I don't want an appology. I have no doubt at all that those who run the club did what they thought was best for the club. I'm not saying that some of them didn't hope to gain personally as well. They might have done. I don't know. But I'm pretty sure Mr McCabe got involved in Hungary, China and building the hotel because he thought it could and would benefit the club.
Unfortunately, as it has turned out, none of those things has been a benefit. Rather than providing additional income streams (remember, that was the plan - to provide constant income streams when on field fortunes weren't so good!), they seem to have been an additional financial burden.
I find the accounts very difficult to understand and am never really sure what they say. But I suspect that money from the football club has been used to support these other activities, and also suspect that some of our player sales may well have been forced to take place because of this.
Ironic really. We get involved in these other areas in order to generate income to assist the football club, but in the end it is the football club that has to try and support these other activities.
However, back to the original point. I don't feel the McCabe, board, or anyone needs to appologise. They did what they thought was right at the time. It turned out not to be. That's life.
All I would say is that I want honesty. I don't want to be told we are going to make quality signings when we are not. I don't want to be told we're not going to rely on loans when in fact we are. I don't want to be told that we are going to establish ourselves as a top half premier league side if it's not matched by the financial support necessary to get us there, and I don't want to be told that we're aiming for Europe in 5 years if it's not backed by action. In short, I don't want my expectations raised by words that say one thing and then have my hopes dashed by actions that don't match the words. This is a football club, not a political party.
However, as for an appology. I don't want one. And I don't see the need for one. I would guess that McCabe has put into the club a lot more financially than he has taken out.
