the idea that we might actually be serious competition. It would be such fun watching and listening to them squirm.
For some it will be like finding out that Santa isn't really.

They never have before, why would they start now? They'd just be quiet - or making excuses - for a few days and then straight back into full arrogance mode as if it never happened, whilst getting their stories of how they took the Lane over in the return fixture straight for January.

Dirty bastards.

If they lose they'll just go back to harping on about boxing day like they have since 1979!
